My daughter had stranger anxiety at around 6 months and it lasted until she was over a year. I think the worst part of it was my inlaws kept saying something was socially wrong with her and she was that way because I didn't socialize her. My husbands grandma even told my family that they were worried about her because I didn't take her enough places. Basically they were insinuating that age was that way because she stayed at home with me. I kept trying to tell them it was normal. Anyway, slowly she grew out of the crying stage, then she was a little shy-im shy at first. Then over this summer (she turned 3 in may) she became extremely social. Eveyday she says she wants to play with her friends and she initiates long conversations with grownups in a store. I guess what I'm trying to say is relax and he will come around. Whatever you do, don't make him feel bad foe being scared. He will grow out of it and become social butterfly like mine :)
