Hi Moms,

My 1 year old has been adjusting to regular whole milk now and no formula .. All o a sudden, he has been having diarreha constantly and has a diaper rash that is basically eating away his skin .. everytime i change his diaper, he screams, because it hurts. i have put destin on, no cure, vasaline, no cure .. then my neighbor told me to keep it dry and he still cries. i have got Pedyalite medicine (Juice) so he doesnt get dehydrated and i have been giving him oatmeal and his regular feedings. Am i doing something wrong? we had the 24 hour Stomach flu and he has got over that and i am over it myself, but he still has diarreha. Any medications to help it stop and for the diaper rash? He has no fever, he is active, he's doing great. any advice?

Thank you & God Bless.

sounds a lot like an allergy. Maybe lactose intolerance. Try switching to soy milk or rice milk and see if that helps any.

Go to the pediatrician for the diaper rash. It can quicjkly escalate and be extremely painful. It could possibly be a yeast infection.

I just glanced at the other responses and it seems most people have missed the stomach bug. My son had a stomach bug just after his 1st birthday. The rest of us had it mild, but he had diarrhea for 3 weeks. I did end up taking him to the ER for it eventually, but they said this could happen after a stomach bug in small children. They told me to use the brat diet, no wipes on his bottom at all, as that makes the rash worse, and continue the pedialyte. I would cut out the oatmeal as that can aggravate diarrhea and maybe go lite on the milk too. Yogurt is a great way to help the bowel recover as well. I would not worry about dairy allergy unless you have this problem ongoing after he recovers from the bug which could take a month from what they told me in the ER last year.

For a bad diaper rash, I put on a layer of Desitin clear and then a layer of Boudreayx's Butt Paste and it always clears up very quickly. However, if it seems like maybe your little man has more than a diaper rash, you should check with the doctor.

As for the diarreha, you may want to try some bananas.

Good luck and hope he's feeling better soon!

Time to call the doctor. I think the rash needs to be looked at (could be yeast). Did you suddenly cut out the formula or did you transition to it? We did 75% breastmilk, 25% cow milk for 3-4 days, then 50-50 for 3-4 days, and then 25% breastmilk 75% cow milk for a couple of days. We had no problems, but going straight to milk on top of the stomach flu may have really upset his system.

If you don't do yogurt, I'd get him on the Yo baby quick for a couple of days. He probably needs the probiotics. But do call the doctor.

When my son has diarrhea I give him bananas. The doctor suggested it once and it really helped. I prefer that to using any medication. Just don't give him too many b/c then you might have the opposite problem and he will get constipated. As for the diaper rash, try Burts Bees Diaper Ointment. The stuff works miracles and is all natural. Usually it only takes 1 application to clear up even the worst diaper rash.

Best of luck to you and your little one!

I agree with Joanna - it's probably residual from the stomach bug. My pediatrician has told me that children can remain sensitive to dairy for up to a month after a stomach virus and has always encouraged us to back off the milk for a while and then slowly reintroduce it after the diarrhea has eased up. You may want to double check with your own doctor in case there are nutritional reasons that your son needs the milk now, but for us the doc always said it was OK to cut it out for a while. Pedialyte is good for keeping him hydrated, and while we normally water our juice down, for some reason "straight" undiluted juice seems easier on the tummies during an illness.

You may want to have the rash checked, but if it's just irritation from frequent changes due to the diarrhea, we've always found Aquaphor to be the best. We'd put a really thick layer on after each change. And I agree with cutting out the wipes for now. We used to keep a few baby wash cloths just for use on the bottom when it was raw like that and use plain water. We'd also blot gently to be sure the bottom was dry before putting on the Aquaphor.

Hope things clear up soon!

Take him to the pediatrician. He could have a yeast infection.

He probably has a yeast infection, not a diaper rash. Perhaps he has milk allergies as well, in any case, lower the juice and milk consumption for now.

My pediatrician has told me to stay away from Pedialyte and just use water instead.

