Finding Aftercare in Case of Longer Work Hours

Hi Moms,

I'm looking for work and the daycare my son goes to is open till 6:15 which works with most employers. I have to take public transportation, at least in the short term, so I need to plan for aftercare in case of late days. Hubby works longer hours. Don't really have any mom friends in the neighborhood. Any suggestions on possible resources I can look for? It's not an issue yet, but I want to head it off before it becomes an issue. I'm thinking that it would be more of an emergency back-up as opposed to a regular time after 6:15 thing.

Your thoughts?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I would say that you need to re-think this if you truly have no friends. I have neighbors who we put on the forms, friends from church, friends from the community. If you don't pick up your child from child care on time they can call the police to have your child picked up for being abandoned.

You MUST put other people on that contact list. That is the emergency pickup person. You would call that person in the event that you are not going to be there to pick your child up.

It is your responsibility to notify the person on the list and then confirm to the child care provider that they can expect XXX to pick up your child.

Otherwise choose a child care setting by your work and pick kiddo up before getting on the public transportation.

If it's only going to be sometimes, can you pay the late fee for daycare? I would think it'd be hard to find someone to pick him up and take him home on short notice. My sitter is willing to keep my kids late on an as-needed basis for cost. We only need that when I travel, which isn't too often (yet).

Call your local high school and ask if they have a child development program. If they do, contact the teacher and tell her your story. She might have a student who will help you on an as needed basis or she might know of someone who can help you.

Adventure Kids Play Care is the best. They have several locations and you don't even have to make a reservation--you just show up with your kid. You can even pay a very small fee for them to feed your child. We love it!
