Oh my gosh, i'm desperate. A can of hairspray that was in my kids' dance bag leaked onto my new gorgeous dining table (dark wood), and ate away a spot of varnish and left a sticky coating. I am hoping that someone has some idea about how to go about repairing this. I love this table, and it can't be replaced. Please help me! Products?? Experience?? Table repair people?? I really appreciate any help.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the great responses! I posted the same question on Yahoo Answers, and many responses were rude, if you can believe that! Anyway, I went to Home Depot and bought a bunch of touch up materials. I decided to try the easiest thing first, a touch-up stain marker from MineralWax. I applied it to the area, and wow, the color matched great. If you look right at the spot, you can see the outline of where the spray ate away at the table, but from all other angles, you can't tell. I am going to return everything else, and I highly recommend that little marker!! :)

I love the other answers you got! And calling the hairspray company? Duh!! I never would have thought of that! :)

If you want to do it yourself, this is what you do:

1. Sand it. Sand it. Sand it. The whole table (or table top if you can be careful).

2. Stain it.

3. Put varnish on it.

This is a process, and one that I have been putting off on our new table. We got it, then the same day, scratches started to appear. I want to sand it down, stain it, and put a thicker varnish on it. It will prevent the scratches.

Anyway, it IS quite an undertaking, so be prepared!

We had some furniture that needed touch ups after being moved, used often and a cocker spaniel that chewed the corner off an Ethan Allen table....

We had purchased a few pieces of this furniture from Weirs in Dallas/Plano. I called them because they have repair guys that do excellent work on pieces that need some touch up.

These guys work on their day OFF and not when they are on the job with Weir's. The day off used to be Monday. They are called Jorge Furniture Repair ###-###-####.

They did touch ups and repairs for us (CASH) and did a great job. You cannot tell the dog chewed the corner off the table. We spent about $200 to have them touching up things around the house, etc.

Now....my dining and breakfast table both came from Amish Furniture company and when you buy furniture from them, NO MATTER what happens, they will make repairs for you. For instance...if we were to move and the stain not match in a new home, they will ship our tables back to the Amish people in Ohio who hand made it to re-stain for a nominal fee. Can't go wrong with Amish Furniture Showcase. Yes, you pay through the nose but it is SO worth it.

Good luck.

If it is a really special and irreplacable table then you will need to get it professionally refinished. It is quite costly if you find someone who is good, but definitely the way to go.

I spilt rubbing alcohol on my nightstand and it ate away the finish...or i though so. Some one told me to take mayonaise and ciggerette ashes and mix them together and rub it on there and let it sit for a while. I did and it really worked and not there is only a faint spot where it used to be and every week when I dust I notice it goes away even more. Good Luck!

Try calling the phone number on the hairspray bottle and see if they have recommendations or call a furniture store. Sorry, I'm not much help, just a thought.

Try blobbing a bunch of real mayo on it, I know it works well with water circles left from cups. It is suppose to put the moisture back in the wood and may evan take the sticky stuff off of it. Hope you find some way to fix your irreplacable dinning room table. Good luch to you!!

Oh and try and leave it on for a few hours and if that does not work, put some more on there and leave it on over night or during the day.