Also, use the BRAT diet for helping a stomach that has diarrhea.
Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast... all help soothe the stomach. The toast should be dry or just a very small amount of butter

My first child had bad diaper rashes. Sometimes an aveeno bath seemed to help a bit, or a bath with some baking soda in the water (can't remember who, but another mom told me about that one). Did you try the original desitin? It's stickier and a pain, but it coats the skin and protects against moisture better than the new creamier formula. Also be sure his bottom is dry before using the desitin, otherwise you're just trapping the moisture in. If things don't improve in a couple days then maybe time to see your pediatrician. Sometimes the rashes are yeast and you need a special ointment to clear it up. Good luck.

First of all I would recommend Butt Paste for the diaper rash, it works wonders. I would then recomend talking to your doctor, but it sounds to me as though your son has a milk allergy and may need to continue the formula for longer or switch to soy milk. Good Luck!

The rash could be yeast. My 16 month old has had problems with horrible diaper rash since she was about 1 year old. Whenever it gets bad it's always yeast and it's loose bowel movements that cause it. Go to your pediatrician so they can perscribe an anti-fungal (or you can use Lotrimen which is over the counter, but I found the perscription worked better). It takes a long time to clear up even with the meds. Every time my daughter has a loose or really soft BM it always comes back and I begin treating it right away with the anti-fungal (Nystatin) and it goes away very quickly. I've also found that a bath with baking soda really helps it clear up quicker. I just dump in baking soda (don't measure it or anything) and just let her soak for a while. Good luck!

Diarrhea can last for about seven days after the stomach flu, not to mention~ it is very 'acidic' to the skin. And a baby's skin is very sensitive.

I'd just be putting on the Vaseline petroleum jelly and mix it with the Destin (especially at night.). DO NOT USE THE WIPES! Use watered down paper towels or rinse a container of wipes as the chemicals in the wipes can irritate the skin, too. Can't tell you how many times I did that for my son for any rash.

Depending upon when you had the stomach flu in the home, you could resort to the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast.). Dairy only increases and aggravates the bowels in the case of diarrhea, so you should avoid it. I always put my son on Soy milk in these times.

However, you should also check to make sure he does not have an allergy to lactose. This could be a possibility as well. I would contact his pediatrician.

For now, eliminate the juice (just do water), replace the oatmeal with rice cereal, and try some yogurt. These are all things to keep in your hip pocket when diarrhea hits - oatmeal and most juices have laxative properties, while bananas and rice do not. The yogurt will help his digestive system to replace any of the good bugs that were killed by the stomach flu - remember that his immune system is less advanced than yours, so it can take him much longer to get back to 100% ...

Sounds to me like he could be allergic to milk/dairy. Is around his anus really pink? that's a sign. My daughter got a rash, it stopped when I stopped the milk. I give her soy milk instead.

She had a bad diaper rash at one point and what worked was Canistan powder -- an anti fungal that kept her dry.

You could avoid oatmeal for a bit as it is pretty good at making them poop, and that's not what you want right now.

I also believe in acidophilis to regulate the bowel movements. You might want to check with a homeopath for the right dosage for his size.

I'd see the doctor about the severity of the rash. The diarrhea could be from the milk, or it could be left over from the flu. My son had it for 12 (miserable) days when the flu hit our house. His rash cleared within a day of the diarrhea ending. All we could do in the meantime was coat him with Desitin every single change. Good luck!

Hi S., For the rash call your local Giant Eagle Pharmacy and ask them to order you a tube of PINXAV (pronounced pink-sav) the upc # is 8 24155 01300 1 it is $4.99 for a 4 oz tube which will last you a long time. If they don't think they can order it (or have never heard of it) the Giant Eagle in North Versailles has ordered it for me and you do not need a percription for it. I started using PINXAV when my youngest got a diaper rash that A&D couldn't help and I turned to a friend that was a nurse at Akron Children's Hospital in Ohio. The hospital uses it and it is the most fantasic stuff. I have it now because I got it for a friend whose son had a bad rash and nothing seemed to work...not even stuff from the Doctor! As far as the diarreah, try backing off the milk a bit and adding some yogurt to your son's diet. If that doesn't work in a day or so make sure you call the doctor. Best wishes.

I think you should start with 1% milk and move on to whole milk gradually. It seems the diarrhea is an effect of milk. I would suggest washing his behind with luke water, and use petrolatum and try to get those fabric diapers but just for times like these . The cotton helps the area stay dry. Hope it helps. Good luck.
