I am wondering if anyone knows about the egg donation process. My name is P. and my husband is Jeremy. We have been trying to get prengant through IVF, because my tubes have been cut and tied. But we were told my eggs are not good due to my age. I'm an 46 and my husband is 37. Do the blood types need to match? What do you look for in an egg donor?

What can I do next?

I was an egg donor twice. They chose me to match the mother's genetype more or less, because I am of Jewish heritage and blonde. But moreso, they wanted to meet to make sure the ephemeral elements lined up. We talked about poetry, travel and dance, as well as intelligence and world view. Of course these things may not matter in terms of DNA, but it is a nice notion to feel the donor shares your general outlook on life. I was happy as well to know that the effort was for a family I could support with my spirit. I have not been in touch with either family, which is a shame. I would love a photo at least. I am a mom now, late in life. I gave birth at 42, with my husband 34. It is such a blessing and a saving grace. I feel I would have really regretted not knowing this amazing love. I say, just get started. Interview a few to make a nice match, and feel good about the honest exchange. Feel free to be in touch with me, ____@____.com of luck, H.

There should be clinics near you that have donation options. It can cost $10K or more to use a donor. You don't have to match blood types. You just go through information of women and find someone you think would make good offspring.

Good Luck!!

Hi P.,

Have you and your husband ever considered adopting frozen embryos from another couple? Couples who have gone through IVF and have completed their families sometimes have extra embryos left. Presently the majority of these couples discard the extra embyos or donate them to science. However, there are still plenty out there for adoption. It is definitely cheaper than paying an egg donor since the couples donating their frozen embyos don't get reimbursed. If your husband doesn't mind not having his genetic-makeup in the child, you might want to check out this alternative. I think it's a wonderful option for having a baby since the embryos have already been created .... why not give them a chance at life?

Check out this website if you want to know more.

Either way.... you would want to check out the health history of the egg donor or both male and female donors if you go the embyo route. If you want your children to resemble you, then you would also consider physical attributes of the donors such as.... eye color, hair color, height and nationalities.

Whether you adopt eggs, embryos, or children..... good luck to you in your journey to become a mommy!
