Hi, I don't know much about accupuncture, but lately I've been hearing a lot about this and it all seems to be positive. I know it's a form of medicine that the Chinese have been practicing for centuries and a lot of people are getting good results. Does anyone know what the procedure is and how it works? And has anyone personally had this done or knows anyone who has? I'm curious because I thought it might help me with losing weight.

What can I do next?

Thanks everyone for your imput on this. I'm going to keep doing my own research until I know for sure if I'm going to actually have this done.

Hi Z.:

I have not personally tried this but my best friend and her family go once per month for allergies. She loves it and it has helped her from having her allergies act up. Both her husband and 10 year old also have it done as well. She swears by it. My best friend is also terrified of needles but makes it through this OK! Can't be that bad then !!!

I am unsure about it as a wieght loss method, but just to give you an idea of the procedure... to diagnose what needed to be done he started by asking a few questions and looking at my tongue. Then he would start the treatment, my acupuncturist always started with something relaxing, like he would massage the pressure points on my face. He would then ask me to move on my stomach or back depending on where he was placing the pins. They were in a thin straw-like tube which he just placed against the point and tapped the end and the pin would go in. Felt less than a mosquito bite of pain. I've had them in my hands, face, ears, feet, stomach and wrists. Sometimes to ensure he was in the right spot he would twist the pin a little which is slightly uncomfortable, but again so minor. Then you lay there for half an hour (a vacation in itself for me) and after he would give me a mini-massage. I found the whole experience relaxing, and positive for accute pains but also for general health.

The digetive tract gets effected. Remember that going to the bathroom after eatting is a good thng but only once a day is not. yes yes yes, acupuncture can work wonders for many ailments. definitely try it. it involves the practicioner placing needles in different key parts of the body to send your bodys natural healing energy there (chi). might sound new-agey but it is amazing and does not hurt even though it sounds like it might. the needles are extremely thin and you dont feel them going in. there are a few schools here in the bay area where you can get treated inexpensively by senior students. check it out! good luck!

Accupuncture is great! I love going! I recommend it to everyone for every reason. lol. I have tried it for weight loss and it did work. My accupuncturist also gave me an eating and excercise plan to go along with the needling, so that all together did wonders. Accupuncture sounds scarier than it really is. If you're in the east bay and want a recommendation, I know a really good one. :)
Good luck!

I have had accupuncture and I do think it helped some. I have to say though I don't think it was long term help or that it solved my problem. It gave temporary relief from back pain which was aggrivated by a car accident but ultimately was caused by the fact that my breasts were large and too heavy. In the end I had a reduction but while I waited the accupuncture did provide some relief.

Hi, I had accupuncture to quit smoking a long time ago. I quit but I also think that it had to do with the desire to quit. I don't know about weightloss.

Good Luck

Z.,

I have tried acupunture, but for more medical related issues. I does not hurt but I in turn,I did not get much relief. But Again I used it for a pain management prospective. There are several different pressure points that they place these very thin yet long needles some areas maybe more receptive thatn others. I believe the area that they focus on for weight is near the ear but that is just a guess. I can ask around at my office to see if any one there has heard of this. They also have these elctrode attachments that they can attach to send tiny electic stimulations to the nerves but again that is for pain Management. ( I work in a Physical Therapy Office in Michigan soon relocating to Nevada) Many of the patients that I deal with on a daily basis fully beleive in it and swear by it. I have not heard of anyone using for weight loss but I would definitely try it can't hurt you either way. Good luck with it but the best way to loose weight is by changing your diet and exercise even if it is just walking. I am on a weight loss program from the doctor and I have lost 18 Lbs since Jan 10th.

Hi Z.,
I do go to accupuncture every other week. I have anxiety and I did not want to be on medication. A good friend of mine was always telling me about accupuncture and I decided to give it a try. It has worked wonders for me.... My husband goes too. he has diabetes and it helps him with it. I would recommend it to anyone. The difficult part is finding a good accupuncturist. I went to 2 or 3 until I found the right person for me. If you are willing to drive to Oakland, call Sam Tomarchio ###-###-####. He is great. If you just want to call and ask questions, he is very knowledgable.
Good luck to you...

I tried accupuncture a few years ago to treat depression. It was so easy. I had to go a few times a week at first then once a month. I looked forward to my sessions because I knew I would get some peace and quiet for 30 minutes. There was no pain involved. Don't know about the weight loss though. Sorry!

Hi Z., I used accupuncture to help with insomnia and stomach problems. It definitely helped in both areas. I actually credit the accupuncture with keeping me from being admitted to the hospital for my stomach issues for the 2 months I was going to appointments. Two weeks after I stopped, I was in the ER. I don't know about weightloss though and would love it if you could let us know how it works for you!

Z.,

I had my first experience with accupuncture for a sore shoulder recently. I went to a very influencial practitioner through our local medical center. He was a Chinese man who said very little but went straight to work inserting the pins into my shoulder with very little irritation or pain. Then he hooked two electrodes to two of the pins and turned on a high frequency electrode machine. He looked at me and said "You meditate". Which I did for 20 minutes while he left me alone looking like a porcupine.
I had 5 treatments and it did seem to give me some relief but I found the experience strange and the inability that I felt to confer with the doctor left me feeling confused about what to expect. I am sure it was my own communication block that I could have overcome but instead, I quit going to him and went to a chiropractor, who, most of all, was easy to talk to and made me feel more at ease.
As for weight loss, I think that a sensible diet of small portioned, healthy food, regular excercise that you enjoy, and maybe even some self-reflecting meditation, may be all you need.
Good luck!

I have gotten acupuncture once and my mom and step-father used to get it done regularly to reduce stress and improve their emotional well being. They loved it. I did not have a bad experience with it but I am not sure I was really benefiting from it. The needles that are used are extremely thin, like thread, and there are little rings on the end that the acupuncturist will turn. The rings are supposed to release energy from the area where the needle is. Sometimes the feeling from the rings being turned can be an odd sensation, but not painful. The needles themselves are painless as well. For those who are able to commit to regular visits, I believe acupuncture can be beneficial.

I don't know if it would work for losing weight, but it has helped me with a number of "issues", including pain management for a back injury and depression, oh and pms symptoms. :}

The needles that are used are so thin you don't even know they're there...unless you move too much. :)

I say go for it. and this is coming from a person who HATES/FEARS needles!
