Getting the Puke Smell Out of Bedding, Clothing, Jammies Etc.

Mamas & Papas-

DS is two and change. He puked last night, from an upset stomach. It was all over his bedding, jammies, crib tent, and rug. I washed everything twice in a cold wash (didn't want the woolen bedding to shrink). Nonetheless, there is an acrid smell to it.

Any tips or suggestions?
As for logistics, we live in an apartment building with a communal coin laundry room. So while I stripped down the bedding last night, it couldn't go in the machine at 2am.

Thanks,
F. B.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your tips. I did use vinegar, but it didn't do the trick. I totally forgot about oxi clean. I'll use some for the next few wash cycles and hopefully everything will come clean.

Best to all,
F. B.

you probably already have this but baking soda to neutralize the acid will probably be a start. You'll have to do a rinse load, then a wash load.

Rinse load with baking soda instead of soap , then add soap at the beginning of the rinse cycle.

then take it out, and if it still needs work, repeat. You shouldn't have to, but then everyone's different.

then run it through a regular load with other stuff normal soap etc. Or keep it by itself.

Good call washing it cold water.

Try a vinegar wash. Use 1 cup white distilled vinegar instead of laundry detergent. Gets out mildew smell also and it also freshens the machine itself.

Sorry your little one is sick. I had the same thing happen Sunday night with my son.

Go to a Laundromat to get it done in one of their industrial washers - has ALWAYS been my "go to" when things get crazy, last night sounds crazy. Bring your detergent and either a cup of vinegar OR 2tbsp of baking soda - not both and add to the wash. Cut your detergent in half for the vinegar and 3/4 of what you would use for the baking soda. I am sure you can get it out with those tips.

Nature's Miracle for things that can't be washed (mattress, etc.). You may need to pour, not just spray.

I have found that Oxi-Clean works well with the smell of vomit and poop.

Good Luck.

I haven't yet met a smell that hasn't been banished by Tide.
If the bedding is too large to wash properly in your coin op machines, you might have to find a large loader at a laundromat.

I start the washer, add the detergent, splash some bleach in(about 1/2-1/3 cup), then let it fill up. I add the clothes when it's about to start agitating. Once you add the garments you are sanitizing at the same time you are washing them.

I do this with each and every load I wash. I add a bit more bleach for lighter colors and a bit less for black, dark brown, and navy stuff but I do add bleach this way in every load. Before the clothes ever go in, right at first.

If you can, use a front-loading washer. 1T of Borax, 1T of Arm and hammer washing soda, and 1T Oxy clean in the detergent dispenser. Put 1/2 cup of white vinegar into the fabric softener dispenser.

Best of luck!

dump about a half cup of shout in also it will help. also it might help to wash it and let it air dry and spray it really good with some fabreeze type stuff. but sometimes you just have to pitch it and start over. My grandson puked on our couch. after multiple cleanings we ended up putting it on the curb. just could not get the smell out. good luck
