My neighbor just brought me some figs - fresh from their shrub. What do I do with them?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We tried them, but no one in my family liked them. I took them to work and my boss said his wife loves them - so they were eaten + I got points with my boss!! :)

When they are soft - eat them. As is. Do not offer to share with anyone (unless you have a lot of them). If you have too many to just eat - you can share, you can cook with a little sugar to make a yummy spread for jam, you can stuff with a little gorgonzola for a super appetizer.

Hopefully they are really ripe and you eat them as fruit. They are so good. A former neighbor used to cut them and spread them on toast, like a jelly. They are a great source of fiber. I was once told to remove the skin and seeds I when I do have them, I just bite in and eat. They do go bad quickly so no more than 2 or 3 days in the fridge.

They are good in a salad or just by themselves. I used to pick them from a tree and just eat them.

I guess I'm one of the few that REALLY doesn't like to just eat figs. We do get them in our produce co-op sometimes, this is what I do with them:

My son loves to eat it in his oatmeal. I just put it a bagel, with some cream cheese and the preserves on top.

I like to put them in salads with baby spinach, candied walnuts, goat cheese & balsamic dressing. You can slice them & have them wrapped up in proscuitto & drizzled with honey, too.

My favorite appetizer: Chop some figs up, mix with goat cheese, spoon a little onto prosciutto, roll it up, heat in a pan for a few minutes until slightly golden.

Make fig preserves.
Put them in a blender, soften a container of vanilla ice cream and stir them in.
Eat them as is.
