Embarrassing Issue

Hi All,

I've seen this multiple times on t.v.. However, I didn't realize it was going to impact my own life so personally. Since, I was little, I always used to leak urine after sneazing, coughing or running. After my first child was born, this got much worse. Now, after my second, I almost can't go anyware without having to run to the bathroom because I know I'll be wet if I sneeze or something. At times, if I have a cold and know I'm going to be coughing a lot, I wear maxi pads. It's really a pain. They say to do the Kegel exercizes, but they haven't helped much before. Anyone else dealing with this at such a young age?

What can I do next?

I was the same way when I was little and eventually grew out of it.

Pregnancy ODDLY didn't affect me after I delivered. I was CONVINCED I was going to be a leaky mess. I'm sure as I age, I'll have issues like my grandma did.

You may want to seek help from a doctor.

Besides surgery, there are other treatments now. There are also pills that can decrease overactive bladder.

Hey L.,

Stop being embarrassed lots of women/men have this dilemma. Thank God for the mini and maxi (toss away pads). You don't even want to hear about what some women in third world countries are going through just because they did not have proper post natal treatment. Count your blessings GIRL! You are NOT alone.

Blessings...

usually when I wait too long to go. but sometimes coming in from the cold is enough to put me over the edge. other times, i find it's mostly when I'm worn out. like this morning, i ran a few miles on the treadmill, then sneezed, and wham! i figured that indeed every last muscle in my body was indeed tired. if i were you, i'd explore the kegals a little further. it's not an immediate fix, and something that needs to be practiced and maintained long term, according to my gyn. good luck!

It's very common. Age has nothing to do with it, but childbirth often worsens it. My physician told me there is a simple surgical procedure that can be done. Recovery is about 2 days. Meantime, there's not much you can do besides wear pads all the time. You can use maxi pads or a slightly better design from Poise or similar companies - sometimes you can buy a store brand at the supermarket or pharmacy that is cheaper. It's easier than running to the bathroom all the time, and this problem doesn't really have anything to do with how full your bladder is. In my experience, Kegels didn't work.

Yes me too! It's so annoying! I had a cold recently with a bad cough and that's when I called my doctor as embarassing as it is. I had asked her before because I was "dribbling" after going to the bathroom. She told me to do the kegels and if that didn't improve then there was a day surgery to correct it. Well I did the kegels (even though I knew that wasn't the problem because I was good to do them after my second child). Ugh sneezing is the worst and I recently been trying to get into shape and was jump roping and oh my. Typically I wear a mini pad for those little dribbles but the jump roping was not good. Anyway I went back to the obgyn doc and because I am trying to get prego again they wouldn't do the proceedure-ugh. We are trying until September only. I am 42. So go see your obgyn unless you are trying to conceive. I guess it's common problem. After September if I am not prego I am making a beeline-lol!

Sounds like Urinary Incontinence to me. My husband is a pharma rep and one of his drugs in Enablex- which may have been the commercial you've seen. Make an appointment with a Urologist and they should be able to help you. I've never used Enablex myself, but as far as I know its very helpful.

Hi L.,
sounds like you have stress induced urinary incontinence. I would talk with your obgyn about this and there are lots of treatments for this problem. Very common for women of all ages--especially after childbirth. Good luck and don't be embarrassed! Talk with your doctor-they can help you!

Try looking up excerise for urniary incontience, it is slightly different than Kegel exercise. Also, when you are peeing stop and hold it, stop and hold, stop and hold, it helps build the muscles. Aviod caffeine also. I would talk to your doctor. The exercises have helped me greatly.

You should ask your OB/GYN or your primary care physician to refer you to a Urologist. A Urologist can help rehabilitate you with proper exercises and, if needed, medication. There could be more issues going on than you realize and a Urologist is the doctor that you want to see for this.
