Hi moms,

I was wondering how you all keep up with kids, the house, and everything else life has to throw at up? I have always had so much energy and lately I feel drained. My husband has even been helping with the house work. I am not much of a sleeper ( I maybe get 6 hours a night) but it has never effected my energy level before. Has anyone taken energy supplements or drink any of those energy drinks? I just need energy. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

It has happened to me too. I think it is harder for SAHMs to keep up energy levels. First, go to the doctor for a blood test. It may be iron levels or something. Get plenty of sleep at night, and eat low sugar, balanced meals regularly. Take a multi-vitamin daily. Excersize, even when you are tired. That definately will give you more energy. Get out of the house. Especially in the mornings. Staying around the house in the morning always makes me tired. Take walks, go outside as much as possible. Create fun schedules of things to do with your daughter and write them down. If I have a long, unscheduled afternoon in front of me, I always get so so tired. Nap when your daughter does. Don't watch any TV until night time. Don't use energy drinks. They aren't good for you, and you are just loading your body up with sugar and chemicals that will make you more tired in the long run. Good luck!

You have some great advice. I just want to add something... You won't get it all done! We are expected to be a wife, mother, friend, neighbor, nurse, playmate, artist, housekeeper, etc. (you get my point) and there is not enough time in the day. Don't beat yourself up if there's laundry not done or dishes in the sink. Thank God for the opportunity you have to spend with your family. I am only sharing this because I have been struggling with the same issue and a friend gave me that exact advice this weekend and now I am not hating myself because everything isn't done.

Like many have said, get a good physical with bloodwork. Make sure it isn't iron deficency or thyroid before taking OTCs, including energy drinks. I myself am/was a 6 hour sleeper, ready to go, work several jobs, take care of kids & house, etc. Then started having some female problems and went to sleeping 10 hours. Did not work for me. After an out patient surgery for the problem I was much better, but still never quite got back that same energy level. Dolly Parton said in a movie that soon you realize time is marching, and it is marching right across your face. I say it is marching right across your body!! LOL! So get the body checked to make sure.
As far as the house & kids, prioritize. Kids things first, then I get to what I can on the house. Surface things daily, of course, then bigger stuff after work and kids each night. I broke up the big house cleaning that way so that I could keep up with it. It seems to keep it cleaner rather than waiting until I have a day & the energy at the same time. By the time there is a weekend off, the house is really messy the whole weekend is lost cleaning inside. Then there is the outside. Prioritize is the best advice I have. Hiring a maid would be a dream!!!

Hi E.,

Consider going to the doctor to rule out any medical issues first or at least in conjunction with taking better care of yourself with sleep, exercise, nutrition and supplements. Simple bloodwork can either turn up or rule out a number of issues which can cause fatigue including pregnancy, anemia, thyroid issues, diabetes or uncover clues that may point to some serious issues like infection or cancer. The earlier you catch any of these the better.
I hope you find the solution to your energy woes soon.

You may want to have a physical from your doctor and also go to People's Pharmacy. They are so knowledgeable there. Just explain what you're feeling and they can help direct you to the right natural supplement(s). I went in and got on a multi-vitamin and some other things for post-partum depression and it helped a ton! Good luck!

Energy comes from the nutrients in the food you eat.If you are like most of us you don't get the amount you need. Checkout www.melaleuca.com and look up their vitamins and minerals. They are guaranteed take for 90 days and if you don't feel a difference they will give you your money back.

Your energy drain could be several things.

Do you take vitamins - specifically ones geared towards women? If not you might want to consider starting a vitamin habit. Forget about the Centrums and 1-A-Day - these are full of fillers and do absolutely nothing for you. Go to GNC or a similar type place and purchase a viatmin that absorbs into your body.

If you are on vitamins - it could be a matter of you being anemic or perhaps depressed. Either way you should think about scheduling an appointment with your GP or OBGYN for a check up.

Hi E.,

I am a working mother with 5 kids. My dh stays home with them while I work, but when I come home I still cook and clean the kitchen, and help with anything else that needs to be done. I had never had energy until I started taking melaleuca vitamins. They seriously give me so much energy, without the jitters that come along with the energy drinks or pills. They are whole food vitamins. I would not suggest taking the energy supplements. Vitamins actually give you energy, but you have to take the vitamins that are from food, not the chemical ones like centrum or generic. Those are not digested by our bodies. I recommend melaleuca. Let me know if you are interested in trying them. They can only be purchased from melaleuca, not from any store. God bless!

