Healthy 1St Birthday Cake - Sevierville,TN

My child's first birthday is coming up soon. I've gotten a few ideas offline, but does anyone have any more ideas on a healthier version of a birthday cake. What I'm most concerned about is the sugar, I would like for the sugar to be natural from fruits. So I'm playing wiht the idea of cakes without sugar, also the icing needs to be sugarfree as well. Or I have see the fruit arrangement cakes I like those a lot. I would like to be able to give my son the messy factor that you get with the icing and cake, just without the all the sugar. So maybe if I could get a spongey base, a type of icing/yogurt, with the fruit arrangement that would be nice. I've found out about the Apple Sauce cake, sugar free cream cheese icing, theres also some mango fruit dip that i could use as the "icing" for a cake made out of fruit, then like a layer of sometype of sugarfree cake. I would love it if it could have vegetables in the cake/ arrangement, but all I've seen is carrot cakes, and I'm not into the carrot cake or the spices that come with it. So any ideas would be great, I'm also not an experienced cook so if the recipie is very involved I might not be able to make it right. It can have some sugar but I'm just trying to keep it less sugar as possible. Thank you for any help.

What can I do next?

I did carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for the 1st birthday cakes. I also allowed my kids to have sugar in moderation. Banana cake would also be a good option. Anglefood cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream is a healthy low fat option. You can control how much sugar you add to the cake and the whipped cream. I don't think my kids ate more than two bites of their cake anyway.

I have to admit I did a completely normal sugary cake for both my kids! However.... I think there was a recipe in the book "what to expect the first year" for a healthy cake.

I think that the person who suggested Cool Whip for the frosting had a great idea. Still very messy, but less sugar I believe. Actually kind of wish I had thought of that! It is easy to dye different colors, too, to make it fun. I have used it to frost cupcakes when I taught younger grades.

Have fun!!!

Simplify your life. Make him a small cake. Yes with sugar. He will play in what. Nothing terrible will happen because he licks his fingers. You want good pictures, give him a regular cake. If you make him a weird kind of cake, your pictures may not be as cute especially if has a tart flavor like the mango. Heck, throw caution to the wind and let him have a bit of sugar.

my kids played with the frosting and cake but really didnt eat it. they got it on their hands and were kind of amazed with the frosting..

I would buy one cake for the party and give the baby a small piece..

it is his first birthday let him have some fun. a bit of sugar will not hurt the child one bit.

It's one day a year, let the kid have real cake. As for first birthdays, I really don't understand the need for a party. The baby has no idea what a birthday is. And I have never understood the separate cake for the baby to smear everywhere. I've seen babies that, when the cake was put in front of them, had no interest in it, and the parents actually took the baby's hands and stuck them in the cake, and rubbed it ion the baby's face for pictures. Waste of food, if you ask me, and the next time the baby wants to play with his food, the parents get upset.

ok so just out of curiosity is the baby going to have the whole cake? you will have others eating the cake yes? I would make her a muffin and frost it with a sweetened cream cheese and be done with it and make a real cake for the people celebrating with you lol

Foods that are sugar free are often full of chemicals. Yes, even sugar free Cool Whip. They need to use something to make it taste semi-decent in the absence of sugar, so the chemicals used to strip the sugar out end up being worse for you than just leaving the sugar in. I am going to second and third the sentiments you have received already; chances are your child will play with the cake, lick his or her fingers and stare at his or her hands all messy, and be done with it. You might get some rubbing of the cake on his or her face, good for laughs and pictures, but a 1-year old does not sit and eat a piece of cake like even a 2-year old does. At this stage of your child's life, you have full control over what s/he eats. The amount s/he will end up eating is very small if you were to take the actual cake and measure out what ends up being consumed. Let them eat cake... real cake; they are only going to turn 1 once and you might as well dive into the fun of the tradition and throw caution to the wind.

You are making this complicated. It's cake. It doesn't have to be big. Just enough for baby to make a mess and take pictures.

I would do a sugar free pudding cake, with whipped cream frosting.
Or maybe the Applesauce Cake, with a homemade whipped cream frosting.
Serve a veggie and fruit tray on the side.

This is his "smash cake" right? Not the one for a guest? Perhaps try whole foods type of banana bread recipe with smashed bananas spread just to allow some of your decorations to stick.

I totally understand you wanting to give your child a healthy alternative. However, odds are in your favor that even if you give him a traditional cake, he won't eat it :-) I've been to several first birthday parties and have only witnessed one child even taste the cake. Most looked at their cakes and played with it but refused to taste it.

I will always remember my son's look of absolute disgust right before he smashed his hands through his cake and tossed it on the floor :-)

Have fun.

Oh you are going to get so many "you're only a kid once" or something similar comments for this one =)

I think it's great to try to do a sugar free cake - however if you are using fruit to sweeten then you might as well use real sugar (maybe organic cane or something) because well, sugar whether broken down from a fruit is chemically the same as sugar. The only benefit to using fruit is the extra vitamins/minerals/fiber you might be giving them. Here is a good article about sugar: http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/diet-tips/sugar-wise-...

Sorry I don't have a recipe for you but in this instance I would just get them their favorite desert with all natural ingredients. Last year my daughter got a peach/apple/blueberry/raspberry combo cobbler with homemade ice cream for her birthday "cake" because that's what she wanted =)

Seriously? It's his birthday, it's one day out of the year. If you want it to be healthy, shred some zucchini or squash into the cake batter and make your own frosting glaze using powdered sugar, milk, lemon juice, and maybe fresh juiced blueberries...or vanilla instead of the lemon and blueberries. Sugar in moderation is not the enemy if you have good dental hygiene. Substitutes full of chemicals and preservatives scare me way more than sugar. Cook using real food, not additives, and your food will be healthy.

My mother offered to make the cake, but when I told her I wanted a healthy one, she said "Ugh. Yuck. Those don't taste good." And then she made two cakes, both with sugar.

Good luck with your decision.

I love this site so checked, and yes, they have healthy first birthday cake recipes, several in fact:

My other suggestion for sugar control for everyone would be cupcakes, as your child will be mainly playing with the cake anyway ;)

I like the carrot cake idea. I think I did a banana cake, which was really just banana bread (low sugar) and cream cheese 'frosting' with not much sugar. You could even do yogurt for the frosting. I only made this little one for DD, and made a regular cake for guests.

Have fun!

I did a sugar free carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for my kids 1st. I just wanted to add that I totally support the idea. I caught so much greif from people, like I was torturing my kids or something!!! Just ruining there life because they had a healhy 1st Bday cake!
Maybe like an angel food or shortcake. I've made homemade shortcakes before and its basically like a biscuit receipe that you add a bit of sugar to, so you could even adjust that. Heck, you could even use whole wheat flour with that if you wanted. Cool Whip doesn't have much sugar in it (I think??) So you could do a twist on strawberry shortbake with cool whip???
