Feeding Baby Solids on Vacations (No Highchair)

We are taking our 11 month old on a long vacation out of US. We most probably wont have highchairs there. I hold and feed him when I visit friends houses who don't have high chair , but my arms are all sore at the end of it. I won't be able to do it everyday 3 times a day. The only idea I have come up with is feed him in his carseat. Would love to hear any other ideas that could work for me. How do you do it mommas? Thx?

What can I do next?

When you get to where you are going invest in a cheap booster seat. When
you are done with it, you can donate it.

I agree with the portable seat or a porta high chair. My cousin has an amazing little portable high chair - it folds up like a camp chair. If my toddler was younger, I'd get one of those and stash it in my car. We have a portable seat that inflates when you unzip it, but folds down to about 3" high when you don't need it and the straps become carry straps.

When my daughter was that age, I had a folding seat that hooked right onto the edge of the table. It was excellent for traveling, and fit into a suitcase. You can probably find one at any baby store. I think I got mine at Toys R Us.

We had a Fisher-price booster seat that strapped onto a kitchen chair. That might be a worthwhile investment for your trip.

Ours looked just like this:

There are foldable "travel" boosters that would probably be worth it and handy.

I would get one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Regalo-Diner-Portable-Hook--Chair/d...

cheap, simple- packable, portable. They just hook on to the table... of course it may depend on how much your baby weighs- MY daughter would have been just fin in one of these at that age and unless yours has a lot of extra-"love", chances are they fit just fine in it! I don't have one myself, but i have seen other kids use them, and they actually are very sturdy and safe!

Good luck! Have a great trip!

I traveled to PA from TX with my son to visit family with no high-chairs. I got this - http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=428246... - and it worked fine. It folds down small and actually fit in my luggage. I was able to shove socks/underwear/etc. into all the little spaces in and around it so it really didn't take up too much room. It may be a lifesaver for you :)

We have the third one down on this website, with the hippos on the arms, http://www.thenewparentsguide.com/baby-booster-highchair-...

We used it at my parents and in-laws house as well as at any resturant we went into. My highchair cover got to dirty and I felt like I could never get it clean, and my dd was so tiny, even in high chairs from places I felt like she could never reasch the table. Plus they are so dirty! This solved all our problems.

There's a great fold-up booster seat that has straps to attach to any chair and a snap-on tray. I think it might have been the Fisher-Price one. I found it easy to keep clean (wipe down right away) and that it didn't take up tons of room either. Just be sure to use the straps, keep the seat tight to the chair, and to stay with baby; some chair tip over more easily than others, causing head injuries in babies. Like anything, use good caution. I did like this product, though.

Are you taking a stroller? Just put him in that or does he have to be at the table?

I would get one of those soft portable fold up baby chair/seat belt things. It is just material and straps. You attach it to the chair and then you strap them in. It folds up and will take very little room in your luggage. In my opinion, no high chair is like torture for parents!!!

Are you going to be visiting friends /family...or just traveling? If you are going ot be eating in restaurants I would think they would have highchairs or booster seats available. If you are going to be eating in homes...you will just need to come up with a system...maybe one of you can hold the baby on your lap and the other person do the feeding. Is he eating finger food yet or are you still feeding him yourself? If he is eating finger food...now is the time to just teach him to sit at the table ( maybe some telephone books or something else to boost him up to the right height) and as someone else already suggested maybe a belt or piece of material to help keep him in place....and just let the mess begin!! lol Maybe you could even let him "graze"...just eat as he wants to...not necessarily at meal time...just have food available for him to eat as he wants...at the coffee table...or wherever.
You will just need to be flexible.
Where are you going on your vacation?? I spent a month in Europe this last Spring and had a really marvelous time!!

An umbrella stroller?

I've used mine in a pinch and usually I am taking into the restuarant or other location anyway.

Ok this is super ghetto but what we did once was put baby on a normal dining chair in the hotel room and but one of my husbands canvas/fabric style belts around her middle. You can't walk away from them or anything because obviously they are not secured but it works well enough for a feeding assuming they can sit without assistance. Also, they sell a collapsable soft high chair thing that you can strap to a chair - I believe it is made by "the first years" company.
