Eeewww! Cockroaches

I am totally grossed out! Tonight I found 2 dead cockroaches. Our home is truly clean, I promise, and I just vacuumed/dusted yesterday. I found the first dead cockroach in a 9X13 pan in my kitchen and the other was dead on the floor by my son's toys. So...I know they were alive not too long ago, because I just vaccuumed and I just used my 9X13 pan a few days ago. I've never delt with cockroaches before. What do I need to know about them...are there probably more hiding in my home somewhere? How can I get rid of all of them? I am totally grossed out and I will get rid of them, but are there health risks associated with them (should I clean all my son's toys since I found a roach by them?) Also...I'm sure there are a lot of chemicals that I could use, but having a baby and dog (plus for mine and my husband's health) I would like to avoid chemicals if at all possible. Thanks!

What can I do next?

My husband is a pest tech. (He is a bug guy) What most people don't know is there is more than one kind of roach. Unless it was a german roach don't worry. Most likely with the weather changing it would most likely be a wood roach. They are larger is size and darker. Where as the german is light brown and likes dark, damp, and tight spaces. No sprays yet...

Tbhey were dead for some reason - and probably not old age. I wouldn't be surprised if your house was treated a some earlier time - and these two happened to come in with groceries or something and then succumbed from what your house was treated with.

I would wash every one of his toys and clean out all the cabinets and wash them as well. I am one of those who absolutely freaks at one single cockroach that will stray in my home. I found that Combat Gold trays work great and you can put them behind furniture and in cabinets as well. Make sure you keep your dogs food in a tightly sealed container at all times. I've only had these nasty things a couple of times. The last time I had one come into the house was because my neighbor had them so bad that she finally started fumigating and they started over my home and I nipped that in the bud really fast. Those nasty things make me just cringe. I hope this helps.

There is truly health risks. These can be brought in from groceries or neibors who just had their houses sprayed. But trust me once in they multiply, You must call an exterminator now.

I am a person who is totally freaked out about cockroaches. Last year around this time I found two on two different days dead in our house. The people who lived here before us were crazy about pesticides, I think. I called an exterminator and he said that often you'll find one or two that are passing by but have not established. He told me to wait and make sure I find more first. I have not seen once since! I'm just telling you this to hopefully ease your mind, I would keep an eye out for them, but you may not be infested (I hope).

Unfortunately, if you found 2, there are likely a lot more around that you haven't seen. I think it's the time of yr it is and not necesarily the cleanlisness of your home. I too found 2 in my home yesterday and keep a very clean home. The only way I've found to deal with them is to have a professional come and spray your home. I usually do it twice a yr. The chemicals they use should be safe for both animals and children. I have a cat and a small child and have never had any issues myself, but I would ask whatever company you choose to use, just to be sure. Good luck!

Thank goodness they were dead, but you're right that means they were alive not too long ago. Your son's toys should be okay. They usually pose a health rick when they are severe & there are nests of them. Or I would be concerned if you started seeing more & more of them. I brought one into our house one time from a cardboard box. I know that's what it had to be from because I had never seen one before then & once we killed that one I never saw one again! I bought the bait traps from WalMart & put them strategically around where the kids/ animals wouldn't get them. & I sprayed my house once a week for a month. (I use my own sprayer & buy sprectracide at WalMart or the hardware stores, so I always have it around) If you can afford an exterminator, they are the best & safest way to go. Good luck!

we moved into a 150 yr old farmhouse a few years ago and had a roach problem. i got a product called "Roach Proof". there are other products with different names but the ingredients should say 100% boric acid powder. put it in your utility rooms, behind appliances, in the garage corners. it kills all bugs. they walk thru it and take it back to their nest to eat. we have not seen any bugs for years. if i do see one i just refresh the areas i have put the powder in.

Hey A.,
I'm totally with you on cockroaches! I hate them lil boogers! I can tell you from experiance you can be the cleanest person on the planet & still get them. They can come in from next door, or from your purse/pockets when visiting someone else who is infested. They are sneaky lil'boogers! Your best bet, even tho the one you found was dead, CALL AN EXTERMINATOR! I no there are products over the counter but 9 times outta 10 that stuff makes them breed! Besides once you call an exterminator they have to keep comeing back until they are gone!
Good Luck~

For every one that you see, there are at least a thousand you don't.
That having been said ..... don't freak out !
I don't think disinfecting all your son's toys is necessary (unless you just like to work). You have had them awhile, and it has not hurt him yet to play with his toys.
You may want to go through the toy boxes now and then, however, just in case there are any dead ones in the bottom of them and dump those out. We don't want him playing with the funny bugs !
There are a lot of good things on the market as far as bait traps that you can use, or you can call a good exterminator. They are used to using things that won't harm children.

Are you SURE they are cockroaches and not those black water bugs that some people call roaches ? Those are disgusting, but they are not the health issue that cockroaches are. In fact, they are kind of a seasonal thing, and there are different things you do to get rid of them.
Cockroaches are long and sort of flat and have a reddish brown color.

I used a company that is kid safe. They spray and place a substance that the roaches take back to their nest. IT was around $100 for the first visit + a follow up visit the next month. Then they are about $30/ mo after that. If you are interested in the company, feel free to message me :)

I just saw a black bug downstairs. I honestly can't tell the difference b/t cockroaches or "water bugs" which is what my husband says they are. They are all gross!

I agree they are awful! I would say the best bet is to have someone come in and spray. I know it's chemicals, but there are always more that you dont see. Sometime they get in from anew item you bought that comes in a box. The eggs get into the carboard and likely you and extra present. They have spray that are harmless to humans and when I have had to do this before. I had them come in and then I did a deep clean all over the house after.

I know what you're saying! I hate roaches also. It sometimes doesn't matter how clean your house is, they can find things to eat everywhere!

I've been told a roach can live off a fingerprint for a week. Also can live without their heads for a while too.

We have gotten ourselves an exterminator due to our brown spider problem. Our spider problem went from moderately bad to non-existent. I'd recommend our bug guy and the company to anyone. I didn't check out where you live, but if you live in the Wichita area, call Patton & Keehn at ###-###-####. Our guy's name is Van. You can ask for him, he will treat you right.

Don't be scared of the chemicals the pros use. We haven't had any problems, just the satisfaction of NO BUGS!!

Regarding your son's toys... there shouldn't be any problem. If it makes you feel better, do ahead and clean them.

You better do something quickly about this... they spread fast. If you've seen one, there are many more!

Good luck! You could try to get rid of them yourself, but it will take longer! They are pretty hard to get rid of without professional help.

Hope this helped! ls
