Enlarged Lymph Node/lump on the Child's Neck

When I asked my sons doctor about a lymph node that remained swollen after an illness the doctor told me it might remain swollen for years, and it did.

my 14 year old son can sometimes look like "Frankenstein" on his neck as his lymph nodes expand out and look like the screws that were used in Frankenstein...they come and go.

There are times it can take 2 weeks for them to go away. The longest was 3 months.

When the lymph nodes expand? Your daughter's body is fighting an infection or something, in other words? Her body is working.

Stop messing with it. Keep an eye on it but stop worrying over it. Yes, take her to the pediatrician - let them see it and see if they want to draw blood to see what her wbc is.

My son had one the size of a golf ball when he would get colds and ear infections. With us, they just said it would go away and it did.
Personally I would only be concerned if the doctor said there was a reason to be.
ETA: Should they take blood samples - don't be alarmed that's pretty standard if they just want to check. And a friend of ours just had an ultrasound done. Still absolutely fine. But you'll feel better once you see the pediatrician. I wouldn't think about it until then :)

No, I wouldn't be overly concerned. My son was on the thin side, and when he turned his head, I could see his lymph nodes along his neck when he was a toddler. They were there for months after he had a few bad colds. I did have the ped check it (and you should too), but my ped said not to worry about it. I didn't, and eventually they went away - took a long time though.

No need to be concerned until you see the doctor.

It's a question for the doctor. Sometimes it's an enlarged lymph node due to fighting an infection. Sometimes it's a fatty benign tumor. Sometimes it's more than that. Only the doctor can tell you which.

You should call the pediatrician. We can't diagnose over the Internet.

I have a swollen lymph note in my neck that has been there for years. My doctor said he needs to keep an eye on it. It's somewhat soft and firm enough I can feel it. I suggest the doctor will need to see the lump before he can diagnose it. He will then tell you what it is and what, if anything, needs to be done.

I can't even remember which of my kids had perpetually swollen lymph glands but it is perfectly normal. I know one was my oldest because he was constantly fighting off one thing or another. Oddly never got fully sick, just had the bumps until he was around 3. Even now at 28 he can tell when he has a virus because they swell.

when i felt a lump in my daughter i made an appt with her pedi right away. didn't wait for over a month. the pedi sent her for an ultra sound and then referred her to a pediatric surgeon for removal.

My older son sometimes gets enlarged nodes in his neck when he has an illness, but they always shrink back to normal when the illness goes away.

I would be concerned if it did not, because is not *his* normal. It would mean that something was wrong even if he appeared healthy.

I don't think you should freak out, but I do think having it checked is a good idea.
