Fever and Tylenol Vs. Advil

My 10 month old has been running a mild fever (100.1) for the last 12 hours. We believe it is due to teething. I tried Tylenol last night and it seemed to have no impact on the fever so this morning I gave her Advil and it seems to help with the fever, but also seems to "wire" her. She will not take her nap and she was up and down all night and only slept about 30 minutes this morning. Any suggestions???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all. Her fever spiked to 103.2 yesterday afternoon and I took her to the pediatrician, it seems she has strep throat, her brother had it at Thanksgiving. Anyway, thank you again, the Motrin definately helped relieve her discomfort and allowed us all to get a little sleep last night.

Hi , J. ...
Although it sounds a bit unusual , infant formula Benadryl helps a lot with the restlessness and the inflammation.
I've both used this and heard of many other moms using this when the teething pain and symptoms were extreme , and when it was interfering with the child's sleep.
Hope it helps ~ A.

Hello I would first make sure the dose is correct. for every ten pounds the dose should be .8 of tylenol so if the baby is about 18 pounds you should be giving the baby 2 doses of .8 of infants tylenol. you can also alternate tylenol and advil the often helps, also try a luke warm bath or cool wet wash cloth.

Have you tried children's motrin. You can give it at the same time as tylenol and I find that it helps reduce stubborn fevers very well. You really don't need to treat a fever less than 101 unless you daughter is really uncomfortable.

My daughter had a fever back in March at just over a year old. It ended up spiking so high that we rushed her to the emergency room. She had a seizure because of the high fever. Scariest thing we ever saw. Whenever she gets fussy and very warm, i always alternate every 4 hours between tylenol and motrin. It works very well to keep the fever down. I heard some bad things about Advil for children and don't think i would ever use it. It's also very hard to get a correct reading at that age. Stay in touch with your child's doctor.
Good luck.

Here is a link to dosage. I use it all the time.

http://askdrsears.com/html/8/T089900.asp#T089902

"For very high or stubborn fevers, alternate between Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen every three hours (i.e., give a dose of acetaminophen then three hours later give ibuprofen then three hours later acetaminophen, etc.) These two medications are safe to use together like this."

A fever that low really doesn't need anything unless your kiddo is uncomfortable. For teething pain I recomend Hylands Teething tablets, they are homeopathic and worked wonders for my son. You also can't overdose them. Most any place has them, if not with the OTC meds check the baby isle.

On a old wives tale: Put a raw egg in a sock and hang it above your ft door. I know it sounds funny but ppl swear by it for teething.

I've found that Motrin works the best to reduce the fever. You can alternate tylonel and motrin every 4hours.

Is it really necessary to medicate for a low grade fever and especially if she's not really bothered by it? I think it's better to let the fever run it's course- it's the body's natural way of fighting infection. If it's teething related try giving her one of those teether blankets that has little knots on the edges she can chew on, or even a wet washcloth during the day. Those always worked well for us.

for high fevers alternating is good. For that type of temp I would only treat if my child was visibly uncomfortable, achy, clingy, which I suspect your daughter might have been?

I score regular ibuprofen into quarters and give 1/4(50mg) to 1/2(100mg) a tablet(I dissolve with a few drops of water and give with a teaspoon of applesauce-it's pretty much tasteless). My kids would never take any liquid medicine so I got creative. My point is perhaps the food dye in the advil made her a tad hyper. Also, I keep pediatric tylenol suppositories for when they're throwing up and feverish.

Teething tablets are great also.
