P.R.
Have you tried the BRAT diet. BRAT stands for bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. It really works to bring the diarea under control.
Hi Mom's, I need a little advise. My daughter has had bad diaper rash - blisters and all for the last 3 days. She also has diarea. We have been appling diaper rash cream with every diaper change and we are changing her diaper as soon as we know it is dirty. My question is, should I cut her milk out if her diet? She loves milk, but not sure if I should do that. I am giving her peidialyte. What are the best foods for her to have at this time? I heard yogurt is good? Is that true? I would love to hear what other mom's have done to help.

Sounds like what the grandson gets. They tried butt butter which helped more than the others rash ointments but wound up having to take him to the drs. It's yeast infection. Runny poo make's it worse on him.
First off, you should probably call her pediatrician. It sounds like the rash may have turned into a yeast infection. My little girl gets them everytime she's on antibiotics or gets bad diarreah. They usually give us Nystasin (sp?) cream & it clears up within 12-24 hours.
Secondly, try the BRAT diet. That's Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. Basically anything high fiber to help control the diarreah. Yogurt can help balance the good bacteria in her colon & can ease the diarreah too. My four year old had diarreah so bad last year that he had blood in his stool. Our Nurse Practitioner put him on the BRAT diet & it cleared up in about a day. Since he won't touch plain rice, she said anything made with rice (rice pudding, Rice Krispies, etc.).
I hope Asita feels better very soon! God bless!
Sorry to hear about your daughter!! It is definitely no fun to try to change a diaper when it hurts them so bad. I would cut out as much dairy as you can. I also would suggest using PURE cornstarch on top of your diaper cream. I don't know what kind of diaper cream you are using but with my 23 yr old I used Bag Balm, for cow utters, because she had such bad rashes and with my younger kids, and my babysitting kids, I have used Pinksalve (I don't think that is how it is spelled but it is GOOD) and then I put the cornstarch on top of that. Not the baby kind but the kind you cook with. GOOD LUCK!!!
I had the same problem with my 18 month old around Christmas time. The doctor said to just feed her normally with the exception of any kind of citrus foods or drink. She said that would just prolong the diarea. She also gave me some prescription "miracle butt cream" the the pharmacy had to mix together. I rotated that with Lotramin every diaper change. Hope this helps.
When we went through this with our daughter, we were told to use the brats diet as well. It was also recommended to use Pinxav (pronounced pink salve). It worked wonders! You just have to be careful because it will stain anything it comes in contact with! It made her blisters and redness look 100 times better after the first application. My other suggestion is to push the peidialyte as much as you can get her to drink. You might even try gatorade as well. You definitely want to make sure that she doesn't get dehydrated! We couldn't get our daughter to drink enough and wound up in the ER. I'm sure you've already had this conversation with your doctor! I hope she starts feeling better soon.
Hey A.,
Something that always helped my kids was to clean them well with soap and water and then dry out thier bottoms with a hair dryer on low with very low or no heat. Dry them for as long as you can, it will really help. Then apply a thick layer of what ever cream you like, we used desitin, I hated the smell but it worked for my daughter who got terrible rashes easily. If the dryer does not help, I would take her to the doctor to make sure that it is not a yeast infection.

We just had this same problem about 3 weeks ago. I asked some of my friends who are Peds nurses, ans they told me to cut out all dairy and anything with a lot of sugar (juices, etc). They recommended the BRAT diet (which several others have mentioned), regular yogurt (not the Trix and other really sweet types), chicken, mashed potatoes, and go to the pharmacy and get some Culturelle. These are capsules that you can open up and add to food or drink (no taste) and it will help "bulk up" the bowel movements. They told me to do it 3 times a day (since the boys had very watery diarrea) until it got better. Be sure to keep her hydrated. Doc said as long as they have at least 2 wet diapers a day, they should be OK and not dehydrated. Good luck.
My daughter used to get dieaper rashes that were so bad that her skin would peel. The pediatrician had me dab Maalox on her butt prior to the diaper rash cream. It stops the acid from eating at the skin. He also indicated as much air time as possible. It worked - in fact, my sister does the same thing for her son when his rear is all rashey.
I doubt that milk is the culprit - probably a stomach bug - I would suggest avoinding any foods that would promote the diahhrea and sut down her acidy foods (like tomatoes, etc.)
Hi A.,
So sorry to hear about your daughter. I agree with Shaun that you need to cut out dairy (at least most) and use a really THICK diaper cream. The original desitin is really thick and awesome. We ended up using vaselline one time, too, because we were using so much and it is cheap. You can use as much as you need and get a giant tub of it.
If you are having trouble totally getting rid of the milk, try a lactose free version and see how she does. Or try skim milk, so that the fat content isn't so high. I know that when my kids had diahrrea last time I had to go to the lactose free kind and it seemed to help. They drank it, too!
Hope the baby girl is feeling better soon.

