Exercise and Pregnancy - Chicago,IL

I won't know for sure till I wake tomorrow, but I think I am pregnant (I had a terrible back ache last Sunday, with cramps on Monday but I never got my period. I had discharge today instead..... I'm on day 31......

In any case, I recently got back into doing my old workout routine (save for it being half the usual time).....I love doing kickboxing and cardio-dance,with Pilates and yoga.

Question: if I am pregnant, I can still do my kickboxing as long as I don't overheat, right? I won't do abs, I just want to do some punches, kicks, some leg work (lunges), and maybe work my arms.

I swear I caused my first miscarriage by exercising, so with the next two pregnancies, I just walked and did prenatal yoga. This time around, I would really like to keep up with some of my other stuff. What are the rules here?

I'd also love some suggestions for good pregnancy workout DVDs. Anything involving dance or kickboxing --or even something like The Firm.

What can I do next?

I was still kickboxing (the class @ 24hr fitness) until the 6th month or so of my first pregnancy. I didn't do abs after they told me I wasn't supposed to lay on my back at a certain point. And I as soon as I got pregnant i couldn't bring myself to run anymore, I just felt it was too bouncey. But the Kickboxing I kept up, just went at my own speed. The second time I did the kickboxing too, just only up to 5 months out of laziness and I just felt bigger and more unweildy earlier on.

From what I understand, if you are exercising before you're pregnant, you can keep right on doing the exercising. You have to listen to your body, and to your doctor. Deciding to train for a triathalon suddenly in your 2nd trimester is completely different from continuing an already existing exercise routine. Please don't blame yourself and your exercising for your miscarriage. From what I've read, exercise is not proven to cause miscarriage (it's usually chemical, hormonal, age or trauma related (http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancycomplications/m...)

Be healthy, and congratulations if you come up positive! :)

VERY slim chance you caused your first miscarriage. Miscarriage is almost always the body's way of saying there was something wrong with the pregnancy.

Obviously talk to your doctor, but I think you can keep exercising. Just be smart about it. If it doesn't feel good, stop doing it! I'm a runner but at 10 weeks running started feeling weird - I felt an odd pressure in my belly and constantly had to pee (I could only run a quarter mile before having to pee again). So, I stopped doing that! But I did the elliptical machine for an hour a day all the way up to right before I gave birth. I'm also a swimmer, and I swam 3000 yards the day before I had my daughter. Keep up the exercising, just be careful. Congrats on your pregnancy :)

I know women who did high impact or swam a mile till the day they delivered. If your up to it, and not pushing yourself unreasonably, I think you can do any exercise you want, including abbs. just listen to your body, it knows when to stop. One day abb exercises will just feel all wrong and you'll know its time to stop . Miscarriage is quite common, I doubt it was exercise.

You can do cardio, weight lifting, exercise and ab workouts are good too. Just ask your Dr and don't do anything contact related.

I always worked out BEFORE I got pregnant, so I worked out my WHOLE pregnancy kickboxing/cardio classes... Until 8 months... I never had an issue... Only stopped because I fell and hit my head on our fishtank and hurt my neck...

Well I worked out to damn near exhaustion everyday I was pregnant this last pregnancy I had. I never had a better pregnancy and my body is not only bouncing back but better than ever and my baby is not even a month yet. I did kickboxing, Pilates , weights, yoga, rollerblading , walking.... Etc

But I'm not your doctor, I listened closely to my body and knew what days I could step it up, and what days to keep it light. No one can tell you what's appropriate on here. But I can say that keeping up with my routine was one of the best decisions I ever made. My labor was easy, my recovery easier .

Oh.... And there ARE NO good pregnancy DVDs that I could find. They all were too easy for athletic people. I guess for liability reasons.

Keep exercising. I was pregnant with twins and my doctor kept telling me to continue exercising. I doubt exercise caused the miscarriage. Congrats!

There is no reason to stop exercising unless your doctor indicates you are an at risk pregnancy, or you are involved in contact sports. I had two early miscarriages. Each time I called they always said "there is nothing you can do to cause or to prevent a miscarriage". I kept running until month 7 then switched to walking and yoga.

After I bled at 11 weeks after excercizing with my second, I got scared and never did that pregnancy or pregnancy number 3. It was a huge mistake and the weight gain was awful! This time, I got the blessing from my doc and vowed not to put myself through that again.

I did bleed at 7, 12, and 14 weeks, but was assured it was because of hormones at 7 and 12, and a bleed not related to working out at 14 weeks. I had to learn to trust my doctor and that she wouldn't steer me wrong.

I'm now 30 weeks and I Zumba at home or at the Y three times a week and do water aerobics at the Y 4 times a week. I have started having a problem pulling my lower belly/pelvic muscles when pulling my knees up in certain moves, but other than that, I'm plugging right along.

As far as belly work, I read that after month 4 you should not do any ab work that involves lying on your back. Up until then, you can do ab work until it doesn't feel 'right' to you anymore.

You did not cause your first miscarriage.
My doc always said its ok to continue what you are doing just don't start a whole new fitness craze. Take it easy.

I continued spinning with my first, continued running with my second & unfortunately stopped doing everything with my third I was just to tired ;)
Hope it goes better for you.

Also OMG, got my fingers crossed for you!
