My friend just found out yesterday that she is pregnant, she thinks she is about 2 mo. along, but were not too sure yet. She has been getting sick every 30 mins about. When she does throw up nothing comes out just spit, but at the sight or smell of anything she has to run to the bathroom. I personally never had morning sickness so I don't know what to tell her. Can anybody help? Thank you :)

My heart goes out to her. My son was a piece of cake but my daughter....I didn't know if I would make it. I stayed sick for the first 5 months. There were many days I just cried because I didn't think I could ever be that sick. Ask the doctor because I think there is something she can take for it. It just never worked for me.

Hi N.,
This is something I know a lot about. I had the same thing happen to me about 3 weeks into my pregnancy. A lot of people thought I was exaggerating or letting "mind over matter" creep in. Everyone said "wait 12 weeks". It wasn't your standard morning sickness. In fact, I was getting sick 20/30 times a day to an alarming level. I ended up in the hospital right away for dehydration - losing 14lbs immediately. Thankfully my doctor was really knowledgeable and knew immediately what was happening. I had a condition called Hyperemesis. It happens in about 1% of pregnancies I think. She should talk to her doctor immediately, because if she does have it, she could be dehydrating herself and the baby. There was nothing I could change in my eating habits to help. Just breathing made it worse. The only thing that made it slightly better was sleep. It felt like I had the stomach flu 24/7 or that I was really drunk and at that "puke" threshold every couple minutes. I couldn't explain it to anyone. She tried me on a few medications that were approved for use during pregnancy. We finally settled on ZOFRAN, what I call my miracle drug. I took it 4x a day for almost all 9 months. It was a life saver. Within a few days from the Zofran working, I had that "pregnancy appetite" back. I have spoken to a few other moms that had the same thing - they all ended up on Zofran. They also all had girls. ;). Here is a website on hyperemesis for your girlfriend to look at and ask her doctor about: http://www.hyperemesis.org/ She will also get a lot of needed support there. My doctor always said "that baby is rooted in there, the sicker you are!!" So that was always a nice thought. The important thing is staying hydrated. That can harm both you and the baby if it isn't attended to. I really feel for her. Please send her my prayers. I know how hard it is.
Take care,
L.

My heart goes out to your friend. Many people do not understand how hard it is to have morning sickness. With my first child I had it for almost 8 months. My doc suggested the vitamin B6 with half a unisom. It helped somewhat, it just made me sleepy. I am actually about 5 months pregnant now with our second and have been having a hard time again with all day sickness. I told my doc I needed something that would not make me sleepy. (pregnancy makes you tired enough) He said there was a new kind of Zofran that melts in your mouth so you don't have to worry about throwing it up. It has been a lifesaver. It's Zofran ODT 8MG. The only drawback I've found is that it causes constipation. I've never experienced that before so that has been a challenge.
Also, as others suggested, not letting your stomach get to hungry helps as well as anything with ginger. Hope this helps and tell her to hang in there and be sure to stsy well hydrated.

Thru the three pregnancies i've been thru something different worked each time. With the 1st it was eating crackers and drinking pepsi before i even got out of bed in the morning. With the second they had to prescribe me phenergan. With the third I got those motion sickness bands and my dr suggested taking vitamin b6 twice a day and with the second dose take half a unisom. Of course nothing cured it completly but it all helped. Ginger ale was also my friend. I've heard the pregnancy pops were good I've just never used them. She's just gotta try different things till she finds one that works. If she can get a prescription for phenergan or something like that i would do that 1st. Good luck:)

My name is R. and I have a 2yr old son and am 5 months pregnant. With my first son my all day sickness was more motion sickness than anything. I bought Seabands from the pharmacy. They are just bracelets with pressure points. Those worked really well except this time. My doctor didn't want to give me any meds because I wasn't actually "throwing up" I was doing the same thing your friend is. The pharmacist told me to eat crushed ice (great from Zaxby's or Sonic, which you can get by the bag) and to SIP on gingerale all day. IT WORKED!! Good luck!! feel free to email me anytime ____@____.com

There is a great homeopathic tablet you can take- taste a little sweet and melts under your tounge- very small. It is called Nux Vomica and is awesome!! Also anythingwith ginger in it- gingertrips, ginger ale, that will help calm a tummy. It is very difficult to go through this- I too have never had major morning sickness but as a doula have seen a lot! Remind her to still keep eating and drinking and to stick with what works.
Also if she is on any vitamins or a cheap prenatal vitamin it could be upsetting her tummy. I recommend rainbow light complete prenatal system. It is a bit expensive but a really good prenantal can mean the difference between sick and dying and on the mend!

Hi N., I went through the same thing your friend is going through. I couldn't stand the smell of anything and literally everything made me through up.... I lost 10 lbs in 3 weeks. I went to see my doctor and they put me on anti nausea/vomiting meds and that helped a little. I smell problem unfortunately doesn't go away until it's time is up which is different for everyone. I personally started felling much better at the middle or end of the forth month of my pregnancy. A few things that might help are ginger a little added to foods or she could get organic ginger ale at kroger or some other store. Eating saltine crackers before she gets out of bed each morning. Not leaving her stomach empty for too long as that agrivates the condition and will cause nausea and vomiting.

Hope this helps.

M.

I had morning sickness also, especially when I would brush my teeth! My doctor prescribed me some nasuea medicine and it worked great. I also tried those preggo lolly pops. I personally didnt like all of the flavors but they worked.I was also told to eat something lite right before bed, thats works good to. But as a precaution of dehydration among other things I hope she see's a OBGYN soon.

I had two saltine crackers even before I sat up in bed in the morning. They always helped settle my stomach.

Hi N.,
What I can suggest is this, try saltines and ginger ale. Keep literal packages by the bed and eat some before she even sits up, this will help a little, first thing in the morning. Tell her to try to stay away from milk or orange juice first thing too. Milk just is icky to bring back up and o.j. is a little too acidy. Stick with bland foods at first, and maybe chicken noodle soup. They have things called sea bands, that you put on your wrist that help with morning sickness, motion sickness and sea sickness. From what I have read on here, these have worked miracles for some people. If all this fails, have her mention it to her doctor, who can give her medication. One more thing, tell her not to eat three big meals, but snack lightly throughout the day. This will help a lot! Tell her good luck!

I had very bad morning sickness. I lost over 20 lbs in my first trimester. My doctor even but me on medication so I would stop throwing up. The only thing that helped even a little. is to have crackers near her bed in the morning and a glass of water. before she gets out of bed to nibble on the crackers and just sip the water. Then just take everything easy, treat it like you are dizzy, slowly get out of bed. Milk was the worst for me so I tried to stay away from milk products.
