Hello mamas. Just wanting to get pros and cons of tubes...my son has had a TON of ear infections since birth and we took him back to dr last week,he saw a diff dr than his usual one and she reccomend me talking to his reg dr about it so I just want to hear some of your opinions about getting them before I go see his dr.
My daughter had 13 ear infections from the time she was 3 months old until she was 18 months. We finally gave in and did the tube thing. I truly can't believe the difference it has made. She had them on 12/19 and has not had an ear infection since. She's been happier and even the common cold has become extinct for her. I would recommend them highly! Good luck!

Hi E.,
It never ceases to amaze me that Dr.s today do not explain these things! I am attaching a link to Mayo clinic for you so you can read about the tubes and why they use them. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/ear-tubes/MY00601
A lot of the times the inside of the middle ear is not formed so the fluid can drain out, and this causes the ear infections. Tubes provide the drain.
Children can have hearing loss from multiple ear infections (my nephew does). It is a very simple procedure and it can provide great benefits.
All of my daughters - now in their 20's had tubes when they were small, and my granddaughter who is now 5 went through three sets. We did notice when she was suffering from the ear infections she didn't seem to hear well, and her speech was not as clear as it should have been, but after each set of tubes was put in, she could hear and her speech improved.
Good luck and I hope your little guy gets past all of this and feeling better soon!

My daughter had a ton her first year, and we finally went to an ear, nose and throat doctor who told us that if we didnt get tubes, she would have permanant hearing damage. We got the tubes and havent had any problems since then, which is awesome. The surgery was quick, and she was just a little tired that day and back to normal the next. Ear problems run in my husband's family, but I had never even heard of putting tubes in ears. But when I heard "permanant hearing loss" I decided we should do it. Good luck!

This is a copy of a response I recently wrote to another mama with a similar issue... I hope it helps...
I am a pediatric chiropractor, and I have found in many cases when the infection recurs like in your case, a combination of chiropractic adjustments and/or craniosacral therapy, supplementation with probiotics to counter the effects of the antibiotics, and some minor changes to the child's diet are equally (and sometimes more) effective than tubes. From a financial standpoint, there are costs to this treatment, but probably much less than tubes.
If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.
Yours in health,
Dr. Alyssa

Hey E.,
My son had a TON of chronic ear infection's and they finally did his first set of tubes at 6 months old. He actually had an unusual experience and ended up getting 3 different sets, but they have made a huge difference. He has only had 2 little infections since then and we were able to clear them up with just the ear drops instead of having to put him on antibiotics. The surgery is super simple and very routine and very quick. I would do them again in a heartbeat, they have saved him from so much pain and misery I can't even begin to tell you. He was getting infections like once a month in tell we got the tubes, so yes I would say they are the best way to go if you are having a lot of reoccurring infections.

I only have one word - chiropractor. At least talk to one & try it - you haven't lost anything if you decide it's not for you. Make sure they are a reputible one. Tubes aren't as easy as everyone say & sometimes you have to have them put in more than once as the child grows.

My son too had ear infection after ear infection. We finally decided to put tubes in when he was 8 months old. They've been great! We've only had one ear infection lately but he also had pneumonia at the same time. Best part was it never bothered him. We didn't realize he had it until we saw the drainage. It's defintely been a lifesaver. I've also noticed after the tubes went in, he wasn't as sick & didn't have the runny nose as much.
The procedure is very, very quick. Like 10 minutes. They do put them under & my little guy did great! Sometimes they say they can be a little cranky waking up but not my son. He was back to his old self by the middle of the afternoon!
Hope this helps! If you have any questions please ask!

My son and I both got ear tubes last year.
They are WONDERFUL! He handled it better than I but it wasn't awful for me either. My jaw hurt but my son didn't even need tylenol.
Neither of us have had infections since!

Hi E.. Aren't ear infections awful!? My daughter had 5 in less than 6 months and so we were referred to an ENT at Children's Hospital. I was very nervous about the drugs and the procedure as well, but everything went really well. She was pretty grumpy the day of the procedure, and seemed a bit uncomfortable the next day, but then she was fine. Since then, she's only had one ear infection and it didn't bother her at all. She had a minor temp the day we discovered the drainage, but it was so easy to treat and she didn't have any trouble sleeping.
Since then, no ear infections or even major colds, and our daughter got the tubes in February and is in a group daycare. It's been a wonderful change!
Good luck to you!

E., deffinetley have the tubes put in. As a child, I had constant ear infections from age 4 until 7. Before the tubes i had a 70% hearing loss in both ears. I do have a 30% permanent hearing loss in both ears due to the chronic ear infections. I remember being in horrible pain with every infection. I am so glad I had the tubes. My son who is almost 3 months old will probably be getting tubes put in next month. Good luck and God Bless!!

Hi E., My daughter had tubes put in her ears when she was just a little under 2 years old. It was the best thing we did. We didn't want to do it and kept thinking she would grow out of the ear infections. But it was one infection after another and she was always having to take antibiotics, something else that we didn't like. So finally we put the tubes in and it was like we had a new kid. My little angel has a big personality and is not affraid to let you know how she feels and always seemed to be in a bad mood. Afterward she would be in a good mood. She wasn't as crabby. Our theroy is that she was pretty much always in some amount of pain due to her ears. Now my little one has narrow nasel and ear canals which caused her to get sinus infections and ear infections a lot. So the tubes really made a diffrence. Getting them put in was really easy, she was up and running by the afternoon. We went in early to have them done. We were home by 10:00 am she had something for lunch, had a nap and was good as new. If you are having problems with ear infections I would recommend it. I know that a lot of people say they will grow of of them (and they will), but I had an ear infection just about 6 months ago and it was one of the most painful things I had been through. And Tylonal did nothing for the pain. I felt like the worst mother in the world because I let my baby suffer through them for as long as I did. I think if more parents had ear infections as an adult then more kids would have the tubes put in. Good luck!

hi my name is B.. Both of my kids had tubes. I had good results from both of my children. And one of the best parts is they both stop having ear infection after ear infection. They did not stop all together but they also need their tonsils and atnoids out. Ithinnk it is a good idea. .this will help his ears drain they way they should but doesn't stop all infections. I hope this helps. thanks for your time B.

Hey there! I can totally relate to what you are going through- as i went through the same thing with my daughter. She ear infection after ear infection-we would barely get one cleared up before she had another and had gone through almost every possible antibiotic out there-and we left with getting the Rocephin shots-which are so painful! Finally when my daughter was 15 months old- our Dr. recommended that she get tubes and it was the best decision we ever made. She has not had one single ear infection since. The procedure is outpatient and from the time they took her from us until the time they came and got us in the waiting it was no more than 10 minutes-15 minutes tops. They put them under just a light anesthesia but she was already awake by the time we saw her afterwards- she was a little cranky but that's it!Totally worth every penny if you ask me! It has been the only thing that has kept her ears clear! Hope this helps!
