Getting Rid of Used Mattress W/out Buying a New One....

Hi there! Does anyone know how to get rid of a used mattress (King)? We're getting rid of the bed and therefore are not replacing the mattress . If you buy a new one they take the old one, but I have read that a mattress is now considered Bio-Waste - hence not being able to just throw them away.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

ETA- It looks clean but after 2 babies, pumping, heavy heavy periods, etc. it kind of grosses me out so I couldn't in good conscience donate it (if that's even allowed for a used mattress) !

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THANK YOU!! Waste Mgt. will pick it up for $60 plus fees or there is a waste disposal area 2 towns over that will take it for $24.00. I'll also call the local good will to see if they want it. Thank you for all of your suggestions.

Freecycle.org!!!!! Someone will be able to do something with it and you'll keep it out of the landfills!

Freecycle! Just be honest about the condition and if someone chooses to take it, that's great, it stays out of the landfill. We got rid of one that way and the person who took it was thrilled.

I'm sorry, but this is making me giggle...you are suggesting you can't throw it away or donate it, so are you looking for a creative way to make it disappear? ;) I'm just teasing, but I'm having fun thinking of ways you could do it...how big is your fire pit?

Honestly, I would donate it. People who accept a used mattress know what they are getting into...I wouldn't worry about conscience unless you've have bed bugs. People leak. People bleed. People shed skin. It's gross, I know. ;)

Women's Sheters take them in our area.

I would still call Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc and just ask if they take it.

From your ETA.... sounds like you have a plan.

One of the big mattress stores here, takes used mattresses (that aren't gross or soiled) for domestic violence shelters. I would contact mattress stores and domestic violence, family, homeless, and children's shelters in your area.

Try calling your trash company. We scheduled our mattress to be picked up and paid them $30 to haul it away. Debated whether it would be worth it, but it definitely was. Good luck.

google "solid waste disposal" and your city.

You'll likely pay a small fee ($20ish) and they'll have set dates per year (4+) that you can set out large items and they'll pick it up curbside.

Is it basically clean? No urine or blood stains? I would contact the Salvation Army or other charity, they may pick it up and give it to a family who really needs a decent mattress.

If you are planning to toss it because it is old and worn out contact your City Hall or Alderman/Councilman and ask where it can be disposed of.

Freecycle. My MIL bought a bed for our dd off of craigslist, but we already had a mattress so we didn't need theirs, we just wanted the frame. We gave it away on freecycle, even though we didn't think it was in the best condition. You never know, someone might really need it and be willing to clean it. Just be honest about how old it is and what kind of home it's from.

Some thrift stores will take it and have it sanitized then resell it. It can't hurt to call a few of them. I do understand how hard it is to get rid of them.

Two options:
Donate or sell (Goodwill, Freecycle, Craigslist) if it is in good condition.

Or take it to the dump if you can transport it or borrow a van/pickup. Yes, they will charge you for it, but in my experience it is much less expensive to bring it to the dump yourself than having a trash removal service come by to pick it up.

BTW, each municipality has their own rules for what they accept for the dump. Don't trust what you may have read at one point or another - do call your local waste management company and ask them to be sure. Here old mattresses are just treated as trash - so they go to the landfill.

Good luck.

MPLS actually has a place in South Minneapolis that you can haul it to for free. They just ask for your ID to verify your residence. We hauled several items of furniture for my MIL. It's a nice service.

Also, once a year MPLS usually allows you to put it out in the alley / street and they will pick and and dispose.

Depends on where you live. You can take them to the landfill where I live, and at my mom's house, the regular garbage company will pick them up. Call your garbage company and ask if they'll take it.
