I recently heard about a non-surgical, non-reversible birth control called Essure. Can anyone tell me more about this procedure from personal experience?

What can I do next?

I had a friend who did this procedure last May (2007). She has had zero problems. There are no added hormones just the extremely small, spring like things in your fallopian tubes. She said they were as small as the springs you find in your ball point pens. She has not regretted having this done at all and also has two darling children. After seeing her very positive experience, I am planning on getting this done this year after I check with my insurance company. I would say find a doctor in your area that does this procedure and then go and have a consultation with him and then make your decision. I think one thing that you need to NOT let sway your decision - the OPINIONS of others. They are just that - opinions. We should all remember to give the facts as they are asked and not place judgement on others. Good luck to you and I hope that you find a solution that works for you!!

Well I hadn't heard of that one in particular but even if you don't want more children.... can this really be good for your body? I mean God made women the way He did for a reason and screwing with your hormones in such a fashion is just asking for trouble in the long run!

Seems to be there's better options out there that don't mess with your body so much.and how is this considred "noninvasive" to who a guy doctor?! Anyhow I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig.

Well I had it done for 30th Birthday. My thoughts on the whole process was since I provided 3 beautiful children for our family, my husband could get fixed but he was a big baby and chickened out. I was tired of taking Birth Control and fighting my weight (plus having thyroid problems) so I decided to have something done myself. My husband's mother had her tubes tied and did not get to rest after the surgery and ended up getting an infection and had to have a hysterectomey so my husband was very scared. I went in and changed clothes, put an ivy in gave me some medicine and then I was out like a light. When I woke up I didnt know that anything had been done. I went home and slept the rest of the day. Several months later we did the dye test to make sure that everything had grown closed and it had (this is one of the things I like about this process). Another reason I liked this way was there is no opening of the body so infections can't get in and they dont have to pump you up with gas so they can see what they are doing. I've never had the gas done but my mother and sister-in-law(from gal balder surgery) says that you are really sore from the gas blowing you up. It is your body but it does effect your husband and when it comes down to it - it is your decission. Let me know if or when you are having it done so I make sure that you are in my prayers. Lots to Love to All K.

I have not done this, but I was just reading some of the information the other night. A friend of mine did get it done and she highly recommended it to me. The info that I was reading compared this to getting your tubes tied. The Essure puts coils in the fallopian tubes, which cause natural tissue in-growth that block the tubes permanently. That's why it's non-reversible, because the tissue grows right in to the coils. I was worried about having to get an MRI for whatever reason after these are in. But it says that they did safety testing and MRIs are safe. I have heard a lot of stories lately about women who have gotten their tubes tied 10 years ago that are pregnant now. I don't want that to happen. I hope this information helped some.

Hi M.,

I understand where you are at. I am pregnant with my third child and my husband and I are done after this one. I have not heard of this procedure but I do think you should do as much research as you can. I say this because you would be inserting a foriegn object into your body. I had an IUD inserted after my second child and I had major complications. Had I really done my research on the IUD I would have NEVER had it inserted. I just trusted what my doctor had said and thought that that was enough. I think you should definetly get a consultation from a doctor and make sure you research as much as you can before having this done. If all checks out and you feel comfortable doing it than go for it. If not I would look into other ways. The procedure for getting your tubes tied is much simpler now. They do a laperscopy (SP?) surgery. It's just two little incisions one in your belly button and one in your pubic area. BUT a vasectomy for your husband is much easier and cheaper. It all depends on what works best for you. Just keep in mind that you would be putting something into your body. Good Luck!

I don't have any answers about Essure, but I have a question... are you sure?

We had a girl and then a boy 22 months apart. We were satisfied with that and then... three years later we had another boy. It was wonderful! And still is! We don't know what we would do without all three of them. Each so different, and each such a blessing in our lives!

Hi M.,
I had this procedure done back in October and would highly recommend it. It was VERY simple and painless and my insurance covered the procedure 100%.

My mom was telling me about this because my husband and I do not plan on having anymore children either and I can not talk him into getting fixed so it is up to me. I have been on the pill for over 16 years so I want to come off of it besides that I am on the pop pill due to breastfeeding and do not trust it at all. My mom sent me the web site it is www.enssure.com I am thinking of talking to my doctor who is not on their web site list but there is a doctor in his office that is, only if my insurance will cover it. I am like you I want something done and to me this sounds like the way to go because I have an 18 month old son who is very demanding of me and will not go to anyone else and a 4 year old daughter.

I am a nurse that has assisted in implanting this device. It involves no hormones, and doesn't change your body's hormone output. It is non invasive as it doesn't involve any incisions at all. That's why it's called non invasive. It uses a laproscopic device that puts a very small spring in each fallopian tube, and in time, generally six months, scar tissue forms around the springs, and closes off the fallopian tubes. It has to be checked before the woman stops using other birth control methods. There is no down time, and really no recovery period, other than to any possible meds the doctor may give you to relax during the procedure, such as lorazapam.
