Family Pics--Color Scheme and Dressing Twins

The colors sound fine to me. But, I personally wouldn't go with the cream dress (unless it is a sweater dress) because it seems out of place with the other, more casual, clothing choices.

I think what you described sounds great! I would go for navy with the hubby so there isn't so much brown/tan.

Also, I LOVE the "typical" white shirt and jeans look. I always find myself admiring those family photos the longest, not really noticing what they have on, just that the photo looks fantastic!

that sounds like it will coordinate well, but not be identical. If they go against each other too much, you notice the clothing rather than the people.
I think your husband could do either. Put the sweaters together and see which you think looks better.

I wouldn't do the white t-shirts with blue jeans. I like the color combos you have chosen.

How played out...white t-shirt and blue jeans. Are you going to wear shoes and socks or go barefoot? Eww...also played out. Dress how you all feel your best and don't wear anything busy. I am sure your photo will be beautiful.

My mom used to dress my sister and I (not twins) in the same dress often or same dress and different colors. I would probably dress non identical twins in similar outfits but different colors.

Be careful with the orange plaid.
I am not a photographer, but we paid to have professional photos done almost 2 years ago (the kind where the photographer meets you on location somewhere---we live near the beach... so you get the idea). Anyway, I asked her what we should wear, as my husband does NOT like the photos where everyone is wearing the same blue shirt and jeans or the same white shirt and khakis.

She told me a few things.
1) You do not have to all wear the same colors. But you should try to stick with neutral OR natural colors. (think blues, tans, creams, greens, browns)
2) Anything in the red family can be very harsh in photos (this includes orange).
3) Be careful with patterns, minimal stripes can be okay, but anything else can disrupt the flow and continuity of your photo.
4) Too many different colored pastels can make you look like a bunch of easter eggs. (So if you want soft blue, all of you or half of you wear soft blue, and the other half wears another soft color---not more than 2 different pastels).
5) All try to wear the same bottoms (color). We opted for jeans.

Our photos were done at Epworth by the Sea and the pier and lighthouse at St. Simons Island. They came out great. Big shady live oaks, with hanging moss... the silvery edges of the bark and the dark underparts showing through with green grass... Sunsets... etc. We were all in denim. I had on a brown sweater. Daughter had on a brown long sleeved Tshirt. Husband had a tan/green/mossy colored polo, and son had on a khaki/moss polo with wide stripes of white and dark green.
All had on brown shoes.

We did some additional ones where the kids changed into black tops (sweater for son, long sleeved T for daughter) and just had the 2 of them in the photos. They were amazing! :)

I think your colors sound ok, but maybe you have too MANY colors.
(blue plaid, orange plaid, navy, brown, cream, denim....) I know how frustrating to feel like you have to go buy clothes JUST for the picture. But even if you get a plain cheap polo or Tshirt, the closer to the same colors, the better your picture will look.

When we do family photos I always put my boys in the same colored pants. The shirts will sometimes be exactly the same and other times will be the same shirt but in 2 different colors. I like to have the pants match though, not sure why, but it looks better to me. I have my husband in either dark or light pants to match the boys too.

I think the colors you suggested would be fine. not super sure of the cream dress only because it "sounds" fancy but if it's a casual sweater type dress that should work. other wise i would put her in navy

That all seems fine and coordinated.
I have seen families do that white t-shirts or white shirts with jeans (the Mom in a white dress) too, and its nice.... depending on the background.

Will these be a studio photo or outdoors?
That makes a difference too.
Fall colors or traditional or contemporary photos with a monochromatic or contrasting background.

We just did family shots. I had a blue plaid shirt on and dark jeans, Hubs wore blue pinstripes and khakis, baby had red checks and blue jean overalls. Sounds busy at first, but it looked nice without being too matchy matchy.

Put the clothes out on the bed or on the floor and see if they all go together nicely. You'll do fine.

I would take a quick photo of everyone in their outfits at home. Then you can decide of everything looks good together by using a visual!

One thing to remember about having photos taken, both white and black are difficult to photograph. With digital cameras it is easier but filers are usually needed with both black and white.
White will sometimes glow and black sucks the light. I know you are not thinking of using black but I thought I would toss that in for good measure.

Other than that it sounds nice.

We had a huge family portrait done with my husbands entire family...so with the kids it was 13 people. Then we did some separate family photos too. We all wore a different brightly colored (solid color ) shirt. We didn't really plan it...my MIL just said to wear a sold color and everyone had on something a very different. It ended up looking super cute. I think your clothes you picked out sound very cute. If the plaid is bright/busy I might switch that to a sold color though.

Look at the polo shirts from children's place.....same shirt pattern/stripes but different colors. I love putting my boys in those because they are matching without matching exactly.

I am looking at the family pictures I have on my desk at work. In one picture, we are all wearing red. That looks GREAT against the black backdrop.

In the other ones, the girls are in white and the boys are in either Navy blue or light blue with white sweater vests.

I always dress my boys the same, they are 2 years apart. At least I have in the past...as they get older I'm sure I'll change it up, but for now, I like them matching.

What you have planned sounds fine. As a photographer I ask my clients to send me quick cel phone shots of the outfits layed out on a bed. Your photographer probably has a good eye for this and can help. If you have to buy something don't get white shirts and jeans. That look is out of date. Think more coordinating colors and patterns not matching. Good luck with your session.