Hi-
I agree with one of the postings about the BRAT diet- bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. Oatmeal is a good food to use also. Staying away from baby wipes is best also. Use a washcloth and warm water so as not to continue to irritate her skin. We have sued aquaphor in the past and it works well. Good luck--I know it is hard to see the little ones suffer with this.
So sorry to hear about your daughter! Should should try yeast infection cream. It sounds weird, but my dauaghter used to get really bad rashes everytime she would cut teeth and it would clear up the rash. Good Luck! C.
If your daughter has blisters, there is a good chance that she has a yeast infection. When my youngest dd was a baby and had a bad diaper rash with blisters and raw spots, the doctor told me to use Lotrimin AF. It is for athlete's foot but he said it was safe to use and would clear up the yeast infection. After one application, there was a noticeable improvement and then the rash cleared up in a couple days.
We just finished with the lovely stomach bug at our house. So not fun! Definitely cut all dairy out of her diet until she is feeling better. Give her lots and lots of water. If she'll eat, make sure she's eating bland foods. The BRAT (Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet works wonders. She can also eat plain chicken and oatmeal. Stay away from any and all dairy (cheese, milk, yogurt), caffeine, greasy foods, anything with lots of fiber, or anything too sweet. I'm betting that diarrhea is causing her diaper rash. I know that was the case with us. My daughter's diaper rash was really really red and almost to the point of bleeding. It cleared up as soon as the diarrhea went away. We use Balmex and lay it on THICK. Don't rub it in. You can also use plain Vaseline. At this point, since you're changing her diaper so much it's just to create a barrier between her and the mess. Also, instead of using diaper wipes, which can increase the irritation, use a washcloth with warm water. We were at the point where we were giving my daughter a bath almost 3 times a day. It seemed to help clean her off a little better than just baby wipes.
Modifying her diet for a few days will definitely help with the diarrhea, and hopefully that will help with the rash. Good luck! Sick kids are no fun!
Try a different diaper rash cream. When my son's rashes have been really bad, I use a "recipe" that my pharmacist gave me. I mix aquaphor and maalox (1:1). I usually mix a cup of maalox and a cup (or a bit more to make it guey) of aquaphor. The maalox draws the "sourness" out of the diarrhea that irritates the rash and the aquaphor calms the skin and protects it. I also use other rash creams and change them out and have found that triple paste works really well at night and helps heal. You don't need to cut out milk but it wouldn't be a bad idea. Instead of using yogurt go to your local pharmacy and get Florastore which is a medicine especially for kids and their intestines. It has always worked with my son - much better than yogurt (since yogurt is dairy and is not always so helpful while the diarrhea is happening). You're doing the right thing in changing her right after she is dirty.
In order to heal the diaper rash, you're going to need to stop the diarrhea. You might try some probiotics. If you suspect dairy is the initial cause of the diahrea, you'll want to look for a vegan probiotic as many probiotics come from dairy sources.
We just dealt with a similar issue, but the cause of our son's diarrhea was antibiotics. The probiotics slowed down the frequency of the stooling and made them less watery. Still, he was pretty sore for several weeks.
Good luck.
I wanted to add to Nikki's resopnse for the diaper rash cream. I have always used my home made mixture (recommended by the pediatrician). I mix equal parts (usually a whole tube) of Original Desitin, and Aquaphor. Then, just to make it a bit creamy, I add a capful of malox. She already hit the nail on the head for the Aquaphor and Malox, but adding the Desitin also give you the Zinc Oxide which is a healing agent.
Hi A.,
I noticed all of the ladies had really good advise. I also wanted to add something about the diaper changes. My son just recently got over a terrible diarreah problem last month and his doctor told me not to use wipes when I changed him. She advised me to use a warm wash cloth during every diaper change while he had diarreah. She told me the wipes irritate the skin even worse. Good luck!
Does she drink any type of citrus juice? Even watered down it caused these same things with my daughter, the thing was, she'd drank 50/50 OJ and water for about three months prior to this happening so it took a little work to figure it out. After two or three days without OJ the problem was gone.
Sounds like you need to get copies of NATURALLY HEALTHY BABIES & CHILDREN by Romm and The ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NATURAL HEALTH & HEALING FOR CHILDREN by Weber
Hi A.. My daughter, who is 9 now, had really bad diaper rash when she was a baby. It was extremely raw, blistered, even to the point of bleeding sores. I cut juice out, but the best thing I used was AquaPhor. It is found in the hand lotion isle. It's sort of like vaseline. I used it and the next day, there was huge improvement. I have 3 daughters, 9, 6 and 4 and used it instead of any other diaper cream on every one of them. Also good for dry hands, chapped lips. Hope this helps.
Warm baths are also good for the rash area. Kinda like a sitz bath, it you had an episiotomy or a tear, you know how good that felt. Also, when using any of the diaper cremes, remember not to wipe it all of with every diaper change. Just wipe off the stool that is touching the skin, but if it is on top of the diaper creme, let it be. It looks bad, but is less iritating to the skin to let the creme sit on the skin instead of scrubbing it off. Then twice a day you can kinds sitz bath the area to get it really clean.
Good luck! and congrats on the new baby. Ihope all goes well with our pregnancy.

PS if the diarrhea goes on for days, watch the use of Gatorade. It is high in sugar, and more likely to keep the diarrhea going. Pedialyte or just water is best.
Both my kids had that at some point. They told me to get some Maalox and apply it to the blisters with a cotton ball before i put the diaper back on. Also, I gave them toast and clear non acidic liquids.
