Groundhog Day Predictions

We’ve got not one, but two groundhogs that show up yearly on local tv. Puxatawney Phil and Staten Island Chuck. Phil calls for more winter, Chuck early spring.

Just curious what your local stations do. Who do they trot out?

Not parenting related but I hope you will respond anyway.

LOL - never heard of Pierre C. Shadeaux but that's a great name!

Boston doesn't have a local rodent, so they show Punxatawney Phil and usually mention the Staten Island groundhog. Apparently this year the debate (between those 2) is between 4 and 6 weeks of winter. But, since we've had horrible cold temps up here, and since last year we still had no spring at all (we had the heat on in early June and couldn't plant much until later than that), I think we're owed some damn warm weather. I'll embrace any ground hog who agrees with me.

Then again, Boston is only talking about the Super Bowl so it would be hard for any groundhog to get much air time anyway.

i'm not actually sure. when i do remember to check it's usually Puxatawney Phil i find.
i go by my pony's coat. she's not even beginning to shed yet despite the weird bitter-cold-to-balmy-warmth see-saw this area has experienced.

Well, there are no groundhogs here in Hawai'i. However, we have mongoose (mongooses?). They predict 364 more days of summer.

To be honest, I miss seasons. I miss autumn and winter comfort food, like spaghetti, and chili and soups on a cool fall evening. It's pretty much Spam and pineapple and seaweed and ramen year round here! I find it challenging to make summer-appropriate lighter meals 365 days a year. I grew up rotating meals according to four seasons.

My college actually has a groundhog here today to entertain the kids. I was wondering what happens when they disagree... Does someone out there count up the predictions from all the groundhogs nationwide and then go with the majority??

We love Punxatawney Phil!
We visited him a few summers ago, saw his place in the local library and had a brief informal tour of Gobblers Knob - and it was just fun! - and a lot warmer than it is in February!

We have Chesapeake Chuck - but he doesn't get up at dawn - he'll check for his shadow around noon.

I think Pierre C. Shadeaux is a nutria (tail gives it away) but he makes his weather predictions on Groundhog Day too.

While slightly warmer temperatures would be nice - I'm in no hurry for 90 degree summers with high humidity.
The seed catalogs are already flooding my mailbox and gardening fever will start soon.

So funny, my kids and me were just laughing this morning at what an odd tradition this is! lol, Also weird that it corresponds to (yesterday) the halfway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. This "holiday" Imbolc, has long been celebrated by Gaelic, Pagans, Wiccan etc. Now in modern day we've made it about a groundhog and his shadow. Things that make you go hmmmm..........haha

Maybe it means both, spring will be coming soon, but with some cold snaps interspersed, or it will be a cooler spring than usual. I don't know but I guess I'm in the minority cheering for the cooler weather, considering how brutal summer, and part of spring, can be in hot, humid South Florida. These days of 70 degree weather with nights into the 60s or mid 50s is perfect.

Puxatawney Phil is Pennsylvania based and considered "it" when it comes to groundhogs. Then there are regional ones everywhere else. Like, I know Ohio does Buckeye Chuck.

Dumbest damn holiday. I don't get it.
