J.O.
My son just received his First Communion, and I knew he wouldn't be interested in receiving yet another rosary, crucifix, etc., (not that those aren't great gifts, he just has a few already,) so instead we asked those interested in giving a gift to make a donation to Food For The Poor, Inc., in honor of his special day. They gave the cash/checks to my son and he went through the gift catalog and chose specific gifts for the poor ($12 to feed a family for a month, $20 buys 100 lbs. of rice and beans or school supplies for a child for a year, $25 provides 20 chicks for eggs, $31 for clothes for an orphan, $36 feeds a child for a year, etc.) This worked out great, and it taught my son a valuable lesson about caring for others, esp. when you consider how little it costs to feed the poor compared with what we spend on just "stuff" here. He was really happy "shopping" through the gift catalog, picking out much-needed items for the less fortunate.
They will send you a free gift-giving catalog that includes all occasion cards that read, "A gift to Food For The Poor has been given in your honor." Or you can also go online, make a donation there, and print out a color gift page stating what gift has been given in their honor, which you can include in a card. http://www.foodforthepoor.org. This particular organization helps out families in the Caribbean and Latin America. Another great organization that is similar is Heifer International. http://www.heifer.org. A friend of mine made a donation towards baby chicks when my daughter was born, and I have to say that was the most meaningful gift we could have asked for.
Congratulations to your niece on her confirmation! She has a very thoughtful aunt. :0)
