I know you're not asking for this, but I vote your hubby go and have his done. You can give birth...he can get snipped:-)
We're having baby #5 in a few weeks and hubby is getting snipped.
I am expecting my third and final child at the end of Oct. I have signed the paper already to have my tubes tied and my Dr. never gave me any information on the procedure. I was just curious how soon after the birth do they do it? How is it done? What's recovery like? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I am planning on a regular vaginal delivery I hope to aviod a c-section if at all possible. Thanks for all advise.
Thank you so much for the information. I'm already feeling alot more confident about getting it done. The reason I'm getting my tubes tied instead of my husband getting snipped is my insurance will cover me getting done but my husbands won't cover his procedure. Stinks but that's life. Thanks again for all your helpful answers. I'm really grateful. :)

Talk to your Dr. about the procedure and possible side effects. The vasectomy option is much less evasive, risky and CHEAPER... can your husband do that???
Mine was done immediately after my vaginal delivery while I still had the epidural. I was told that if I didn't deliver too late in the day, I would have the tubal right after delivery. If it was late in the day, I'd have the surgery the next morning. I guess all hospitals are different. I delivered at 3:30 p.m. and had the surgery immediately after. The small incision in my naval was a bit sore, but nothing horrible. I had no recovery issues. My hormones after surgery are like they were when I wasn't on the pill. The pill seemed to "dull" my sex drive during ovulation and it did decrease PMS (cramps, etc.) Now I seem to be more "natural" hormonally. I really know when I'm ovulation and I know when my period is coming. Sorry if it is too much information. I thought you may want to hear about the differences from woman to woman. Good luck and congratulations on your third baby.
Just be prepared that if you have your tubes tied you may experience severe PMS symptoms. Contact a professional who deals with women's hormonal issues. Not all OB-GYN know alot about hormones.
And I have been told that doing it right after a birth can cause even more hormonal issues. Check it all out before you make a decision that you might regret.
If you have a C-section, it's completed as part of the surgery. If you have a normal vaginal delivery, sometimes the Dr will wait 12-24 hours and perform the surgery. If this is not possible or best for you to have it before you leave the hospital, you must wait 6-8 weeks for the uterus to shrink and the tubes to become visible via laproscopic surgery. Please talk to your Dr about when and how the tubal ligation will be done. Some Drs. believe it's best to wait 6 weeks because it's easier to visualize and access your tubes thus increasing the chances that they do it correctly and prevent further pregnancy. I have known of cases where 1 tube was cut and tied correctly while a ligament was cut and tied on the other side leaving the tube on that side open and functional. This leaves you at great risk for pregnancy. Pathology report after the procedure will let your Dr know if he cut/tied both tubes. Nurse Midwife Mom
I had mine done last year after my third child was born. I had a c-section so they did it minutes after she was born. I know that for the vaginal deliveries at my hospital they will do it the day after birth through laproscopic surgery. I have had no problems at all.
I had a tubal afer a vaginal delivery 13 years ago. I delivered at 5pm on friday and at 10 am on satuday they came to take me down to surgery. They gave me a spinal and did it laproscopically through my belly button. I was very sore satuday and part of sunday, but went home from the hospital with my baby on sunday afternoon. I resumed my regular activities, to my comfort level, on monday. My doctor removed just under an inch of tube then cauterized both ends on both sides.
My pms (and hormone levels) weren't affected in any way at all. It's the same as it's always been when I'm not on the pill ... which can be easy as pie one month and death for breathing the next LOL
I have been EXTREMELY happy with my tubal. I have absolutely NO NO NO NO NO desire to be pregnant again ... EVER.
if you have a c-section then they just do it right then and there, no extra recovery or anything. from what i understand if you have a vaginal birth then you have to wait at least 6 weeks after the birth and have the procedure done which is another roughly 6 weeks of recovery.
This is definitely something to discuss at your next checkup. Having some answers will help you be less anxious about all the "what if's."
I had a tubal ligation about 40 years ago. No complications, and no regrets! Hope yours is as smooth.
I had a C-section and mine was done immediately after. My sister had a vagina delivery and hers was done the following day (small belly button incision).
Just something to think about- I knew I was having a C-section (had an emergency w/my first), but my doc recommended if I opted for a vaginal delivery to strongly consider having my husband get a vasectomy. I went with the c-section and also my husband had a testicle removed b/c of testicular cancer, so i hated for him to bare the burden. Had I gone with the vaginal delivery, I would have made him have the snip-snip. Friends of mine say it was very easy.
Congrats and good luck!
Hi, I just had mine done at the same time as a C-section. My dr had said if it was vaginal she'd do it the next morning.
Congratulations on your new little one!
I had mine done less than 36hrs after giving birth vaginally. They would have done it the morning after he was born, but I opted to wait since he was born at almost midnight so I knew I'd be there one more night. Also, if you get an epidural, they can leave the epidural catheter in place and use it for the surgery. DS came too quick for me to get the epidural I wanted SO badly, so they gave me a spinal for the surgery instead. She went through the bottom of my belly button so you really can't see the scar unless your looking for it. The prep time took longer than the surgery, the surgery itself was under 15min I think. The recovery was pretty easy. I went home the same day it was done. I took percocet for the first couple days (you can take motrin too, I couldn't because I was going back on blood thinners for a clotting disorder), but after that I just took tylenol as needed. The area was fairly sore, but nothing major. The incision pain itself took longer to go away than the surgical pain, but it still wasn't horrible, just had to be careful I didn't pull the skin around it when moving certain ways and couldn't really put any pressure on it for a week or two. Mine was done 6mo ago and so far no issues. I'm still breastfeeding and haven't gotten my period back, so I can't say if they are any different yet. Oh, and my OB used clamps for the tubal - I don't know if it's just her or all the docs in the office, but she said there is less risk of bleeding with clamping so thats what they do. Good luck and congrats on the baby!
