Hi J.!
I was going to say the same thing as Diane--cheese! Good luck getting rid of her diarrhea. That is never fun and it's got to be even worse for a little one.
Sorry this is not a pretty request. My daughter is 19 months and has had diarrhea for almost 8 days now. It has been going from somewhat loose to pretty liquidy but pretty normal in color. The doctor has not been concerned because she shows no signs of dehydration and has been otherwise healthy and happy. We've cut out milk and have been giving her more starchy foods and bananas. It had been getting better but this morning she had an almost watery yellow diaper. She is as happy as she can be. Daycare won't let her stay there like this but I know there isn't medicine we can give her. Any home remedies or ideas? Any foods we should definitely stay away from besides fruit? Thanks!

She could be teething. When my son was that age and he was getting some teeth in he had diarrhea also. If that is the case there is not much you can do but to wait it out.
You said your avoiding milk, that's good however try giving her yogurt, chedder cheese, rice, baked potatoes without butter and avoid all red drinks even red popcicles also stay away from apple juice. Crackers also seem to help bind. I run an in home daycare and this has been going around. Some of the childrden recover only to have it back two weeks latter. Also GNC has something that works great for diarrhea it's call Asodopholis I've used it on my own children. Good luck.

Try getting Culturelle from your pharmacy. You can mix it in with really anything. It has worked for all of my kiddos
Good Morning J., I haven't read others responses so if anyone else mentioned doing the BRAT diet I apologize.
Banana's, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. No milk or juice, water would be better. Juice can cause redness and runny bowls also. Only juice our nurse told us to use was Pear juice as it was thicker and not as acidic..
If a really bad bleeding rash appears with all the acid in his poop get Maalox & A & D Ointment.
A thumb sized glob of A & D in a small cover-able container, mix in about a Tbsp of Maalox's, smooth that over his little hinny. It works wonders quickly. Cover the remaining and use when needed. We have used this on Zane 2, for a while now when he gets this way.
God Bless you J.

Hi J.,
I feel for your little girl and I hope she gets better soon. I'm going to keep this short since I'm at work :)
If you have been giving her juice, I would hold off for now. Also, acidic foods caused diarrhea for my son. Maybe try that for your daughter?
Good luck.

I read your request and figured I would respond, not so much with advice but sympathy. My daughter was 16 months old last December and went through a month of diarrhea. I was worried when they found that a little boy at her daycare had crypto-spyrodium but after getting her tested, we found out she did not have it. In fact, we never found out anything 'wrong' with her but she did have the smelliest diapers in the world!!
Why will daycare not let her stay if the doctors say she is not sick? Maybe she is lactose intolerant?
Good luck!
Try a probiotic! Sometimes when little ones get a virus and have diarrhea it can take a while for their little systems to get back into check. This happens with our 2 year old. They have probiotics for toddlers at the drug store. We've always used Culturelle. I believe it is in a pink box. Just open up the capsule and mix it into her food. Just give it to her once or twice a day for a few days. That should clear it up.
Here's the Culturelle website for more info: http://www.culturelle.com/
Hope she feels better soon!
J., Try giving her yogurt. Also, Sweet Acidopholus Milk, it is just 2% milk with the Acidopholus added to it.
Good Luck, M.
I'm sorry I don't have any advice, but I can tell you that I have been there! My son had diarrhea for 14 days straight. Our doctor said that he wasn't contagious and there wasn't really anything that he could do unless he got dehydrated. Sounds like you are running into the same problem. Our doctor sent our daycare a note and fortunately they were willing to work with us. The biggest problem for us was the fact that he ended up with a bleeding diaper rash from so much acid on his bottom. That is when things got really difficult and I had to take him out of daycare because I knew that I would be more on top of that than they would.
If I can remember correctly, our doc just said no milk and when you start back on dairy, go with yogurt first. You might just skip to the yogurt to help build some healthy bacteria in her intestines.
Do not give your child medication! If there is a bug (common at daycare) it needs to clear out of her intestine/colon! After 8 days, I'd demand her doctor do a fecal on her, to rule out any bugs...although not common this time of year, there are several bacteria that can cause prolonged irritation of the gut. I'm sorry your little one is sick, but once you have a fecal, you can take her to daycare with proof she's not sick and move on to an allergist. Allergies can cause the
same symptoms.
Thinking from an epidemiological perspective, I would want to flush my child...tons of water, pedialite, etc. If it were a bug, hydration will help.
Good luck!!!
Poor baby! Both my 20 month old and 5 yr old had this last year at different times, thank goodness. But my neighbor is our pediatric nurse practitioner and when I told her about our problem, she suggested we try Culturelle Probiotics for Kids. She said sometimes kids get digestive problems (loose stools & diarrhea) from a bad enzyme in their system and they just need to clean them out. She said this stuff is the "good" enzyme like yogurt has only in a large dose so she would feel better quicker. I found the kid version at Walgreens for $12 and the adult version at Walmart for $25 (for my husband with the same problem a few weeks ago) - but worth it. I emptied one packet in the kids' applesauce and let it dissolve and fed it to them once a day at the same time every day. By Day 2, they felt better already, but I kept it up for 6 days to be sure it wouldn't come back. Try it while you're waiting on your pediatrician. It was worth not paying the $25 copay for me plus all of those tests! Then if it doesn't work, then definitely take her in to the doc. Good luck! Hope it works!

Have you tried cheese, that is a natural blocker. If she will eat cheese give her that until the diarrhea stops. Hope it helps
I've used "Culturelle." It's a powder in a capsule which I open up and put in pudding or yogurt. It's a probiotic, builds up the good digestive organisms. I used it when my 2 year old was on an antibiotic, and it helped with the diarrhea then. Just one per day.
We had this issue and it went on for a couple of weeks, but the thing that finally helped was when the new pediatrician suggested the "brat diet." Now, what I've heard of as the brat diet before was different from this. She said for us to take our daughter to McDonalds & get a happy meal with the cheeseburger and fries. She said to make her eat them. The yucky stuff in McDonalds cheeseburgers and fries helped and our daughter got better. Could have been a coincidence, but now whenever we've had that problem, we go to McDonalds and it helps.
Also, there's something you can get from the pharmacist that you can add to juice that helps. It's an enzyme or something. Ask the pharmacist and they'll know. It's not medicine, but more like returning the natural balance to her system.
Good luck!
I would never make my children stay out that long. Most employers are not going to be that understanding. We haven't had it this year. I've been wondering when it would make it's rounds. I request my parents bring sleepers that can be zipped up with snaps at the top and or bibby overalls so that the little ones can't get their hands into their pants in any way. I wash my hands like crazy and use bleach on every surface I can. I've never had it spread to all my kids in the daycare. In fact, most of the time it doesn't spread at all. These kids pick it up when they are at home and when they are out and about with their moms. Good hyegeine habits would squelch this sort of thing. Unfortunately, not enough people work hard enough at it. We love going to the indoor playgrounds. But when I hear this stuff is going around we just stay home. If your child does not have a fever, see if your doctor will write a note for the daycare to take them back.
