My 5 year old daughter has been having recurring Chalazion cyst on her eyelid since late August. She had her first Chalazion cyst extraction via surgery in October and now is needing another one. Has anyone had experience with this?? I am trying to find out preventative treatments to hopefully keep this from happening again.

What can I do next?

Here is what I got off of a website about it....

Proper cleansing of the eyelid may prevent recurrences in people prone to chalazia. Cleaning the eyelash area with baby shampoo will help reduce clogging of the ducts.

Its worth a try. If she keeps getting them and they get bigger and bigger then I would make sure that it is looked into further to make sure it is nothing more than a blocked duct.

I wish you the best!

Hi T.,

Some of these are caused by poor hygiene but that is usually in women that wear a lot of eye makeup. Obviously not your problem! :) Most of these things are usually in adults as well but are becoming more and more prevalent in little ones. The abundance of oozing from the gland at the eyelid is what causes the clog and that is not normal. The primary reason for them is systemic. Something is going on in her body and it's reacting at the eye. This means the immune system is not working properly. Building the immune system is of extreme importance because so many things can develop because the body can't fight them off. Knowing this is a GOOD thing! It gives you a heads up so you can do something about it now.

Grape skin is a primary antioxidant that works to build the immune system AND specifically prevent these. A good absorbable multivitamin (not Flintstones or Walmart) will help tremendously with the immune system as well. If you have an abundance of chemicals in the home (household, bath and body, etc) you may want to detox the house as well.

You probably know this but warm compresses each day can help keep these glands from clogging (thus causing the cyst) until her immune system gets to the point of handling it on it's on.

Let me know if you need clarification on anything or want more information. I'll be glad to help!

M.

I've had two removed, although the surgeries were years apart. Warm compresses(as warm as she can tolerate) with gentle to mild pressure. Your daughter is old enough to do this herself and can judge how hard to press and the temperature. A wash cloth worked best for me because I could turn it several times before putting it under the water again. Get some "special" wash cloths that are only used for her eye and only touched by her.

Does she have a toy, doll, stuffed animal, etc., that could be close to her face/eyes during the night when she sleeps?
Good luck.

My 11 yr. old son had reocurring chalazions from the age of 1 1/2 to 3. 6 doctors later, treatments, antibiotic ointments, hot compresses, cleaning with baby shampoo, etc., etc., an optomotryst cured him. He prescribed a steroid ointment that gradually slaughed off the top layers to open up the clogged pores/follicles. That is why my son's chalazion did not seem to disappear and kept growing, the pores/follicles were blocked on his lower eyelid. The chalazion caused his eye to have scars and I wished I had found this doctor sooner. It went away within weeks, no surgery was ever needed.

Hope this helps! I wish I could remember the name of the steroid ointment, but it was many years ago. Maybe your doctor knows?
