So, I am freaking out, hopefully for no reason, as my son has had a bump on his neck now for about a year! 3 different docs. including the ear/nose/throat doc that put Liam's ear tubes and they all say it is just a lymph node that hasnt gone down. Has anyone else had this occur? My husband thinks I am over-reacting as I am going to take him back to the doc as you can actually see the bump protrude a bit when he turns his head! This is really scaring me!! I have researched different reasons and most sites say the dreaded "C" word like lymphoma but he doesnt have any of the other symptoms associated with this disease, such as chronic night sweats, lethargy or sudden weight loss! But I get so scared when he is a little warm at night and has damp hair, am I just trying to find something to worry about??!!! Any advice or same experiences would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I just got a call from my doctors office, Liams blood work was fine but she wants to have a surgeon look at it and possibly remove the lymph node and have it sent to pathology! I guess I am pretty scared... but would rather know for sure that nothing is wrong, but I HATE the thought of my son having surgery, I'm pretty terrified right now. The doc says she is 90% certain that nothing is wrong but she doesn't want me worried for 10%. Thsnk you all for your kind and reassuring words!

My son also has this. The only thing that took it away was when he went to the chiropractor. He had the lump for a long time, like when he was 2-3 and the dr said the same thing...it was just a lymph node that has not went down. Then when he was 7, on a fluke, we took him to a chiropractor just to see if his alignment was off and he commented on the bumps and said that is a sign he needed an adjustment. After a couple they went away!! I don't know what you believe in chirpractors and children but that is just what happened to us! :)

I would have them do an ultasound on his neck. I have the same thing and it scares me also. I have had them all of my life (since I was a kid). I finally had them do an ultasound on me last week. They discovered that they are little cysts and again, they are nothing to worry about (so they say). An ultasound will give them a good look into the area and give you more peace of mind. Let me know what they find if you decide to do this.
Thanks

Maybe see if they can biopsy the lymph node without having to remove--I think they can just stick a needle and pull out some fluid.

Also, before going through surgery, you could find a massage therapist who does lymphatic massage and see if that's beneficial.

In the end, listen to your gut.

My daughter has hed 3 lymph node bumps on her neck since she was 2, she is now ten. They are the size of peas, but do get swollen if she is sick. The doctor and her massage therapist all say they are fine. There is nothing to worry about..

Hi,

I can tell you that I have had one since I was little on my neck, it has not grown or changed at all. Once in awhile at my yearly, I will have my Dr check it just for peace of mind. I am 33 years old now and have had no problems with it. Hope this helps!

hello my name is A. and i actually have the same thing! I have had an MRI and ENT evaluations. At night it tends to itch when my room gets to stuffy and at times it flares up when i eat things that have a slight alergin to. I take allergy meds to help calm it down. All the doctors that i have been to have no answers for me so im like your babyBoy with a swolen lymphnode that no one knows how to get rid of it, though this one dr told me that i could have surgery to remove the fluid from it, but it risks the chances of my vocal cords being tampered with which will lead to a change in my voice.

My son has the same lymph bump on his neck,he got it after a cold. It did not go away for a month. I started "freaking out" thinking he has cancer. I also went online and everything is Very Scary about Lymphoma. I took him to his doctor and she said "just to calm you down let's get it checked out". We went to Childrens a week later and the doctor told us-It was nothing to worry about. He said It's a good sign if the Lump moves and stays the same size.He said its not good if the bump is hard and does not move when pushed side to side. That was when he was 3.He is almost 6 and still has the same lymph bump. You can really notice it when he turns his head,or if you look at it just right. At his yearly check-ups, I have his doctor look at it-just to make sure it moves and is the same size. I would get it checked out--because thats the only way I could have peace of mind:-)

well my first reaction is to keep trying and trust your instincts.

get a second, or third, or fourth opinion until you get something that satisfies your curiosity about this. do not stop until you get an answer. your local clinic might not be enough. as for a referral. ask for second opinion referrals.

hope all is normal and well....

I have 3 boys and my 2nd and 3rd both had the lymphnods on the neck that were enlarged. My 2nd is amost 4 and they are now gone. My baby, 18 mo, still has enlarged lymphnods somedays and other days it seems to be gone. I totally freaked out about it when my 3 yr old was little. I first noticed it when he was a few weeks old. The dr's all reassured me it was nothing and it would go away, which it did. If it were something more, you would know!! Don't worry about it.

My son has had the same issue since before he was 1. I always worried (and still do, sometimes). Different pediatricians said the same thing to me, lymph nodes. Does your boy have any other illnesses that might be causing the swollen lymph nodes? Mine has eczema and allergies, which the doctor said could be a cause. You are your child's advocate, so I think if you really feel concerned, you have to do what you think is right. I still question it sometimes, but I am constantly told the same thing by doctors. It's hard when you just want to be sure your child is safe.

