Getting a 2 Year Old to Wipe His Nose and Not Lick When His Nose Runs

How do I break the habit that is starting with my two year old? His nose has been running recently and I catch him licking his lips while he is playing.

I'd like to get him to start wiping his nose, which he does a decent job when I get him a tissue (I usually have to finish up the job).

The doctor said break the habit as soon as possible or he will have chapped lips, chin, etc for years if a true habit forms.

Would you get him his own tissue box? Do they make tissues boxes with trucks or cars on them so it can be his special box?

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

What can I do next?

it's not unusual for children to do this. gently give him hygienic options, but don't make a huge deal about it. just correct it briefly and calmly when you see it happening.
i really don't think he's going to develop years' worth of chapped lips from a typical childhood cold. i'm annoyed with your doctor's fearmongering.

Does he have allergies? Treating those might help.

Just keep wiping his nose. Also, blow your nose in front of him so he sees what those tissues are for.

You just have to do repetition.

He is 2, his memory is still not that great for the boring stuff. Keep tissues in your pockets, handbag, in each room, so you can grab them. Hand him a tissue and you do the big wipe.. then let him have a go at wiping.. then you finish him up. He will learn..

Tissue boxes are fine, but be prepared to sometimes have all of the tissue out of the box.. I personally did not care.. every once in a while.. I made our daughter stuff them all back in if she pulled them all out. Just part of thier exploring at some point..

I do not think it matters if the box is Boyish, do you?

But you can always do a project where he decorates it before you open it.. Or you could glue on firetrucks.. or whatever on there yourself..

Hang in there. He will get it, when you and your husband constantly are wiping his nose.

You could also get him a hankie to keep in his pocket maybe. Get a colorful bandanna that he could shove in his pocket or leave near him while playing. That might be more enticing than a plain old tissue! ;) Either way, just keep telling him over and over again. It's normal kid behavior to do this, it doesn't stop all that easily! My 4 year old still picks her nose and wipes her nose on her sleeve sometimes...and so does my husband...so it's a life long issue!

For his own "designer" tissue box buy some of the self stick foam pieces in something he likes. Then by a plain color box of tissues and let him decorate it himself. He now had fun fixing up his own box and it might be just enough to help him remember to use them.
