Food Preservative Allergies

Has anyone ever heard of an allergy to sodium benozate? My son broke out in a rash over his lip when I gave him flavored water (usually just give him plain water but it is all I had one me at the time). I also gave him Sprite another time when he was sick and the same thing happened. The common ingredient is sodium benzoate. I told the pediatrician about it and said it was possible but he had not come acrossed it yet in his clients. I did some research online also. I was just wondering if some of you had come across it. I read labels now like you would not believe. I am absolutely floored at the number of items that the sodium benzoate is in like cough syrup or his allergy medication. Just wondering.

What can I do next?

Maybe you could read about the Feingold diet, which eliminates these toxins and allergens with a easy to follow protocol. Here is the website: http://www.feingold.org/

Hi B.! I haven't heard of that type of allergy, but there are so many out there now adays, the doctors don't even know anymore. I just wanted to tell you about these products that I started buying, and it has helped my families allergies a lot. We use all natural kid and eco friendly products in our home now, and it's GREAT! I'm talking cleaners, detergent, soap, bath and body products, cosmetics, vitamins, tooth paste... you name it. We just started the transition not too long ago, and just using one of the lotions on my daughter has stopped the eczema all together. It's great. She's only two, and it was so sad to always see her scratching her legs and leaving marks. My husband also isn't bothered by his skin allergies since I started washing his clothes with the new detergent. Just a suggestion for you. I think everyone should know about these products, especially if you're going GREEN. With all the harmful chemicals surrounding our children, it's no wonder there's so many health problems that the doctor's don't even know about. I don't want to expose my child or future children to them anymore if I can help it. If you would like to hear about this company that sells over 400 products that are guaranteed to have no harmful chemicals, then request info at ____@____.com. Please leave me your phone number and best time to be reached so I can contact you.

Hi,
My daughter began having allergic reactions to foods when she was a young toddler. Many things she reacted too we couldn't pinpoint the exact ingredient because some ingredients have various names. I knew for a fact that she was reacting to food preservatives because if she ate any processed foods she would react. After finding out that she has an allergy to peanuts and milk, I was also told that food preservatives have many names. One preservative could be called various things on labels so it is nearly impossible to determine which one the child is reacting to. I read labels and tried my best to match up ingredients that were the same in products and often times they did not match. I would start with a good allergist and get his/her advice and some allergy testing done. It is a good start and then you will have a better idea of what or how to avoid certain things. Good luck!

YES! Sodium Benzoate is a toxic additive; in my opinion, soda and cough syrups are toxic as well. Instead of offering Sprite and cough syrups when he is sick, why not try safe herbal remedies? I'd be happy to discuss this with you further if you like. :o)

I think to be on the safe side you should talk to a true Allergy Doctor. They might want to run some tests. Either way... whenever you feel it's an allergy it's better to be overly cautious!
Also, I try to avoid sodium benozate.... and it is hard... but I have noticed we have more behavioral issues when the kids have that additive... it's worse than when they just have sugar!
Best of Luck!

You would be surprised how many types of allergies there are! Additives are definitely bad news. My younger son has autism and he is allergic to milk proteins and to wheat. I have also been advised to watch food additives and chemical/cleaner use in the house. I definitley try to go free of dyes, perfumes, preservatives, and go more natural. I've definitely become an avid label reader. I would see an allergist, too. Good luck.

I have a son with ADHD and have been reading that this addititve causes behavior issues. I don't know what things contain sodium benzonate except some of the soy suace packets you get at restaurants.

What kinds of foods should I be looking at?

It is very common to be allergic to food preservatives and additives. Did you know that Diet Coke (among other things, of course) was just banned in the UK because of this additive. They have found it changes peoples DNA. I have been avoiding them since 1999 when I noticed a difference in my children when they received them. If you learn to cook from scratch and drink water, they are not that hard to avoid. Let me know if you would like some more information. BTW what is the age of your child, an allergist will not get an accurate reading on a child until they are at the very minimum over four and that is still pushing it.

I agree with previous poster - get to an allergist. Those kind of things should be looked into. Plus, they may be able to give you some good tips on what all to avoid and do testing to see what else he is allergic to.

Hi B.,

Sodium Benzoate is being removed from a lot of products because it has been found to be toxic. AND, yes, we are all allergic to synthetic, toxic ingredients. Some of us just show it differently. Sodium Benzoate is believed to increase the production of free radicals which in other words, means it causes cancers.

You are smart to read labels. There are a lot of other harmful ingredients in many things that go unnoticed because the FDA has approved them. If you'd like to talk about some of the other things, like the Q-15 in most bath and body products, I'd be willing to give you an earful, lol.

God bless!
