Eye Twitching

My 7 year old grandson stays with us as my Step Daughter gave me limited guardianship, supposedly so he could go to our school district. We've asked her to do this for years as she makes horrible decisions, is homeless, has been homeless, done drugs, been drop down drunk in front of her child, has various men he called Dad in his life you got the picture, , but has never allowed us to do it. FINALLY we have some conrol on the situation. We wlecome her to come visit, but she does not.. only 10 minutes one night, since Christmas and even then she missed the big breakfast and dinner and the present opening, and was only here about 30 minutes at night.

Lately his one eye has been twitching and it's very annoying to him, but not painful. I've read it could be loss of sleep or stress. He goes to 2 karate clases a week and that's about it, we do NOT drag him all over the place like his Mom used to.. he goes to bed at 8 on school nights, watches tv for 30min then I read to him and he's allowed to read till 9PM then lights out. I asked him if he's is worried about anything, and he said, just that his Mom doesn't come visit him, and Granna Kimmie (she died about 2 months ago) He did seem very concerned when talking to me about it tho.

Is this too much do you think? Should I take him to his Pediatrician?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THis is my first time using this site, so I'm not sure how many times I can update. I will tell you this, I got him a large teddy bear today and told him to cover it with his blankie (yes he has one of those) and hug it till he falls asleep, I think that may help. Also, I'm giving him more to drink so far, and I give him healthy food, but he goes about every 2 or 3 day cycles of being really interested in eating. I give him him Ovaltine, has lots of vitamens, not to mention the milk, and he will never turn it down. If it persists very much longer I will take him to first his pediatrician and then an eye doctor,,I SOOOOOO appreciate all of your help.. OH YA< he's been going to a councelor since about October now.

I have been having an unexplained twitch in my left eye for a few weeks. My BIL is an eye doctor. He said most twitching is nothing to be worried about. If it persists past a week or two, he said to make an appointment with the optometrist. He said an eye doctor can see if you suffer from dry eyes (which can cause twitching). And sometimes eyes twitch from fatigue because you need glasses or a new prescription. And other things like caffeine, sleep deprivation and stress can also be the cause.

Magnesium can play a role also. Make sure he is getting some in a multivitamin. I had a twitch that lasted a week straight (not stopping even once) and just recently I have one that is on and off for a month. Sleep and anxiety are ALWAYS a factor with mine. He may have a bit of anxiety... you can try an amino acid called Suntheanine/L-theanine... it is something the body makes on its own so it is very safe and helps with anxiety.

My eye will twitch if I haven't had enough water to drink. Make sure he's getting enough to drink during the day. The old rule of 64 oz a day isn't really as accurate. The rule is half their body weight in oz, so 100lbs should have 50 oz min a day. Increase to adjust for any sweating from physical activity etc.
It does also twitch if I'm stressed or tired.

Wow. He has had a lot going on lately, lots of changes. I would make sure he is eating right and drinking plenty of water as suggested. Also, he could still not be getting enough sleep if he is not getting the deep sleep he needs. My eye twitches if I don't sleep enough. I also get a twitch during high stress. This is a lot of stress for him. Talk to him a lot and let him talk through his feelings. If this all just strted, it will take a while. I don;t think I would jump to the doc unless he has trouble seeing or it starts to hurt or bother him.

I get crazy twitches when I am stressed out. During a particular rough patch a few years back, I had one it my eye and one in my leg that did not go away for 2 months!

Based on just his circumstances alone though, the best thing you can do for this boy is to get him into therapy ASAP. There is no telling what kinds of things he has seen and experienced at this young age! And then for his mother to not even visit, that has to be heartbreaking and confusing for him. He might not even know how to express those feelings in words yet. He is after all only 7 and this recent change in his life is HUGE and the feelings that would come from a situation like this are going to be very complex. He needs consistant therapy so he can work out some of his feelings.

I am so very happy to hear he is living with you now. He will need a lot of time to start to feel normal about his new situation. He needs to feel wanted and worthy and loved. He might need a whole lot of rest to really get his body caught up. It might take him a while to really open up to you. Sounds like you already know, but be patient with him :)

Sending you both big hugs!!!

My daughter gets "nervous tics" when she is under stress. She knows when they are happening but the more she focuses on them the worse it gets. Her ped said that we shouldn't call attention to them because that makes it worse, and eventually it will go away. She said that a neurologist would not do anything for it unless it impacts her socially. She sees a therapist who says she is burying her anxiety instead of dealing with it.

My eye has been twitching the last few days and it is because I am over tired. I would call your ped and see what she says.

Poor guy. I can't imagine how stressed he is, his Mom not bothering to see him. :( I think he needs counseling for his situation, and a trip to the eye doctor to check out the twitching.

Allergies will make them twitch, too. Try Claritin or Zertic in the generic or store brand.

This is a good question to ask his counselor. I would think he's quite stressed because, first he's now living with you and not his mother, he's not seeing his mother, and Granna Kimmie died. That would put even adults over the top and he's a child who understands even less. Stress can cause tics such as this.

Good that he's seeing a counselor and I really like your giving him a teddy bear. I gave a 7 yo foster daughter a stuffed rabbit and she used it for comfort all of her child and teen years. She's now 32 and still has the rabbit. Stuffed animals often help children to feel more secure.

As to how often you can update. There is no limit.

I have an eye-twitching problem like that. I havent noticed a pattern with it, sometime I go months with out my eye twitching, then it will twitch for a few days in a row and be gone again. With everything that the poor boy has been through, I would guess that it is stress related, but since it isnt harming him, there isnt much need for concern. Still, for safety measures, ask the counselor or take him in for a doctor visit

I highly recommend speaking to his ped! Also, talk to his ped about counseling. I know it helped dramatically when I took my son to therapy as I was not a stable mom in the beginning. I hope you are able to find solice.
