Right after my 12 month old got tubes he screams like someone is hurting him when he is put in the bathtub. He has never fallen in or gone under the water. I don't understand what is going on. I have tried to get in with him and he clings to me for dear life. Could the tubes be to blame? Up until he got the tubes he played in the bathtub. Please help.

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all the tips. Tonight I put him in his infant bath foam we used when he was first born and washed his hair that way. At first he cried but when he understood that I wasn't getting his ears or face wet he was ok. I also let him use his toothbrush to brush his teeth while I was bathing him and was a happy baby. I think it will take a few weeks but hopefully after that he will be back to himself. Thanks for all your help.

I am a RN in a ENT clinic at AR Children's Hospital. Sometimes they don't like the feeling of the water in their ears after tubes are placed, but they usually get used to it.(YES, it's okay to get water in the tubes!) You don't have to use ear plugs, but can if you prefer. One of our drs. recommends you put a drop or two of Ciprodex or Floxin after a lot of water gets in their ears just as a preventative measure and to keep the tubes open and clear. It may just take some time getting used to the feeling. On another note and as a mother of 3, kids sometimes go through a stage when they're scared of the water getting into their eyes, nose, or ears, and he may just so happened be going through that. I would probably try plugs until he's comfortable in the tub again and thinks of it as fun again, then try without after a couple weeks and see how he does. good luck!

My daughter started freaking out when I rinsed her hair out or poured water over her head. She's 3 and is old enough to tell me that her ears hurt when water gets in them. Since she also has tubes, I called the ENT. They told us that some children experience ear pain when water enters the ear canal. Even a drop will startle them. They said the child will be fine at bath time and then all of a sudden notice this painful sensation when the water drips into the ear and through the tube. My daughter actually puts her hands over her ears and has been known to ask for a drink of water after water does get into her ears. Weird for sure, but I confirmed this is normal via the ENT. He may be scared to enter the tub knowing that it may lead to water dripping in his ears and hurting. Solutions would be to lay him back and rinse his head, plugging his ears, or covering them with a cloth headband or other head band. Sometimes my daughter holds a washcloth over her face and ears (she's older though). Good luck!

Our son had his 1st set of tubes at 4 mos. old and his last set of tubes (a total of 4 sets) when he was about 6 yrs. old. This was never anything that he did or anyone that I know whose children had tubes. I don't think it's the tubes at all. See if he will sit in the tub with no water. Also let him see you sitting in the tub with water and enjoying it. Ask him if he wants to sit and play with mommy in the water. I sure hope this goes away soon. Seeing them scared is hard.

Ate you using plugs in his ears when he's in the water? Are they making a good seal?

Although I am not sure what "very fallen or gone under the water" means, if he just got the tubes the sound of the water could be what is making him freak out. Also, the tubes can not get wet at all. This would be allowing water to get into his ears and that could be causing pain. When my son first got his first set of tubes I had to bathe him in the sink for a bit. He had problems with his ears since he was about 6 months old (got the tubes when he was 11 1/2 months old). The dr. told us that he would be very sensitive to sounds and things for a while because he did not know what things sounded like because all he had heard for months was muffled things because of all the fluid in his ears. Now he could hear clearly and it did freak him out a bit. After a couple of weeks he was ok. I hope this helps!
