So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the advice.. I called his dr and he said that Nikkolas didnt need the ear drops because his ears werent that bad.. so know im wondering why we even got the tubes put in, in the first place.. So i havent been using the ear plugs for bathes because he doesnt keep them in.. (i just use a cup to pour the water on his head)He pulls them out and i have tried the head band too and he wont keep it on.. Im not going to listen to him cry because he doesnt like it.. as for going swimming this summer.. Im not going to be throwing him into the pool.. so i think he will be okay with No plugs in.. Again thanks

My daughter has had tubes three times, the last time this past Friday and every time, two seperate doctors have told me not to worry about ear plugs in the tub. As long as he isn't laying under the water for long periods of time he should be fine. I was also told this for swimming in a pool as well. (Lakes, rivers and oceans are off limits though) I actually had one of my daughters tubes pop out of her ear from the suction caused by one of her plugs when it came out. (Her right ear drum is weak) So as far as I have been told he shouldn't have touse them for a bath. The tube drains any water that gets in there if it does anyway. Hope that helps.

You have a long way to go... I think they have to stay in until the tubes fall out but i don't use them with my daughter, we just use a cup to rinse her hair. When she's swimming we have to use them but we don't have any problems just for batheing.

After a child has had tubes put in their ears it takes normally about a year for them to fall out and you normally have to put the plungs in the ears till they decentergrate normally 8-12 months after they are in.

My daughter absolutely hated the ear plugs - so finally i went and bought a shower (type) thing to hook on to the faucet, so that way she could put her head back with out the ear plugs in.

I know that when my son had the tubes if he got any water in his ears at all he would experience excruciating pain. so I would suggest until they fall out or being very cautious when bathing him. Swimming pools were also a rough spot for us.

Good luck

I have been told with both my girls you have to keep putting plugs in their ears until the tubes fall out.

hey i have a four year old son he got tub in his ears when he was two, and i tryed the plug thing he hated them.. so i just take cup and pure the water over his head when washing it. and it been ok. i still dont let his head go under water. so i would not worry about the plugs. he has lost one his tub now , and one is just hanging in there the dr said last week ,my sister has a little boy who is 11 now, and she did the same thing with him...good luck...

J.,
Sorry to say, but get used to it. You must continue to use ear plugs until the tubes come out. This could take years....
Keep shopping until you find a brand or design that he likes and is comfortable for him.
It will become a habit and will not continue to feel like such a hassell forever....

My daughter had tubes put in her ears on Jan 25th. She is 14 months old now. Her doctor said we don't need to worry about ear plugs or getting water in her ears. I was kind of leary of that, because everything I had heard from anyone else, said to use the tubes and Do Not get water in the ears. But we have not made an issue of it and pour water on her just like before. I'm not telling you it is okay, because I would still follow what your doctor said, but I just thought I would let you know what our doctor told us???

We still do them - OUr doctor said to do them for ever - we dont do plugs anymore but we do cotton saturated with some kind of Vaseline - pasically take a small piece of cotton and roll it in it
We distract ROhan like turn the tap on or give him his favorite toy while putting it in and now it really helps - we also only wash his hair twice a week and that also makes it easier to cope with it

My doctor told us the same thing as Jenni R. We have never used plugs when we bath her. We, of course, don't dunk her. We pour water over her head with a pitcher. Like Jenni said, the doctor has the best advice for you, but we have never had a problem. Before her tubes, we had 4 ear infections IN A ROW for a total if 10 that year. That was a year ago. Now we have only had one, so I don't think the water has affected her at all. If we do take her swimming this summer, however, we will use plugs (if they haven't fallen out).

Ear plugs need to be worn near water for a full year following surgery. Getting water in the ears following surgery will cause the tubes to fall out faster, your child to get ear infections, or ear pain. After going through the trouble of surgery, none of the results of failing to wear the ear plugs would be desirable or make the surgery worthwhile in the first place. The ear plugs are not that much trouble, especially once the child gets used to them.
