My niece is 4 mos old and at her 4 mos check up the Dr referred my SIL and the baby to a specialist to have her head checked out b/c he is concered she may need a helmet.

Anyone have experience with what to expect from the specialist? If she was referred to a specialist what is the likelyhood that she will get a helmet? (I personally think her head is pretty flat, but I am obviously no expert)

What can I do next?

My son should have been in a helmet; I wish the pediatrician had pushed it more. He's 22 months old and his head has rounded out as much as it will... he'll never want to shave his head like daddy ;) It's not like you'd notice it unless you were looking for it, but the flat spot is so very definitely there.

Just wanted to share that, and encourage the helmet if it's recommended!!

ETA: If she's dead set against it, I highly advise her to weigh the pros and cons. Want me to send her a picture of my son's dome piece!? It won't correct itself, and her poor daughter will have to live with that forever. She'll regret not doing it; I do!!

My daughter had an extremely misshapen head. I was (and am) against the helmet too. Have her find a good chiropractor and physical therapist. My daughters head is normal now. I could see results in about two weeks of adjustments that was going in once a week. My ped at the time wanted me to get a helmet also and she would have had to wear it 23 hours a day. Do you know how thick they are? It would have had her tiny back and neck out of whack too. I don't blame your SIL.

They recommended my son wear a helmet.
He would have had to wear it for 23 1/2 hours a day for months.
I googled it and found pics of kids w/the helmets so I could make a better
informed decision and thank heavens I didn't do it.
His head evened out after awhile. You can barely feel where it used to
be and he's 2 1/2. It was there for awhile & when he slept you could tell
what was comfy: the flat spot. I'd try & move him a bit to get him more comfy.
Started holding him more, tried tummy time (he did not like that),
when he got older he's sit in his swing, his jumperoo, his little sitting play yard.
I would suggest anyone considering it to try a helmet one day all day first to see how it feels, impedes daily life etc.
My son's spot was uber flat and like I said......not anymore. Woo hoo.
I don't recommend it. Esp my ped said it was for purely esthetic reasons.

Even if she doesn't do the helmet it is worth seeing the specialist.

My last child was a helmet kid. It's seriously NOT a big deal. I thought for sure my child would hate it and it would be a struggle to keep it on her but nope, I was wrong. From the moment they slipped it on her head at the office, she never thought twice about it. Even when we'd remove it to bathe her, I thought she'd fight me putting it back on, but again, nope.

I for one am so glad I did the helmet though. When the office did all the digital scanning of her head and had the mold made, that is when I could truly see how bad her head reall was. Her ears were so misaligned that you couldn't even put sunglasses on her. Also, I was able to get a good look at the top of her head to see how skee-wompis it truly was.

My baby was older, at almost 8 months so she had to wear it a lot longer than babies that are much younger. Tell your SIL she's making a mountain out of a mole hill because it's a simple thing that makes HUGE impacts:)
