My son is 10 1/2 months and he has been keeping us up the last 3 nights with gas pain. He kinda of screams not cries. I rub his belly I even tried his back, I pump his legs, and I even try to put him on his belly hoping maybe that will help pass the bubble. He is like a wild man all over my bed I feel terrible for the amount of pain he is in. He has no gas during the day though. I am still breastfeeding and I eat the same things and it doesn't matter. He is getting teeth. Could that be it? IB Profen gives him gas so I gove him Tylenol could that cause it? What can I do? I need to say that not one brand of infant gas relief drops have worked for him so please don't suggest Mylicon. Gripe water did not work either. I am soo tired. He wakes up happy right now his is laughing in his highchair as he drops his cereal bar on the floor so I don't think he is sick. I am going to call his Dr on Tuesday but any advice for me till then would be great. I have 2 older children and they never had any issues like this so I really don't know what to do. Thnaks

What can I do next?

Colic tabs by Hyland's, or Chamomilla, might be worth a try. They worked for my daughter. Also Colic Calm is really good, if that's what's going on. Even beyond the colic age, the colic tabs seem to help.

are you sure it is gas? what i mean is are you sure it is gas (ie. he farts and is ok) or could it be collic or something else?

For about 5mos straight (every single night) when my oldest DD was 3-8mos, I had this very problem---she would screem from gas, but only at night. It seemed to start and stop sudenly. :(

You can try what I did:
Lay him on your knees face down w/his head/chest on one knee and lower part of tummy on other.
Then as you support him w/your hands, bounc him for 15-30 minutes (or however long it takes).
The key is to keep doing this untill he is happy again or asleep...but it will be hard because it will prop. take a while and you'll feel like trying something else...but that just makes you have to start over.
He might go take on a patter of crying..ie fuss, scream, settle down, scream, cry, settle-down, on and on...but if you get tempted to put him down the 1st time he settles-down...don't do it...but wait untill his breathing is normal and steady for at least 10 minutes...
Then put him on his tummy where you can watch him for a little bit if you think rolling him over will wake him/upset him (depending on if he falls asleep or not.

Hope that helps. :)

I also think it might be something else... ear infection, teething, growing pains, etc. BUT if you really think it is gas, you can try an abdominal massage before putting him to bed. Lay him on his back facing you without a diaper on (I usually lay my DD on top of her diaper, just in case) Stroke from the belly button down using hand over hand movements. Then start from your left (his right) side and rub small clockwise circles with the heel of your hand working your way to the right. Try to concentrate on the area under his belly button. You can always do the 'I Love You' stroke too... trace an 'I' on his right side, an 'L' in the center, and a 'U' on his left. I do this for my DD when she is constipated or gassy, and I almost always get a couple fo farts out of her when I do it. :P

ETA Denise's answer reminded me... My DD gets horrible gas when I eat too much dairy... I can eat some, like cheese and milk on my cereal, but when I eat a lot I can definitely see the difference in her gassiness. (The peppermint water thing works good too...)

Even though you haven't changed your diet that could still be it. Something that didn't cause gas before can cause gas now. Gas is caused by what or how we put food/drinks in our system. How does he feed before he goes to bed? Is feeding fast or slow. It could possibly be the rate of intake.

You didn't mention if he is drawing up his legs and getting into a ball - that is a sign of gas.

Could it be growing pains? My kids only hurt from growing pains at night time.

You never know if it could be teething, but a lot of slobbering a has to accompany teething though. My kids had a fever and diarrhea every time they were teething. Of course, the doctor said that was just an old wives tale - they were wrong.

You can call the doctor but they will tell you give him gas relief drops(even though you already have and to watch his diet). They don't have much sympathy for gassy babies - they have bigger things to deal with. Especially since it has only been 3 nights.

Tylenol & Motrin don't help with gas.

Try giving him pepperment water. Drop one pepperment into a bottle or sippy cup filled with water. Let it sit for a bit and then shake it around so you get more of the pepperment dissolving. Once it has dissolved some give that to your child. It doesn't have to be a lot either. It will help with tummy and gas problems. That is what my midwife told me and it works every time. Good luck!!!

Okay this may not be your thing, and that is fine, but my 2 month old is crazy gassy, has been since day 1. He's breast fed as well and I went on a total elimination diet and it didn't help, we tried the drops and all the normal stuff as well with no luck. However, my chiropractor has a little guy a week younger and she does regular adjustments on her son, I myself have been seeing her for about 2 years now, so I trust her completely, I took my son in and it made all the difference in the world. He started sleeping better, has fewer cases of the hiccups (which he used to get once or twice an hour every day all day), has less gas, and passes what he does have very easily. Now I know that it's not something everyone is comfortable doing, but it could be worth a shot. The first few times my little guy went he was miserable and screaming with his little legs and fists all tense and his face all red, before she was even done he farted a dozen times and you could watch his whole body relax. And he has never cried when he was adjusted, so i know it doesn't cause him pain, but rather eliminates it.

if its gas and he is breastfed the 2 choices you havent named yet is warm peppermint water. get some peppermint candy and put it in warm water to dissolve it and give it to the baby. if you were using formula I would suggest soy formula. since he is not formula fed and is not doing this all of the time I am going to say keep a diary of what you are eating something you are eating may be causing it. if you are table feeding him it may be something you are feeding him ex cheese or oatmeal cereal. it also could be his teeth but he should have several signs there. also when you call the doc if you get him checked get his ears checked. if he will still let you swaddle him. mine wouldnt let me at that age. but its worth a try. put him on the washer in a car seat. anything that vibrates helps with colic or gas. if you have a vibrating swing and he still fits it use that instead. I hate it when the younger get what the older never had and you cant figure it out. been there feel for you good luck

I had a similiar issue with my girls. Try taking an acidophilus supplement. I took the refrigerated pills that you get from the health food store. It worked an absolute miracle on their gas pains.

Good Luck
