Fuzzi Bunz

HI,
I'm looking for help and advice from fuzzi bunz experts.

My husband and I recently transitioned to one-size fuzzi bunz for our ten month old son. Our friend had great success with her daughter. Our son, however, doesn't seem to be experiencing the same. He leaks after a long nap even with two fleece inserts- sometimes even during the day if I don't change him after an hour. During the night, I use a disposable AND a one insert fuzzi bunz. He sometimes still leaks!

Ok, is it because he's a male and his urine is more localized? We're at wits end. The poor kid gets woken up in the wee hours of the morning because he's wet and cold! I'm thinking that these diapers just aren't made for our little guy.

We do own a few hemp inserts (they are SO wide!) but because his diaper is so tight fitting now because he's so skinny, it does not fit into the diaper yet. And the trifold was way too bulky for his little body.

Has anyone else experienced this with their child? Please offer any advice or suggestions OR just confirm that we need to transition back to disposables.

Thanks!
AD

I don't use these kinds of diapers but what I learned quickly with my son is to point his unit down. If it's off to the side or pointed up - no matter what he's wearing will leak. Good luck!

I am embarrased to say that, although semi-environmentally concience and striving to teach my son to be thoroughly so, I have never used anything other than disposables...ouch, I know.
HOWEVER...I know a couple of Mama's in northern California who used and LOVED G-Diapers. Sounds like it may be along the same lines as fuzzibunz (it is a biodegradable insert for a washable diaper cover, much like women's maxi pads, from what I understand). Check it out, it might be the solution for an environmentally concience mama such as yourself.

I never use a pocket diaper at night. I use a prefold, with a hemp doubler and a cover. Even then I do occasionally have to change him during the night. I don't think a disposable would be any better though. At that age I didn't have to add a doubler, just a prefold would have done it. My LO is 2 now, so needs more. For during the day...how long have you been using your diapers? They may need to be stripped if you have hard water. You can tell if you put a few drops of water inside and they just bead up and stay there that you need to strip them. There are many ways to do that. what worked for me with hard water was a product called RLR. Otherwise it may just be a fit issue and you may want to try a different brand of diapers. Cloth does need to be changed more often than disposables, but they should last more than an hour! feel free to PM me if I can help any more.

My first question is where is he leaking? If the insert is so soaked that it leaks when compressed, he is just a heavy wetter and you could try different kind of inserts. I always found that a combination of prefold and microfiber insert worked best.

If he is leaking out of the leg gusset or the opening and the insert seems not soaked yet, you might have repelling issues. This happens when there is some sort of buildup (usually detergent) on the fleece, and make the diaper repellent instead of absorbant. In this case you should strip your diapers.
Good luck!

We just started using the fuzzi bunz 1 size also a few weeks ago. I love the diaper, the fit, the colors, my son does leak after a nap ( heavy wetter). We have had success with the bum genius 1 size diapers at night time. He is 17 months old and we have used them since the day he was born. We double them up, and he very very rarely leaks from them. How are you washing them? Do they perhaps need to be stripped?

Fuzzi Bunz dont' fit my little budda belly baby lol but i have had success cd'ing at night. I bought very slim hemp liners from greenmountaindiapers.com and they are fantastic. I use 2 at night along with the Bum Genius one size pocket and the insert that came with it. Sounds like he's a heavy wetter so you might try the FB insert with 3 slim hemp liners.

You might also just try a different brand for him at night. When my son was day trained but still wet at night I used Thristies brand. Now they offer an adjustable fit diaper and it has a pocket. My son was 3-4 years old and wet pretty good at night and the Thristies worked well and they are reasonably priced. You would only need a few (depending on how often you wash) to use at nap and night.

Try prefolds with covers. You can double up at night - one hemp and one cotton. The hemp holds a ton of liquid. I thought we were the only ones that fuzzi bunz did not work for..always heard rave reviews but we did not have any luck with them either. No need to switch to disposables. Prefolds and covers take maybe 5 extra seconds of effort during changing time and are very affordable to your wallet and planet. Also, my son does not leak with them..but he will leak in the rare disposable.

We use both bum genius and happy heiney diapers. I have no specific advice here, b/c I came to peace early on with disposables for sleep times. Sleep is precious in our home and I just found that cloth diapering at sleep times were an invitation for a wet diaper to disturb the process. This might not be popular feedback, but for me it was my limit. We do the best we can, but no reason to go crazy over it. Cloth diapers are fantastic during the day and as my boy got bigger, I realized he needs to be changed much more frequently. 2 hours is often pushing it. So, we go cloth as much as we can, but no reason to be all or nothing or feel guilty for doing a combination.
Hooray for those who have managed methods that work for them, but I am encouraging you to find your balance and go with that.

About two years ago I had the same problem with fleece. I think those inserts just aren't absorbant. I had much better luck with Thirsties Microterry inserts. I bought my stuff at wildflowerdiapers.com & they have tons of different insert options. Try a couple different kinds of more of a terrycloth fabroc before throwing in the towel!

I own a company that sells handmade cloth AIO OS diapers (Tot Wrap Dream Diaper, Air Biscuit, Cushy Toosh, Starbunz, etc). I have gone through more than I can count to find the one's that won't leak and the ones that stood out are all I sell.

My company is My Mamma's Milk (http://www.mymammasmilk.com)

I have been approached by Fuzzi Bunz and Bumkins and tried both - didn't like either. Compared to the handmade ones, the quality is cheap. I never get velcro either - they curl in the wash. The only company that wasn't handmade that I carried was Haute Pockets - brilliant diaper, but they sold out to an Australian company and I cannot get them anymore.

Is it possible that you need to strip the diapers? If they build up detergent they will leak eventually. Email me and I can tell you how to strip them.

I have a son and also found that the fuzzibunz leaked. I use bumgenius (both one size and AIO) with much better luck. That said I do put him down overnight in sposies and usually for naps as well. It's just less trouble than changing the sheets. He is also a tall skinny kid and I like the BG because the velco allows for SUCH a custom fit. Although I have now run into issues with the velco (or the anchor tabs you use when washing) wearing out from repeated washing. I'd recommend buying just one or two diapers in different brands until you find the ones that work best for your kid.

It isn't a boy thing. I used sposies at night with my daughter starting at 10 months. I tried a bunch of different brands, a few different inserts, etc. and just gave up. They are just producing a lot more pee!

I'm no expert, sorry. However my SIL went through this with her little guy. She ended up using the super absorbant disposables at night. She also ended up stripping the diapers and said that made a difference during the day (not sure if she went back to them at night). I've heard from some moms that sometimes that happens, that until they're legs fatten up a little more, the CD's don't quite fit right. Maybe there's a great trick out there from a CD expert!!! Good luck! :)

I have to use Happy Heineys with my son and have had to use Bum Genius for my daughter. If I reverse my son can use the bum genius but my daughter leaks in Happy Heineys. It sounds like you might need to use the super expensive made for night time diapers for nights and maybe try a different type of cloth for the day. Go Baby Go has a great website and have independent consultants as well. You might be able to try out some different types without having to spend too much money.

We have Fuzzi Bunz as well, but I have a girl. I do find that they leak if I keep them on for more than 3 hours (one insert). My favorite for overnight is Thirsties Duo Diaper (double inserts) or Fab Fitted with a Thirsties Cover. NEVER leaks, EVER, period!