I am 30 yrs old, and have had a "bump" on the back of my neck for as long as I remember. Most times, it's very small, but sometimes, when I have a cold, it gets largers. Seems like the more sick I am, the bigger the bump gets. My docs all say it is a lymph node also, so please don't worry about your little guy!!! My 8 yr old daughter also has the same thing.

My kids have lymph nodes on their neck that are visible. I have had them examined for it, but the doctors said it was nothing. I have skinny kids so I think their nodes just stick out a little more than on other people. One of my boys has visible nodes in his groin area, which have also been examined. My older son had one of the nodes in his neck swell up to the size of a peach once. It was very disturbing. He had to be put on antibiotics and it took about a week or so to go down. The only explanation the doctor could come up with was that he had had a mild cold shortly before the node swelled. Have the doctors done blood tests on your son just to rule out any infections or other more serious things? So, yes there can be a variety of reasons for lymph nodes that look a little swollen, but I would have blood drawn (if you haven't already) just to verify it is no big deal.

My son has a small one going on five years now. It's a lymph node that has "crystallized" shouldn't be an issue if you've had it checked out and if they aren't growing/changing/ or tender. Good to be asking though and of course every time he goes to the Dr. you should remind them to look at it.

First, take a very deeeeeep breath! No matter what it is, he will be just fine. You are a mother - it's your job to worry. I think you are doing the right thing by bringing him in - if it's nothing, it's nothing, at least you know, and if it is something - good for you for seeing it and knowing enough to bring him in so he can get treated. Everything will work out - try to relax - it's probably nothing. You and your family will be in my prayers!

Hi Shane,

My son who is now grown had the lumps in his neck. I too was very concerned but they were just what the doctor told me. Swollen lymph nodes. My son had severe allergies, bronchial problems when he was little and always had swollen lymph nodes. I hope this relieves your mind but it is always good to check them out. Since he doesn't have any other symptons it is most likely that. But mothers are concerned about their child.

I also had the same kind of thing with my daughter who is now 7 , about three at the time. Megan (my daughter) had this bump behind her ear, pea size i would say. anyway the family doctor told me nothing to worry about just watch it for change in size etc... well not a good enough answer for me. I kept thinking to myself..it is something that should not be there and i don't like it. So i made an apt with the ENT. ENT also made me feel somewhat like i was worrying too much telling me it was PROBABLLY nothing. So i looked him straight in the eye and i said PROBABLLY??? if this was your child would PROBABLLY be good enough for you? He said well i have to tell you there is a chance but it could be something else. I then proceeded to set up a out patient surgery to have the bump removed.
On to day of surgery the doctor finished the Five minute procedure and came out to talk to my husband and myself. He stated that megan did have a very swollen lymph node but behind the lymph noid there was a small cyst that was begining to scallop the skull bone and could have caused her some real problems down the road. The cyst and lymph node were sent for testing and came back ok. That day the doctor did look at me and say "there is something to be said for MOTHER"S INTUITION"
Follow your intuition, it's god's gift to us mother's.

Hi there, I've personally had lymph nodes in the same place that don't go down for a while. I found out it was an absess in my tooth and another time I had a hangnail on my thumb....well the neck lymph node is the closest node to my hand....so that swelled up until the infection went down. If you have an infection on your leg your groin lymph may swell up. I wouldn't worry about cancer. I would try and find out what his body is fighting since the node won't go down. I Has he had a cold on and off for the year? does he have any cuts on his upper body that aren't healing? when did he have the tubes put in.....maybe his body is reacting to those. I'm sure it's something simple that you may not have even noticed. Go see another doctor. B.

This happened to one of my sons a few years ago and I must admit it freaked me out too! I was very alarmed. I rushed him in when I first saw it. He had been complaining of pain on that side of his head. I wasn't convinced at first when they said it was a lymph node. It did go away after a few months. He has a lot of allergies and post nasal drainage. The doctor felt that must have been what caused it.
Does you son have allergies or a stuffy nose a lot?

If you aren't satisifed with their answers and your gut tells you otherwise, then get another opinion. That is what I would do.
Good luck!

Hi, my 4 year old had the same type of bump. The dr also said it was a lymph node. My son had recently hit his head and the dr said that as the bruise and contusion go away, the blood is draining from the site and that causes the lymph nodes to enlarge. My son is very thin and his hair is cut short so it is noticeable when he turns his head certain ways. My son doesn't have any other symptoms either and I even notice my lymph nodes in the same area on occasion. Sorry I don't have any actual medical advice, but I hope this can be of some help. Take card and God bless.

I'm a little late with this but thought I'd still share. When I had mono at 18 (swelled lymph nodes and all), the left one never went down. I've been able to fell it and have it stick out for 20 years now. It's never bothered me, although a few massage therapists have tried to massage it down (not pleasant, nor does it work). Docs have noted it but never worried. That said everyone is different. I just know I've had a swollen lymph node for 20 years with no problems.
