It is fairly easy to make and decorate your own cake. I like recipezaar.com. If you decide to make your own instead of buy one, you can get exactly what you want for a lot less money.
I am new to the Draper area, and my daughter will be turning one on October 1st. I am looking for a good bakery that will do small cakes for the birthday. We aren't having an extravagant birthday Just babe, hubby and I. I would love to have a delicious cake though.
I went to Harmon's and purchased the cake. They also gave me a "Smash" cake for free. Of course I have cake coming out of my ears because it was only the three of us. My daughter didn't smash her cake either. She didn't want much to do with it. The cake was delicious though, and the have the best frosting!

Both the Harmons on 114th and up on Bangeter will do a small cake for birthdays for free. I believe you have to buy the large to get the small for free though. If you ask when you order then will let you sample their cakes/frostings. They aren't gormet however for a grocery bakery they are pretty good. My son turned 1 in May and I bought a large dump truck cake for his party and they did a small one to match. It worked out great. Good Luck!
p.s. I just reread that you will be alone if that is the cake you can still get a cake their but purchase it or you can go over to pirate o's off 119th s and 7th east. They carry small cakes from a local bakery who has won best of state for their cakes.
Cupcakes! Decorate them differently and then she can have special "leftovers".
I have a darling friend in Draper who makes custom cupcakes out of her home. She has some darling ideas--Her name is Tatum and her number is ###-###-####. She also has a blog with a few pictures on it....http://merrillnotes.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2008-...
You'll have to scroll through because she has pics posted as she does them, but there are some seriously cute things and she is an awesome cook--tasty and cute!! Good Luck and happy birthday!!
Target Bakery makes small cakes that are about the size of a woman's 8 shoe. This was the perfect size for her to dig into on my daughters birthday, but it will easily feed 4-6 people. Hope this helps.

Albertson' grocery stores offer babies first birthday cake for preferred customers (anyone can be, just ask at the register for a card). I just had one made for my little guy. The cake was darling, and it tasted great, what we tasted of it! We let the one year old have it all to himself, pretty fun and affordable, Albertson's did a great job!
