My boys are 6 and 3 now, but for every gift giving occasion, they always get and LOVE: books, balls (small indoor or soccer, football, etc.), and matchbox cars. We also have a game called Cariboo (from the cranium game) that they and all their friends have LOVED!
Books! Never too late or early to start reading ;)
How about a family membership to the zoo...or a childrens discovery center...something that all of you can do together as a family?
My 3.5 and 1.5 year old grandsons LOVE their railroad sets...their parents have opted for Thomas The Train Wooden set...not the plastic ones. It will grow with them and there is a never ending variety of cars, tracks, and other things that you can add to it. I got them a train table here at our home so they have something special to play with when they come here...but they both have lots of Thomas at their homes.
