Hi! My in-laws and my family want to take a nice vacation this year. We're thinking Maui- something not too commercial, just sand, nice beaches, hiking trails, fun stuff for the kids (ages 6, 2 and 1). We'd like to rent a house or a condo to sleep 8, even if these are separate units. We really would need a kitchen, which is why a traditional hotel won't do.
If you have any ideas, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!
Wow! THANKS so much for the great ideas! I'm going to check them all out. Take Care!

We have a timeshare on Maui that we might not be using this year. It is at the Maui Westin Kaanapali. You can go on line and look at the resort. We have adjoining rooms. The largest room has a separate bedroom, livingroom, kitchen, washer/dryer. The adjoining room has a kitchenette, king size bed, bathroom. The hotel is a five-star hotel. Just beautiful!!!!
If that is something you are interested in, send me a note.
Thanks.

Hi F.,
I have been to Maui four times (all four times in time shares) and I LOVE it. Maui has everything you could need for entertainment and relaxation.
The one critical thing to look for in a time share (if you plan on vacationing in late spring/summer) is air conditioning. It gets very humid in Maui and air conditioning can really make the difference for a comfortable night's sleep.
Also, a great book to purchase is called "Maui Revealed". It reviews restaurants, activities, beaches, etc. Also, if you find that the time share you purchased (from the various suggested time shares) won't accommodate the dates that you want to be there, you can purchase extra days from a site that's listed in the book. We did that and it saved us $300. Time shares are definitely the way to travel.
Also, some suggested destinations while on Maui depending on budget and time: The Old Lahaina Luau, The Road to Hana (leave early and take your time on this one so you can really enjoy it), Warren and Anabelle's (magic and comedy show-the family version), The Aloha Bicycle Tour (ride a bike down a windy volcano road-very fun), The Maui Ocean Center (an aquarium), Snorkeling at Molikini (on the Four Winds II) and Haleakala (the Volcano). For beaches I'd recommend: Black Rock at Kaanapali (easy snorkeling and plenty of amenities) and Napili (great turtle refuge on the south side of the beach near the lava strand). As you can see I really LOVE Maui. If you need more info, don't hesitate to mail me back through Mamasource. But please get that book that I mentioned. It was truly a lifesaver!

Aloha!
The Maui Kaanapali Villas are wonderful. I have stayed there, and my sister stays there 3-4 times a year. They are on one of the best beaches in Maui, near Black Rock, and not far from Lahaina.
Some fun things to do in Maui are going to the Ioa Needle, Haleakala Vocano, Maui Aquarium, Sugar Cane Train(Lahaina and Kaanapali Railroad), and snorkeling Molokini Crater. Lahaina is a great place to shop, and it has many good places to eat. You can also see the Banyon Tree in Lahaina.
Great places to eat include Leilani's(the equivalant to Duke's Canoe Club in Malibu), Cheeseburgers in Paradise, and Maui Tacos for fast food. There is also a great little ice cream shop in Lahaina, though I don't remember the name of it.
Good luck, and have fun!
PS- I forgot to mention that if you buy the Entertainment Guide for Maui, Hawaii(available at the library) for $20, you can save a huge amount on the condo...you can get it for $135 per night! Plus, there are lots of other discounts throughout the islands in this book.

Hi F.,
We own a timeshare condo in Maui and sometimes we rent it out if we are not going to use it for the year. Unfortunately, we are using it this year, but the place where we rent it out is called redweek.com. You can get some great deals on there. Our resort is called Kaananpali Beach Club and it is beautiful! We just love it there. Check it out, you will be very happy with the accomodations and prices you will find on there.

We have a beautiful condo at the Kaanapali Alii. It's right in the middle of the Kaanapali resort area, in between the Westin and the Marriott. You can go to the Kaanapali Alii web site and rent through it. These condos are older, but most have been refurbished lately with top of the line materials, and because they are older they have larger rooms and big kitchens (fully stocked with cookware, dishes and utensils). Not only can you walk out of your condo right onto one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but you can walk along the beach walk (ocean front sidewalk) from one end of the Kaanapali resort to the other, starting at Black Rock at the Sheraton, all the way down to the Hyatt. This means you can walk to dinner at the different hotels, and walk to Whaler's Village, a great shopping center. This area is only a couple of miles from Lahaina town. Having 4 children myself, I think having your own kitchen is essential. You will be in the land of the $10 hotdog, and we've found being able to have breakfast and lunch in the condo was a great time and moneysaver. When everyone is playing on the beach, no one wants to go get dressed and go to a fancy lunch! It's so much easier for me to go up to the condo and pack a few sandwiches to bring down to the beach, or have the kids run up to the condo for a couple of minutes to eat. Maui....No Ka Oi!! We leave next Wed. and I can't wait!!

it's been some years since I've been to Maui but two places I have stayed are:
Napili Kai Beach Resort and Napili Shores. Both were nice condos but I'd go with Napili Kai for a 1st choice-more family friendly and just nicer overall. My parents always stay there when on Maui. Each had rooms with full kitchens, pool, beach. Napili is on the farther end of the island, about 1/2 hour from Lahaina. We prefer that part of the island. check expedia or trip advisor to see reviews of each property.
have fun!

