Goopy Eye

Hello.

My 3 month olds eye began to water excessively yesterday. I noticed a goopy substance developing in the corner of her eye late yesterday (no redness). I wiped it away with a warm cloth and it appeared to be fine. This morning it reappeared and I have since had to wipe her eye with warm cloths a few times to clear away the goop. A family member suggested that it could be a cold. I have also found in several books that it could be a blocked duct or even allergies.

We are already scheduled for a check up on Friday and her doctor has not returned my call today. I have referred to five of my baby medical books for information and none of them suggest that this is an urgent condition. When it comes to my baby I don't want to dismiss even the slightest condition.

Has anyone experienced this with their baby? Help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I would like to say thank you for all of your responses. My doctor rescheduled my Friday appointment for the first appointment this morning, however, my daughters' eye cleared up and was absolutely fine this morning. The doctor advised that it was probably just a blocked duct. Cleaning and massaging her eye with warm cloths yesterday must have resolved the blockage.

Again, thank you and I appreciate everyones help.

Hello! My son had the same exact thing when he was about 3 months old. His was because of a tear duct. My doctor gave me an annointment for his eye, and we used that for about a week, and everything was fine. Hopefully this helps you out.

Don't worry, but it sound like pink eye. Which is no big deal. Pink eye is only a "cold" that has moved to the mucus lining in your eye (instead of your nose). You definately need to see the doctor and he/she will give you some antibiotic eye drops. Good luck.

A baby I daycare had the same thing last week.It ended up being a blocked tear duct. I had to wipe it several times during the day,and I had to message it through out the day. But make sure you wash your hands after just incase, and don't let anyone else use the cloth you use, incase it ends up being pink eye it can transfer easily. I know they say pink eye makes your eye a pink/reddish color. But when my son gets it he never turns colors. Good luck I hope it is nothing.

when my daughter was about 3 months she had the same issue. i thought is was pink aand the DR. rushed us in. turns out that she just had a blocked tear duct and gave a a solution drop. either way they will most likely put her on drops a few times a day for a week or so. just keep wiping out the goop with a warm towel but use a different one everytime as to not recontaminate. she will be just fine

My 5 month old had the same issue about a month ago. He actually had pink eye, but the pediatrician said that it might not be able to be diagnosed right away.
What I was told was that if it went away right away then it was viral conguntivitis and if it didn't go away right away (more than 3 days) it is bacterial conguntivitis.

I had also done the research and wondered if it was a clogged duct or a cold.

I think you will be fine to wait until Friday. Be sure though to wipe AWAY from the corner of her eye when wiping since you don't want to re-infect if it is pink eye.

Hi Kimberly,

I have experienced this with my son and occasionally I still do and he is 4 years old now. Like other moms said, keep it clean and yes the Dr. will prescribe eye drops. I have found that if I let it go without taking him to the Dr. right away, the next day he wakes up with sticky eyes and it turns into conjuctivities (pink eye.) With that said, it is nothing to be alarmed about but do not miss that Dr. appointment on Friday. Good luck.

Call your doctor's office again until you get an answer! It does sound like a blocked duct or maybe onset of a cold. Keep an eye (no pun intended) on it. Continue to keep it clean. Good luck!

When my baby was about 1 month and 1/2 her eye was really watery. When I took her to the doctor he said just to rub her eye and around her eye with warm water. After about a week 1/2 of doing that, it didn't work. So then one of my family members suggested to use warm tea. It started going away but slowly. I then looked up on-line and found out that your eye duct is located on the side of your nose so you have to rub down from the eye to clear the blocked eye duct. After doing that for about a week it was gone.

It sounds like a clogged tear duct. My daughter had the same thing. It's not an urgent condition, so seeing your doctor on Friday is fine. Your doctor may prescribe a medication to rub on the duct if it doesn't open by itself.
