Okay, so I had my gallbladder removed at the end of April, and I was wondering if anybody that has had this done had any long lasting symptoms. I have had a couple, but I won't get into that, but I just wanted to know if it normal. Thanks

been there done that and the problem I had was bowel problems with some foods. this seems to be a common problem as one of the gallbladder is to remove some of the fats in the diet.

I had mine out in 2000. I felt much better but I have problems with fatty and dairy foods. So, when I eat properly, I feel wonderful! But there are times that I don't and I need to be close to the bathroom. There are meds you can take that with bind everything in there but I decided to change my diet and that has helped. Good luck.

It probably is.....

My girlfriend had this procedure done a few years ago - I believe she was 35/37. She had lots of issues - still does time to time; loose bowel movements, stomach cramps, etc.

They have subsided over time and lessened when she improved her diet.

Talk to your doctor or do research via the internet for some options, meds, homeopathic remedies.

Dear R. -
I responded privately, then read other responses; thus my personal share follows for those who continue to have 'bathroom concerns' IBS and other emergencies:

See a Board Certified Naturopath - Nutritionist: Ask for bile replacement supplement. Depending on your condition other supplements may be required to restore your digestion health. Putting up with or ignoring will only prolong your suffering and quality of life-style will wane. Your body requires bile to process fat and that includes signaling your body to burn fat. Unprocessed fat is causing havoc in your intestines - and it will lead to various other upsets. In the responses I noticed a trend of sensitivity to Fats and Dairy - Dairy is high in fat. I do fine with fat free items. Get in touch with eating for your blood type - this science will serve you all to experiencing better well-being. I discovered that I am allergic to Gluten - take a look at removing all grains except rice from your diet! - Amazing results for me. No more explosions. ;)

There are many well qualified Naturopath - find one - Their rates are reasonable and the supplements - almost free in comparison to OTC and prescription formulas.
Most serve all ages and love to get infants and small children off to very healthy life styles....smallest itch or sniffle - addressed and everyone is happier! My favorite is Jamey Summerfield - Whole Health Associates - Houston, TX. She is Multi-Certified and a very straight forward practioner and biochemical analyst. You want well-being - follow her advice! In three months I feel good and have no emergencies for the first time in 5 years and several post surgery doctors.

If you have a gall bladder - keep it healthy by eating raw apples. Word is that apples will heal your sick bladder. Interesting note: I am allergic to raw apples. Worth leaning more about if you still have yours!

That's all - and I don't think that I have misquoted any of the information that I have learned and just I ask you to check it out for yourself.

Best wishes for all to be more healthy.

I had it done in 1991. There were some issues with it, diarrhea mainly. Changing your eating habits help. After all these years, I am now able to eat anything without any major issues. I eat a fairly healthy diet and almost never any fatty foods. I had to eat smaller meals every two hours on a regular basis and that worked out well
. You have bile running through your system all the time and you have to just get used to it by taking care of it. Little meals each day took care of it for me.

You have to change your diet totally to experience the best possible results. So, if you eat a healthy BALANCED diet, your side effects should chill.

IBS is no fun!!

I didn't have any issues at all after my gallbladder was removed. Just RELIEF!!! However, my aunt did. She was unable to tolerate fatty foods at all and had to watch what she ate for the rest of her life. I hope you're not in that category!

I had mine out in 2003 and couldn't be happier. I was down to eating grilled chicken and a few french fries without inducing an attack. 3 days after I had steak & lobster for my birthday. And, the eating has never stopped. I gained weight, a lot, not because I didn't have a gall bladder, but because I could eat again and I love food!

Today, I have to be careful about letting myself get "too hungry". Without a gall bladder to store the gall until eating and digestion begins, the gall just flows continually. If I let my stomach get too empty, the build up of gall in my stomach and intestines will make me nauseous and have diarrhea.

I do have to be careful about some foods giving me diarrhea. Fried chicken sometimes doesn't do so well, for example.

But, all of this far outweights the pain, nausea, throwing up, gas, constipation, etc. of life with my gall stones.

Even though I had my gallbladder out 8 years ago, I still have pseudogallbladder attacks if I eat nuts, popcorn, chocolate or foods with a lot of butter. These episodes are very unpleaseant so I have to avoid eating those foods.
Otherwise, I was fine and did not notice any issues.

Hi R.,

I had my gall bladder removed 5+ years ago and still have to watch what I eat. At least for the first 2-3 months make sure you stay away from all deep fried fatty food. One of the biggest culprits is ice cream aswell.

The side effects have become more bearable as time has worn on and I have realized what foods I need to stay away from. Also taking a probiotic supplement every day helps with the gassy side effects.

Hope this helps

I have not had my gallbladder out, but I did have multiple stones, excrutiating gallbladder attacks, and was told to have my gallbladder out. I asked around just like you are, and most people who had had their gallbladder out admitted to experiencing cronic loose and/or irritable bowel, indigestion and weight gain after surgery. Nothing as miserable as a gallbladder attack, but just mild to moderate annoyances that tend to last. They all agreed that it was worth it never to have gallbladder pain again, and that you get used to it. I'm not sure what you're experiencing, but if it's something along those lines, it's probably normal. I ended up using an alternative method to get rid of my gallstones, so I don't have personal post-op experience. But I thought it might help to hear what people told me.

I had mine removed I guess 3 years ago and still have the same symptoms that I had before. I did not have gallstones but did have sludge, and my gallbladder only functioned at 12 percent. My doctor told me there was a very slim chance that having it removed would help me, but I wanted to take the chance anyway.

I hope you have better results than I did!

I had my gall bladder removed in November of 2002. I still have to be somewhat careful of what I eat. Otherwise, I find myself rushing for the restroom. Mostly, I've found that highly spicy foods and highly greasy foods are the ones that get me, especially my beloved hot-n-sour soup.

After my gall bladder removal I was told that high fat content will cause certain "issues" (loose stool or worse). Pizza is my one of the worst offenders, as is any type of chocolate (fat content) and other items.
