Hello, My daughter has been on nutramigen formula since she was about 2 months old d/t constipation. She will be 1 in 10 days, so i tried regular milk yesterday since she will be on it shortly and she was terribly constipated today. Has anyone else experienced this and what did you have to do? Look forward to hearing from anyone thta has went through this. Thanks, T.

My sister had a similar problem with her son and eventually switched to soy milk which has seemed to help. If the slow mixing doesn't seem to help with the transition, consider trying soy milk, at least for now...

My daughter was also on Nutramigen when she was a baby. When I introduced milk I only did one ounce at a time. I would decrease one ounce of formula and add one ounce of milk over a weeks time until the bottle was eventually all milk. It was so gradual she didn't have any problems and it was an easy transition.

try goats mild, it's close in dna to humans. also try lactain free milk. also, you are just supposed to put a little in with the formula and add a bit more aevery couple of days. of course the child is constipated...you shocked her system. go slowly and if it takes a few weeks to switch her over to milk, then so be it. happier baby in the long run.

Good morning mom (s), i am not too sure about the causation between constipation and whole milk. In my case my daughter had loosey goosies. However, i just wanted to share the best remedy ever for constipation... Just heat up some prune juice, let it cool to taste and give it to her. The constipation problem will run itself out--fast! Stay encouraged.

Did u give her just milk or about 4 parts formula, 1 part milk? From there u would do 3 parts formula - 2 parts milk - w parts formula 3 parts milk, up until she is just taking milk - it did take a little longer w/our daughter who was on the similac soy formula but just do it gradually to see it that helps at all. Good luck!

Hi T.,
My son got very constipated when we moved from breastmilk to whole cows milk at 13-14 months. After consulting with the pediatrician, we switched to 2 percent milk, and he tolerated that just fine. It's normally recommended to switch to the lowfat milk at 2 years, if you do it sooner, be sure to discuss with your baby's doctor first

The other moms gave great advice. Another thing to consider is you don't necessarily have to give her cow's milk. You could also try soy milk or rice milk and see if those work any better. Check the labels though to make sure they have enough calcium and vitamin D, which is what she needs. If you go with soy or rice milk, make sure your daughter gets enough good fat in her diet. Tese milks have less fat than whole cow's milk and kids this age need fat to build brain tissue so feed her good fats like avocados and olive oil.

During her transition from only breastfeeding to eating solids and cow's milk, my daughter spent a long time having really bad constipation and I never suspected the milk as being the cause until she got her first cold and I took her off milk for that week...magically her constipation got better. Now I limit the amount of milk she gets...she only can have it as a treat every now and then and in small amounts. Yogurt doesn't seem to have the same effect so she has lots of that instead. If she does get constipated we give her organic prunes (gerber makes a good baby food version) which helps a lot...and she loves them. Good luck!

My pediatrician had us do a gradual change out by mixing the 2 together. the first week mostly formula with some milk than a gradual change over the next few weeks until you have all milk. To keep the baby from becoming constipated, limit the milk to 2 to 2 1/2 cups a day (including any in cereal). Too much milk will keep the baby too full to eat other nutritious foods and can cause anemia (milk has no iron). To ward off constipation, give your daughter foods rich in fiber like whole grain or whole wheat.

Hi There,
Many kids get constipated during the transitions from formula/breastmilk to milk. Both of my kids did. What worked for us was to gradually mix more milk and less formula. I would start by subtracting 2 onces of formula and adding 2 onces of milk for each feeding. After a couple of days, I would do another once or 2 of milk, and less formula. The gradual change helped the body ajust. I also gave my kids apple sauce mixed with prunes, or canned mandarin organges which work as a laxative. Good luck!!

Hi T., I had the same issues with my daughter. A few ppl suggested that I start out small & it worked. So I would make her oatmeal with a little milk or just put some milk in the different things she ate. Just work your way to larger incriments. It worked for us, hopefully it works for you too.
