18 Months Old and Still No Hair?

Hello. My daughter is 18 months old and she still does not have any hair. The hair she does have is very light and is only about 2 inches long. All of the other girls in her daycare and even the boys have a lot more hair than she does so it is starting to worry me. Has anyone else experienced their child's hair waiting this long to grow?

What can I do next?

My niece didn't grow much hair until she was in kindergarten and now she's 16 and you'd never know it. I wouldn't worry.

My poor daughter was about 3 or 4 before her hair realy started to come in. The poor baby was almost bald until then. I wouldn't worry about it because once it starts growing it will grow quick.

my daughter was the same way. occasionally we would feel concerned because other kids were wearing pig tails or other hair styles and people were still mistaking our daughter for a boy!! our daughters hair was thin, light and very short.
now she is 2 and a half and for about 6 months now it has been thickening a little and the color is darker...it looks like she has pretty highlights. it is not really growing very fast in length...it resembles cindy lou hoo from the grinch movie! but we are no longer concerned.
just be patient. it may take 3 years but it will grow. but be sure to ask the pediatrician if you think in your heart she has something like alopecia.

As photos from my childhood attest, I was without any significant amount of hair until I was nearly 2 and a half years old. By the time I turned 3, however, I had already had my first haircut and needed another one! My husband was the same way, but both of our children were born with full heads of hair. There just seems to be no rhyme or reason to the whole "hair" thing.

I wouldn't worry. As long as she is developing normally in other areas, she sounds perfectly normal. I've found that comparing my kids to other kids can only lead to needless worry.

Best of luck to you.

There is quite a bit of variation for hair growth. I was pretty much bald as a baby until I was nearly 3. My son also has had baby hair. He had his first haircut at about 18 months (primarily from one area on top where it was longer than the rest) and did not need another until over a year later. He's 3 now and it's still very thin and baby-like compared to the other kids in his class, but we're starting to have to cut it regularly and it's beginning to thicken a little.

Hi A.! Don't worry about it, her hair will grow! My mom has always said (and we've seen pictures) that she had very blonde peach fuzz when she was a baby up untill she was 3. It did grow eventually. I guess that's just how some babies are.

I think you are kind of lucky...no hair at birth means you experienced less heartburn during pregnancy! I know it must be frustrating for you to have a daughter with little hair because you have very little to work with (e.g. nothing to put a bow in, etc.) I bet she wears pink all the time and dresses so you are never questioned if she is a boy...that's what I see myself doing anyway. If you want to take matters into your own hands, try feeding your baby foods that benefit the hair, skin and nails. These are foods that contain folic acid, and vitamins A, C, D E, B(1,2,& 6). If it were me, I would also give my child gummy vitamins (children's) and feed her jello (the gelatin also helps hair and nails). Good luck!

I didn't have hair until I was 2 years old. My theory is that babies with curly hair takes longer to grow in because it's courser than straight hair.

A.,
I would not worry about it. I had some hair (very little) but did not get much more until I turned 4. I think everybody is different, and they will eventually grow more hair. Like I said, I really did not get any until I was 4, but my children have a lot of hair at ages 3 & 4.

Hello.....first thing first....bald is beautiful!!! When my parents adopted me I was 18 months old.....NO hair....well a little peach fuzzy that was so blonde you couldn't see it unless the sun was beaming down on it....then I just looked like I had a shiny head! It was until I was almost 3 before I had hair that you were able to do anything with!
Now I have a 2 1/2 yr old boy......who got blessed with his father's thick hair and was born with hair. And my poor little girl (9 months now) got cursed with her mother's hair!!! None!! what little she does have is very very fine, blonde fuzz! and in the back....none....where she rubbed off what she had!
Your little one will get it when the time comes......I know that she is beautiful! I just keep telling Paige (my 9 month old) Bald is Beautiful! Because the two other two girls in our circle, one is 3 weeks old and the other is 4 weeks younger, have a FULL head of hair!!! Bald is Beautiful!
I do miss putting the cute little bows in her hair.....but hey....what can ya do tape them to her head?

Hello A.. My 8 y/o didn't have any hair either until she was about 2 1/2; now she has very brown fine hair. My 4 y/o didn't have any hair either and now she is has blonde hair and has had one hair cut besides her bangs. So, you little one might get blonde hair or a darker color, but it will grow in time. I am sure your little one will have beautiful hair soon. Just be careful when she plays in the sun; I had to rub sunblock in my little ones "hair" in the summer. Best of Luck and just tell her how pretty she is!

I have had 3 little ones with no hair... My oldest looked like she was bald till she was 2-3, her hair was about 1-2" and as blond as could be – but when it come in she had the prettiest blond curly hair that everyone loved. The two younger ones were lucky enough to have reddish/blond hair so you can at lease see it a little. But in time it does come in - the oldest is now 12 yrs and had a thick head of hair... so thick it drives her nuts sometimes. My 3 yr old girl now has about 4-5” curly copper hair and my 18 mo old boy is like your little girl – only has 1-2” long hair (straight) but his is copper. We are hoping the baby boy on the way will end up with Daddy’s black hair… but time will tell on that one. I personal think bald babies are cuter – but I guess having 3 that way will make me a little bi-us.

Enjoy her pretty little head as long as you can… ones it’s covered in hair you’ll only have pictures and memories of it. LOL – everyone told me that my oldest head was perfect… that’s why it didn’t have hair to cover it. :)

My son who is now almost 5 did not really even start growing his hair until 14 months. He was bald until then. And when it did start growing in it was bleach blonde. You could not even see it. So don't worry it will come in and when it does it will probably be thick and grow a lot faster than most kids. I have to cut his hair just about every 3 weeks because it grows so fast. Just give it time and it will come in.
