Are you nursing? Mothers that nurse don't normally go through the changes that Moms that don't nurse do. I never had hair loss after having a child, I nursed mine. Have you had your thyroid checked? That can cause hair loss. Lack of vitamins and minerals can cause hair loss. Are you taking post natal vitamins? Don't wash your hair more than once a week for awhile and use a leave in conditioner. That will help with the hair loss.

Mine took several years to stop. I started using shampoo and conditioner for thin or thinning hair and it finally stopped. Good Luck

Hey there!
Congrats on your son. If you haven't already done so, visit your Primary MD or GYN. Many times, hair loss can be related to either hormones or metabolic abnormalities. All of which are usually corrected pretty easily. Check to se if you have a family history of hypo/hyperthyroid, polysyctic ovarian syndrome (for ex) all of which may cause hair loss.

Chances are, it is probably your pregnancy hormones re-adjusting. So patience may be required. But if it isn't pregnancy-related, then any hormone abnormality is not serious and can be easily treated.

Good luck to you:)

Ok, mommy. I remember well those hair loss days. One of the after effects of pregnancy no one tells us about. I thought I was going bald!!!! Anyway, it's due to hormonal changes. Your body needs balancing, you need sleep and ofcourse coping with new stress is always a factor. It lasted over 7 months for me, less hair loss after 6 months, but perhaps because I was breast feeding. However, mom is a hair stylist and I was blessed with her advice. Try not to wear your hair out with mouse, too much blowdrying or harsh chemicals. Good conditioners and hair masks can help, but I reccommend something called hair protein. After washing your hair, you apply it on the roots and leave in for 10-15min. This helps the roots become stronger. Find this protein at salon products distributors. Some salons may have it. Also, hormone balancing tea helps.....chamomile and/or mother's milk is useful.
Good luck!

With my first two it didn't noticeably happen ever. I have super thick hair, but it is blond and very fine. I rarely notice shedding hair, but my hair brush is always full of hair so obviously it happens. With the first two it just gradually went back to normal. With the third, after I stopped breastfeeding I started getting handfuls of hair when I showered - have to admit it freaked me out a bit. But it stopped and my hair is pretty much back to where it started (darker, but just as thick) so all that shedding wasn't a problem.

Hi A.,

Congratulations on your son! I just had my 2nd daughter in May and had the same worries about my hair falling out. Here's an article on BabyCenter.com that helped me understand post-pregnancy hair loss better. Hope it helps.

It should stop within the next 2 or 3 months. In my opinion. My son was born in February, and mine finally stopped really falling out about a month ago. It slowed for about a month before that, too. I had the same thing happen when my daughter was born. I honestly thought I was going to be bald....or at the very least have bald spots. Neither one really happened!LOL
Hang in there, the end is near!

A.,

besides nurising & vitamin issues, I would ask your OB or GP to check your thyroid. Go with the obvious stuff first, take vitamins, don't wash your hair daily, if you are still nursing don't worry unless you are still losing your hair, 2-3 months after you stop.

There may be other endocrine issues that can hair loss but the throid is the most common.
