I just had my little girl 2 months ago. Before I got pregnant I always lost a few pieces of hair everyday when I would shampoo. Now my question is, why while I was pregnant did my hair stop falling out? I know that hormones do play a part in this, but does anyone know which hormone it is, and can u get it in a supplement. My hair is thin and I feel like I will run out of hair at this rate. Please help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone that responded. I take it that this is a normal situation that most women go through. I guess the only thing I can do is sit back, relax and watch my little girl grow up into a beautiful teenager.... then I can start pulling my own hair out :)

The hair loss usually stops around 6 months after the baby's birth. Estrogen is the cause. I used Biotin after the hair loss got severe. It definitely helped.

are you still on prenatal vitamins. I would think they would have been helping you out a lot. They made a hug difference in my hair and nails :)

Try Vemma Liquid nutrition. Everyone taking it notices their hair getting thicker, and it shines from the body getting the right vitamins and minerals. Several ladies, one 85 and the other 68, wrote to me that a little bald spot had filled in totally. I know my hairdresser always comments on how fast my hair grows. I have to go every four weeks to have it cut. You can go on line and buy a bundle, which is a sample of the different deliveries. http://annnoble.vemma.com

My hair did the same thing...I lost lots everytime I washed and brushed it. I was told it's caused by the drop and change in hormones from being pregnant. My hair did return to normal about 3 months after I was done nursing. Hang in there...it will come back. I do know there is a supplement you can buy at Walmart that's actually called hair, skin, and nails. Its from the Spring Valley brand.

i went to get my hair cut and colored 6 months after having my second baby. i had a clip in my hair; when the hairdresser pulled the clip out and started brushing. he asked me if i knew that i had hair falling out... it was embarrassing. the good news is that both of my children are over 16 months and my hair is back to normal. i breastfed with my second until she was 5 monhts, so it takes times for thoses hormones to rid from the body. good luck

I lost what felt like half of my hair after each kid! Within a few months of having a baby it would come out in hand fulls in the shower or brushing it. It was quite gross actually. The good news is that eventually it stops doing that and returns to normal. I didn't really notice when it stopped so it must just gradually get lighter until you just stop losing more hair than normal.
I am not sure why it stops during pregnancy but I do know that prenatal vitamins are very good for your hair and nails so you may just want to keep taking them. You should anyway if you are nursing.Don't worry having a baby won't make you bald. But a mouthy 10 year old boy might just make you pull it all out! ;)Enjoy your baby. Hope this helps

Hi Shelly, I am not sure of what hormone plays a part in your hair shedding but I dont think its nothing to be alarmed about. I have two children and during my pregnancy, my hair was so thick and pretty but I really couldnt do much with it, then after my pregnancy my hair shedded a lot. After about 6 mths it stopped.

Shelley,
All of us are programmed to lose a certain amount of hair every day. When we are pregnant, most women's hair stops shedding (at least to some degree), resulting in what appears to be fulling, thicker hair. Once the baby is born and hormones settle back to where they were pre-pregnancy, we are back to our regular shedding schedule PLUS we shed the hairs we should have lost but didn't while we were pregnant. I don't know what hormone controls this, but eventually you'll stop feeling like you're losing tons, and it will just return back to its normal routine. It is possible that your hair will change in other ways - my sister and I both had straight hair pre-babies, and after the babies were born, it got wavier. But the shedding eventually returned back to normal.

Same thing happened to me too. It has stopped and I am back to my normal hair shed, my daughter is 17 months now. About three months ago I decided to go get my hair cut off, it was 3 inches past my shoulders, because I had 3 inch twigs everywhere! I did read somewhere that your body hangs on to your hair during pregnancy, but I can't remember why. I miss that because my hair is thin and fine too! My sister suggested Biotin also. Haven't tried it yet, but she uses it every day. Good luck and know that you are not alone in this!!

Hair Vitamins
you can get them almost anywhere, some are for hair, nails & skin. Even if it says take 2 to 3 a day, one a day resolves the problem.
My hair started breaking and thinning in one spot, this resolved the issue I was having.

It is pregnancy hormones. Not sure which one. It will last a few months and then your hair will be back to it's normal wieght/thickness. My son is almost 4 months old and mine started about a month and a half ago, it's still happening and it's actually kind of gross because I do pull out handfuls of it every time I run my fingers through. I know you'd love to keep it since you've got thin hair but there's really no way to.

I went to my doctor just a month ago because I am having the exact same issue. I know it happens to a lot of women post pregnancy, but my daughter just turned one. I was told that it was completely normal. That the thinning I am experiencing was delayed a bit because of nursing...and since I am now weaning the hormones are all out of whack - apparently it just happens that way to some women. Just to be sure the doc ran some blood tests and examined my head. He said that it usually lasts for six to eight months...which had me in tears. He said that there are remedies people swear by, but he doesn't know of anything that really works. He swore I wasn't losing as much hair as I thought. And he mentioned to avoid rubber bands or pulling it back, it puts stress on the roots. My problem started about six weeks before my appointment and I have noticed that it is slowing a tad. Instead of fistfuls of hair, I am getting little handfuls. I am not as anxious about it any more, but I will be glad when it stops!

Shelley, it sounds like some type of hormonal inbalance. I know of a great nutritional supplement that will help you. The supplements are so safe even preganant women take it as their prenatal vitamins.

Let me know if interested and I will give you details.

Blessings,

A.

Oh the hair loss. It's so lovely; especially cleaning the drain after a shower! I would lose handfuls whenever I ran my hands through my hair. It will ease up. My 2nd is now 6 months old and I'm not losing that much any more.

I have the same issue but my daughter is 9!! Obviously not directly related to pregnancy anymore. We've ruled out any medical issue for it (thyroid, etc). So my doctor does think it's hormonal. She actually recommended a vitamin supplement called Biotin. Try that, can't hurt right?!