We stayed in upcountry Maui last year and it was fantastic! www.halehoomana.com The beach is a short drive away, but the property is two acres so the kids had a lot of fun climbing trees, hunting for geckos and generally exploring. They also have a spa on-site that has amazing hawaiian lomi lomi massage. We also took a kayaking tour with the owner and got to see the whales up close and personal. Overall, an amazing trip and I'd highly recommend this property. Have fun!

Try to lookinto a timeshare. We're owners of the wyndham timeshare and they have those everywhere. They have 3 bedroom condos with kitchens and a family atmosphere with still having all the perks of a hotel. Look into it. You might be able to get a great room on ebay from owners trying to sell their points for the year. I would highly recommend it. We use our points every year. It's probably the only awesome vacation we'll get for a while since my daughter is only 2 and we're a one income family.

try www.vrbo.com You will be able to view photos of the properties. We have used this site and vacationed in baja Calif and Hawaii this is a reputable business. The accomadations are beautiful and are fully furnished, clean and stocked with basic necessities. We stayed in Cabo and we had internet, long distance free phone service to US and Canada, stocked refrigerators (yes 2), a stocked pantry, 2 laundry rooms with all the laundry products, a maid, a pool guy, and landscape service. This home accomodated 16 of us. Hawaii was very nice too.

I live on Maui and there are lots of great vacation rentals, if you google them, you will see. Most of the cheaper condos are in Kihei, which is OK, but the more beautiful beaches and scenery is on the west side (Kaanapali, Kapalua, Lahaina) and the North Shore (Paia, Kuau, Haiku) The north shore can tend to be more surfer-dude-ish and eclectic, but that is part of its charm (lots of aging hippies there - you may run into Willie Nelson!) The South side (Wailea, Makena) is where the resorts are, and they are also in the West side. You should check out the VRBO website (Vacation Rentals by Owner) and see what is available in your desired price range and time-frame. Like I said, the Kihei condos are cheaper, but that is what Kihei is, just row after row of cheap condos on a mediocre beach. But if you have never been here, it is an OK place to start. If you find something in your price range, I can tell you about the area where it is. We have Costco here, as well as Walmart and KMart. Most folks make a stop at these retailers before heading to their condos so they are stocked up. The regular grocery stores are kind of a rip-off. I hope that you have a wonderful vacation and please let me know if I can be of assistance to you! (and thanks for choosing Maui!)

Hi - I don't know the names of the places but there are a lot of vacation condo rental places on Napili Beach - Napili Bay area. It is a beautiful sandy beach great for kids. Napili itself is quite far from "town" though and many other things you may want to (up on the NW coast)do so you'll have to decide on that. But if you're mainly going to enjoy the beach/pool/sunshine then Napili is great for that. I agree with you on finding the not too commercial places! Good luck!

This gated community was developed with six 2 & 3 story buildings each offering sweeping views of the Pacific. The pristine and picturesque beach and rocky shoreline fronting the property is exceptional for sunsets, swimming, sunning and spectacular seasonal whale watching. Makena Surf offers central air conditioning, two large pool areas with Jacuzzis, private gas barbeque areas, four tennis courts and free on site parking. The interiors include large fully equipped kitchens, wet bar, washers & dryers, cable television, free local phone service, private lanais and luxury linens supplied directly by Ali’i Resorts. Hi! (Or should I say Aloha)
We used to go to Maui together as a family when I was a kid. Every summer we'd stay at my Grandparents condo on Kaanapali Beach in Maui. It is called PapaKea. It is really really low key. There is not too much that we planned or organized trips that we would do. Mostly just walk on the beach or take the Wiki Wiki shuttle into town. There is one of those big, major huge fancy hotels right next store so sometimes we'd "sneak" into their fancy pool. :) The units have kitchens and some are bigger with more rooms. Oh yeah...and there is a putting green on the grounds so it was fun for us kids to use my Grandpa's putter and play.

Maui is filled with condo and house rentals. Last time we stayed at the Kannapali Alli and had a beautiful oceanview condo with kitchen, family room, laundry room, etc. That stretch of beach is nothing but condos. You can easily find them through the Internet. One note...you said you didn't want anything "too commercial." What do you mean by that? If it means that you don't want to be on a "hotel row" than you need to be careful about Maui. There are many destinations on the island, as well as other islands that would be more remote and less "commercial." That being said there is something to be said for being close to grocery stores and walking distance to restaurants and shops, particularly with a large group and little ones. I'd suggest outlining what you want from the trip and doing a little research online or in books (Hidden Hawaii or Lonely Planet books are great for more off-the-beaten-track experiences), then work with a Hawaii specialist. You may even want to consider another island like the north shore of Oahu, Kauai, or the big island. Hawaii is very diverse and it's very easy to find something to suit your tastes and needs. Aloha and bon voyage!
