Eye Infections

My 17 month old has greenish/yellow discharge coming from her eye. The eye itself is not red, but is puffy underneath (I believe from me cleaning it out with a cotton ball). This is an issue that is reoccuring. I have taken her to the Doctor regarding this on 4 separate occasions to which they tell me it is not pink eye and perscribe eye drops. The eyedrops work, but the discharge comes back. I believe that it may be allergy related. Has anyone experienced this same problem? The doctors tell me that she is too young to test.

What can I do next?

I had the same issu about a month ago. We had Pink eye running through and all my girls got it twice. So as soon as it was done with in 24 hrs later someone got it back. It took me to stay on drops for 2 weeks completly before it was gone. So maybe shes not on the drops long enough. You would also have to wait if the baby has allergies till after alergy season.

Sounds like a blocked tear duct?

We are actually going through the same thing with our newborn. It comes and goes with the weather. I think it is allergy related, but we have not been to he doctor for it. The discharge doesn't bother my newborn as of right now. If/When it does bother her then we will go to the doctor. My mother told me that when I was little I had the same thing, but my ducts were clogged and once they were unclogged it took care of the problem. Sorry this doesn't really answer your question, but I thought it maybe comforting to know that others are going through the same thing. Good Luck.

My kids both had this (albiet when they were infants) and it was a blocked tear duct. I was concerned but hte pediatrician said just to continue cleaning it with a clean, damp wash cloth and it should eventually resolve itself (it did). If it hadn't resolved itself, there was a minor in-office procedure they could perform to open it back up.
Or, like others have said, it could be related to a sinus infection (which can travel to the eye).

Okay, so it might be allergies. Maybe dust, maybe your soap/fabric softner. You can try changing those things. You might want to try an allergy med? Like Zyrtek if it is dust, that should help. I think the discharge is your daughters bodys way of "fighting" this off. keep the area clean, as you are doing. My son had this when he was young (2 months) and it was a blocked tear duct, that finally cleared up as he grew.

My son gets the nasty green goop every time he has a sinus/allergy issue I would ask if he can take some type of allergy med like children's claritin or zyrtec. They zyrtec works better for my youngest while claritin works better for my older son.

I had this with a sinus infection. So it could be allergy related. I woke up and my right eye was producing what looked like snot. Rather gross, but I had a cold that progressed to a sinus infection. She then prescribed antibiotics since a sinus infection is bacterial where the cold was not. They worked pretty quickly.

When my daughter would get ear infections she would always get discharge from her right eye. Both of my kids have allergies (5 yr & 1yr) and both are on allergy meds. My oldest takes Zyrtec and my youngest is already on allegra. They have both been miserable with this weather...I would talk to your pedi about some solutions other than eye drops. They work for a short time and then the symptoms come right back.

They should be sending a culture of the discharge to the lab. Ask your doctor if they took a culture. If not, request one.

My daughter's eye or eyes would do this when she had an ear infection. Has she had a cold lately that could have filled up her sinuses and is coming out her eyes and also be trapped in her ears.
