OK, my wonderful mamas, you always come through for me, but I am desperate right now, no joke. I don't cut my hair on a regular basis, usually every 18-24 months... yes, that rare (well, by some standards). And the reason for that, for the most part, is I AM SCARED most of the time, because I never had a good haircut in my entire life (well, one time when we were stationed in Europe a long time ago). So, my hair ALWAYS gets screwed up. I have below-shoulder length now, but want to cut it really short because it takes forever in the shower and just general care is too high-maintenance with two small children.
Every time I go to any salon, hair stylist always promises, but NEVER delivers. I was even willing to pay big money at some point, but now I am just looking for something decent, but sort of on the cheaper side.
I live in Alexandria area, but am willing to drive around if found somebody really good. Previous post from yesterday on haircuts, said they recommended Karen Spooner from Springfield area. Her prices are surely reasonable, but does anybody else know her?? Also, I heard wonderful things about salon Sam Kavenchy, but they are expensive, at least for me. And if anybody knows somebody who they've been going to for years. I will take any recommendations though. Thank you so much for helping.

I go to Abby in Bubbles salon in Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax , she is really good and very reasonably priced at $45 , she can do modern hair styles also. I had longer hair and wanted a graduated bob (like Victoria Beckham) and she did it exactly how I wanted it.

I moved here last summer and got lucky. first place i tried was reasonable (I refuse to spend more than $40 for a haircut) and I found a great stylist. it's in Lorton which is not too far from you. http://goodhairdaysalon.com/ with Megan. She doesn't style her hair conservatively, but she will give you what you ask and make suggestions too. not pushy at all. i also got foils with her for $5/foil which is pretty good around here. it's great what only 8 foils can do to dishwater hair.
I had the same anxiety when I had to leave my hair stylist when I moved here. I was referred to Zoya at Salon Cielo in Tyson's II. Not only is she amazing (I actually ask her to tell me what style might look new and fresh and she delivers every single time) but my cut usually costs around $40. In addition, I can overextend my return visit (which happens way too often with me) and the cut grows out nicely, and I never have that awful look when you know you NEED to go get your haircut. She's a stylish middle aged caring woman - amidst a bunch of younger 'hip' stylists at the same shop. I highly recommend her!

A lot of my mommy friends have been there, and give rave reviews. It's in Arlington/Rosslyn and takes longer than a regular haircut but so worth it. In fact I even send my hubby there(he gets highlights etc LoL).
So get a sitter for a few hours and treat yourself.
It's the Graham Webb Academy and they have students that are about to graduate style your hair. Don't be scared because there are experienced instructors on hand to make sure your hair is perfect. So start looking at cuts you like in magazines and bring in a picture of something you'd like done to your hair.
Parking is free on the weekends but my hubby and I decided to metro there next time we get cuts and highlights. So call and book an appt today and throw in a manicure($12). Oh and haircuts go for $18(including blowdry). I noticed you said you don't have family in town etc. Hopefully ur hubby can watch kids while you get ur hair done. I know how hard it is to find a good hairdresser. I don't normally respond to posts but feel so strongly positive that you would have a great experience with my hairdresser that I just had to respond.
I've been going to Kate at the Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon in Tysons Corner for about 10 years. I completely trust Kate with my hair. Over the years she's given my highlights and then when there was too much gray popping through she's worked with me to find a great color balance between covering the grays and adding a few lighter strands throughout to create a natural looking shine. Not only is she awesome with color, she's terrific with a pair of scissors and a blow dryer.
When you book an appointment with Kate, tell the reservationist you are a new client and want to make sure there is extra time to discuss your interests and styling concerns. That way there will be plenty of time reserved for both of you to get to know one another.
A wash, haircut and style with Kate runs $65 and is worth every penny. I think this pricing is fairly comparable to other high-end salons in the DC areas, plus she's ACTUALLY worth it. You're not just paying for a high-end salon name.

Close to your area - For about 5 years, I went to Gina Natale Yarborough at the London Bob in Alexandria. I loved the cuts and color I got then -- when I had both longer and shorter hair. I'm not sure I'd consider the prices on the cheaper side, but I did like Gina's work and the salon...comfortable, casual. (I now go to someone in Reston, Eva Gregorchik, whom I've followed from Christie Adam in Reston to the Nail Studio and Day Spa. She's great too! We moved out a bit west of where we used to live and with 2 kids and working full-time, Alexandria wasn't convenient anymore.)

I've had the same issues as you, I have moved out of Alexandria about 6 years ago and I still go to her. She knows exactly what she's doing, very professional and friendly. Not expensive, very affordable. Hope it helps.
