Baking Soda to Get Rid of Musky Smell in Towels?

I have heard of the benefits of using baking soda to get rid of that musky smells that towels sometimes get and I wanted to give it a shot.

But, not sure how you actually do it… where do you put the baking soda? Directly in with the towels? Do you use detergent along with it? Or only the baking soda? And how much do you use?

Any instruction from those that have actually done it would be appreciated.

TIA!

Vinegar is what I use....does the trick every time. I put in about 1 cup per load. You won't smell the vinegar after the wash is done...just fresh towels.

We use vinegar to get out gym smells. Add about a cup or so right to the wash cycle.

Just sprinkle the backing soda where you put your regular laundry detergent. It is the same as using a dry powder detergent and/or oxyclean.

Also try vinegar it works wonders!

Baking soda at the wash cycle helped me but I found about a cup of vinegar did a better job. I just add it at the time I add the soap.
My husband washed towels last week and of course he had no clue about adding the vinegar. My towels smell funny. blah.

i have heard that some add the vinegar at the rinse cycle but I don't have time to run to the washer to do that.

First, I would air the towels out in the sun for a day. then, you can put the baking soda right in the washing machine along with the detergent.

Cold water, 1/4 cup of baking soda (more if you think it's really bad), regular detergent, 1/2 cup - 1cup of white vinegar. Wash like normal, dry like normal.

I would get that smell when I left the laundry in the washer too long (more than 8 hours). Sometimes if I forget I left a load overnight, I rewash with a splash of vinegar. Problem solved!

You can buy 2 gallon jugs vinegar at Sam's club for about $3.75 or about $2 a gallon at the grocer. You can buy larger boxes of baking soda in the laundry aisle. Super cheap way to freshen and soften laundry!

When I've done this, I do a cold rinse with nothing (by nothing, I mean just the towels and water), a hot rinse with detergent and baking soda, and an additional cold rinse. It works for me!!

I move the towels out of the way a bit and dump the detergent and soda in the bottom, let a little water fill, and push the towels back. It helps the baking soda dissolve a bit first.

baking soda in the wash cycle with detergent (and non-chlorine bleach or oxiclean, if you use it).
vinegar in the rinse cycle. you get the vinegar in the rinse cycle by putting it where softener goes.

if they really need a little help, hang them outside on the line and spray w/vinegar (I use 2/3 vinegar and 1/3 water). let them sit all day or even overnight. I had a stinky dishrag (you know that smell.....) somehow contaminate an entire load - I was able to fold and put away, no rewash, after the vinegar on the line.
