Hair - Chicago,IL

I know this is superficial and I know there are far, far more important things in life, but here goes:

Our baby has a nice head of hair, more than many babies her age, with a little bit of a wave to it, but it's fine in texture. My husband (and his whole family) has beautiful thick wavy hair and I've been hoping our daughter inherited it.

Even as a little girl, I remember struggling with my hair...it was fine and thin, and always looked oily if I didn't wash it every single day... all throughout grammar school I'd look longingly at other girls with thick pony tails or braids. At this point, I'm not sure I can tell who's hair she has...when do you know whether a child will have thin or thick hair?

Thanks.

What can I do next?

I had black curly hair when I was born. By a year old it was blonde.
My son was born with blonde hair and everyone said it wouldn't last. Well, he's 15 and super blonde still.

I think it's too soon to worry about how your daughter's hair will turn out. It will be what it will be and I'm sure she'll be hate it either way.
My daughter has curly hair and wanted straight, I had straight hair and wanted curly.
We get what we get.

I don't know when so you can skip the rest of this, but I had fine skinny hair I guess and my sister had long thick blonde hair all of the time. My mother always made me get my hair cut short, very short, very ugly and told me it was because my hair was so fine. The worst was when I was in highschool and all of the girls had long hair. I look at highschool pictures and there about two of us with short, ugly haircuts. Not even anything cute. So now in spite of the fact that I am way past when I am supposed to have long hair (although I guess the trend is changing) I wear long hair in my fifties. My point is: no matter what kind of hair she has, let her where it long or short if it gives her confidence. And if it appears oily, there are so many different kinds of shampoos and conditioners now even from just a few years ago. It is not superficial. Hair is attached to our bodies and we are who we are and we all want to look nice. (Well most of us). Hug her for us.

This is an important question, I totally understand! My daughter was bald til she was about 3. She had very blond, wispy fuzz on her head for years! I was SO worried and people always thought she was a little boy, even with the pink outfits and bows I taped to her head!! She's 17 and has thick, beautiful hair and has kept it long all of her life. I think she's making up for all the baby pictures she's seen of herself with very little hair! Don't worry Mom, it'll grow!

My daughter who was bald on both side and in the back of her hair until she was almost 5 years old. Now it is thick, long and curly like the rest of my family. Don't panic, a change is coming, you just have to be patient for it.

My daughter was basically bald until around 2 - then she got some little curls on the back of her head. I was really begining to wonder if she would ever have much hair. She is now 12 and has more hair than we know what to do with!! Not only is it curly, it is very thick! I'd say that it started to thicken when she was around 7 or 8 - so it may take a while before you know.

You won't really know what kind of hair your child will have until they are older. I have natural curly hair and the texture/curl changed several times before I was 5.

You usually have to wait until they're 6 months to age 1 to tell so that there baby hair comes out and they get their final hair in. My daughter had thin hair and then it became thick. When it was thin it was so hard to manage so we just let it stay short to use clips in it. Our son's is thin and hasn't thicken yet and he's 2. But it grows very fast.

My daughter was born with thick black curly hair on her head and most of her body! She looked like a little monkey!! Within a year it all fell out and came in very blonde. At 13 she is still a blonde but has dark brows and lashes and is generally hairy. My middle son has the straight thin 'protestant' hair as my mother called mine (hahahaha), but even though it was really white, it started getting dark around kindergarten. My oldest son was never a blonde, had gorgeous golden ringlets, till I cut it short (sigh), it is only just now (at 18) is turning black like his father's family. It's interesting how they're all so different!! I wondered too when my kids were little how they'd change, hair included. Take lots of pictures and movies and enjoy the little one!!

I have fine wavy hair but a ton of it. I didn't have great hair as a child - just ok. I would say when I went through puberty is when it got really thick.
It's really hard to tell with little kids. If your daughter has nice hair as a little baby she will probably continue to get thicker hair as she gets older.
My daughter is almost 3 and has great hair for her age and always as a baby too. There are some girls at her school that really didn't start getting their hair to come in and grow until now so if your daughter has hair and nice hair I would think she probably got lucky and inherited dad's :)
Even if she does get your hair though don't worry. Things have changed so much since you were younger. They make products that you can put in your hair so you don't have to wash it everyday and dry shampoos too. On light hair you can just use baby powder on the roots of your hair to absorb oil so you don't have to wash it every day.

My doctor told me once that around age 5 is when you can tell how their hair should be. However, now that my girls are going through puberty, their hair is sooo thin and oily. SOme of their friends are getting thicker. Go figure! Just keep her eating healthy!