Could you be pregnant? I am pregs with number two and I have a two year old and my first trimester I was just a zombie. Seriously, NO energy! Now in my third my energy is at an all time low. So I would just advise if there is any chance you could be prego to rule that out before taking anything to boost your energy. Having said that, toddlers are just so busy!! Are you able to rest or nap when your little one does? I find that taking an hour or so off my feet is a life saver. Hang in there, you are definitely not alone!

Make sure you are taking a good multivitamin. I take SuperMom from Beeyoutiful.com.
Also, consider taking a B-complex supplement as well, especially if you are on birth control. This helps with energy levels wonderfully.

Hi E.,

I'm a SAHM as well and my daughter is about to turn 3 next month. She keeps me busy too! Keeping her entertained, and trying to get things done around the house; cleaning, cooking breaksfast, lunch and dinner, then cleaning up again after each just drained me. Everyday I put her down for a nap I would fall asleep too. lol. I read the other responses. I was taking a multivitamin from the grocery store for 4 years and I don't recommend them. Apparently it wasn't helping me out. My doctor suggested to eat healthier, exercise, and get 8 hours of sleep. I was doing all of that. So I started looking into more natural things because I know that's safer way for my family. I now shop online at a health and wellness company. I have been taking these multivitamins since Feb this year. I not only have more energy,(no more naps) but my female problem has improved. And this was a problem I have been struggling with for 8 years!! I'm not trying to sell you anything, but I can help you create a healthier environment which will help you with your energy as well. Let me know if your interested!

Hi E.
I would not recommend any of the energy drinks. They have a very high sugar content and give you a trememdous drop when the sugar high goes away. I would most hardely recommend a really good supplement= nothing that is chemically manufactured but you can find one that is chemical free and gives you the most body absorption for true stamina. I can recommend the ones I have been taking for 5 years if you pm me. I just cannot recommend them at this site.
good luck and blessings

Could you be pregnant? That could be giving you that rundown no energy feeling.

I don't know that i'd recommend an energy supplement without first talking to your doctor.

I'll admit, I drink 1-2 cups of coffee most days (I don't drink more than that because I'm nursing) and I notice a difference if I don't. I'm still waking 2 or 3 times a night to nurse the baby, though, and really don't get a full night's sleep.

Perhaps you need to go to bed a little earlier and try to get your 8 hours. Your day is so filled with energetic activities (just being the mom of a 2 year old!) that you probably need more sleep. Add to that that none of us are getting any younger... ;) It's a good idea to just try and get more sleep.

I echo Sara L's recommendations. You have to be doing the basics before you start messing around with supplements, etc. No supplement is going to make up for giving your body the care it needs. That means getting enough sleep, eating healthfully, and getting exercise. I find it quite difficult to do this with my 2 year old. It's also good to let go of things that may seem important but aren't critical (e.g., a spotless house, laundry done immediately, toys cleaned up all the time, making dinner every night). Getting enough sleep is more important than making the bed. You've got to focus your time and what little energy you have on the important stuff and learn to let go of the rest. If you are already doing these things, definitely see a doctor. Lastly, anybody that looks like they have it all together doesn't. We know how you feel. Hang in there!

Hi E.,

I really can relate to you! Consider adding an extra hour of sleep...also, I have found that even a brisk walk can add energy. Stay well hydrated...and I will admit that I do drink coffee...one in the AM to get going and one around 3PM...(my MD tells me that it's OK)..helps a LOT. Finally, have you considered having your eyes checked? If your vision has changed even slightly, it will make you feel exhausted!

Take care,
D.

I know how you feel. I never drank caffeine and lately have taken up to drinking a cup every other morning so as not to get addicted and have withdrawals when I stop. However, I don't think energy drinks are really good for your heart. Anything that gives you a sudden rush isn't good. Try healthy smoothies or drinks made from fruits that will give you good energy. You can look up recipes online.
