I have heard those Debbie Meyer bags are great, and she has one out for breads...got mine at Linens and Things, I would think stores (grocery) and Bed Bath and Beyond would have them also, know QVC has them.

Hi Am wondering if anyone actually still uses breadboxes, especially here in AZ? Do they really keep bread fresher longer? We eat only natural breads which go moldy quickly here, so I freeze them, but that takes up valuable freezer space....just checking with you smart ladies...:)

I thought breadboxes were strictly used as a unit of measure ("Is it bigger than a breadbox?"). :)
Wikipedia says breadboxes were used to keep bread fresh in the days before bread was made with preservatives and wrapped in plastic. We don't use bread fast enough, so I always keep it in the fridge, even with all the preservatives and plastic wrap...
No, I always keep my bread in the refridgerator all year long. I keep gum in my breadbox!

Three out of four of us are on a gluten free diet. I either have to buy (expensive) gluten free bread or make it in our bread maker. Without the preservatives of traditional bread, it tends to go bad pretty quick. I can't imagine using a bread box here in Arizona with it. Keep your bread in the 'fridge; that is what we do. If I happened to make it in bread maker first, I actually leave it out, uncovered or very loosely draped with wax paper, for twenty four ours to allow the excess moisture to escape as that is what causes the mold to form sooner. Then I bag and put it in the 'fridge. Some people will pre-slice the whole thing, and freeze some, and keep the rest in the 'fridge.

I only use my breadbox during the winter months because during the summer even tho my house is cool it always seems to go bad quick..
I have a breadbox but don't use it much - for all-natural bread, the freezer has been the only way to go for us. It stales and moles too quickly otherwise. And I know what you mean about freezer space! I have NONE right now, all due to bread!! Good luck!!
Keep using your freezer, it's too hot for a bread box. The bread only molds and the bread box does not keep it fresher. It's basically to keep it out of site and looking neater. I use my bread box for vitamin tylenol storage...no more messing looking pill bottles on my counter!!!
i too use the bread box my son made in wood shop only in the winter. in the hotter months i keep my bread in the fridge
I always thought the bread box was just to keep things out of the way, who knew they had a purpose!
The other day I was in Walgreen's and I happened down the isle that has all the as seen on TV ad things and I found the Debbie Meyers vegetable bags, which I have to say work wonders with fruits and veggies! We have used them for about 6 months and gone are the days of brown banana's or rotted peaches! Anyway I noticed that she has new bags, one for cold cuts/meats and one for breads. If the bread bags work as well as the veggie bags it might be worth your 10.00 to try them out and save freezer space! I am thinking about getting them for bagels since they seem to get hard fast here!
I am a BIG fan of the Green Bags advertised on tv and now in the produce section - for veggies and fruits. They really DO work! I have heard they now have them for bread as well. I haven't tried them, but if they work like the green bags, then they probably are awesome. I live in AZ too, and breadboxes don't seem to make bread last any longer. We freeze half a loaf at a time and keep the other half on top of the fridge in a basket - since we know we'll use up that amount quickly.

I've always wonder what a bread box was for... does it keep bread fresh in other states? If I get bread at TJ's or Sprouts I make sure to keep it in the fridge because it goes bad fast.
I use a bread box,I wish it sealed better,Why ? my bread is from bread smith which maybe goes spotty because theres fewer preservatives in the bread,I put part of a paper towel in the bag,Seems to help.Really has been a humid summer,in the box seems better-M. in mpls
